The Invention is to be given a trial this week by the eight general su perlntendents of the Ilarrlman lines who are holding a semi-annual con ference In this city. J. Shannon, the inventor of the de vice, hag been conducting his expert ments at Graham station, near Mon- tavllla. He says that the trials have met with complete success. The device Is simple and is Intend ed to supplement the work of the semaphore. It consists of a spring of boiler plate placed near the rail within the track. Whenever the semaphore arm Is down, that Is, points to safety and shows the track Is clear, the spring release's Itself and Is at a level with the rail. But as soon as the semaphore arm points to danger tho spring flies up six or eight Inches above the track. A locomotive Is fitted with an Iron shoe suspended beneah the cab and attached to the throttle. This shoe Is forced up as the locomotive passes over the spring and shuts off the throttle, thus bringing the train to a stop. In case the engineer wishes to dis regard the danger signal as, for In stance, In the case of wrecking trains or helper engines he can set the shoe from the cab and It will not act upon the throttle. Railroad records show that 63 per cent of the serious accidents are caus ed by disregarding danger signals. It Is claimed by Shannon that If his device is put Into use the "human equation" is reduced to almost noth Ing. An engineer can die at his post but his train will be brought to Instant stop by the action of the spring and the steel shoe. Michael J. A party of high officials In the reclamation service" Is expected to ar rive here this evening and tomorrow n company with a committee from the Boise Commercial club they will make a trip to the government dam above the" city and also over the lands on the upper bench above the New Tork canal for the purpose of looking into the advisability of Installing pumping plant at the dam and bring. All this land, he says, lies within six and a half miles of this city, and Is among the finest bench land In the state. The state owns several thousand acres In this section which he believes an application would be made to have put on the market If water were ob tainablo.
