The warrant Indebtedness of Union county on July 1, 1902, was $289, 622.38, and the Interest amounted to approximately $1000 per month, says the La Grande Observer. The war rant Indebtedness on July 1, 1908, was $133,449.08, while on July 1, 1908, It had been reduced to $68, 06 1.55, showing a reduction of $65, 387 5 in the last two years, which certainly must be a matter of satis faction to the court and the taxpayers county. Jack rabbits in large numbers are overrunning the Lewiston orchards section, and protection to the young fruit trees has been made necessary, says a Lewiston item. The rabbits are particularly fond of the bark of the young trees, and thefr depreda tions have resulted in a number ot trees being killed. During the past few days men have been engaged in wrapping the trees with tarred paper and steps have been taken to exter minate the rabbits. Carrots containing strychnine have been scattered In the sections where the rabbits range, and hunting parties have found great sport In shooting the rabbits by moonlight. It. & N. have been for some time conferring on the mat ter of the selection of the superin tendent who wilt be in charge of the Lewiston division, which will em brace the two new Joint roads, says the Lewiston Tribune. Comment was to the effect that Trainmaster T. H. Lantree and B. W. Walker, chief clerk to Superintendent Reamer, of the Northern Pacific, were hoing con sidered for the place. Jonathan Johnston of the Canadian Pacific Irrigation scheme at Calgary, Alberta, who has been in the city for several days, left last evening for Walla Walla from where he will go to Calgary with a party of home seekers in a few days. Harry Walther of this city, who Is spending his vacation at Trout Lake, caught a rainbow trout a few days ago which measures 26 inches from head to tail.
