newspaper, booming the country and
publishing optimistic screeds about
big wheat yields, high priced land
and other similar brain productions,
is a pleasant task, should disabuse
their minds of this Idea.
All during the harvest season the
East Oregonian has taken pride In
publishing the boasted wheat yields
of this exceedingly dry season and
has taken especial pleasure In saying
that the wheat crop of Umatilla coun
ty Is almost normal despite the lack
of rain.
All of this has pleased land own
ers, merchants, business and profes
sional men and has had a decidedly
beneficial effect throughout the coun
ty, state and nation as It advertised
Umatilla county as one of the places
where failures are absolutely un
known. But Imagine the surprise which was
brought to this office this morning
by several we! known reservation
renters who have harvested but aver
age crops this year. They said that
the boasting articles in the East Ore
gonian and other Umatilla county pa
pers had had the effect of raising
rent from Jl to $2 per acre on the
land they are farming and they con
sider that the optimistic articles In
question have therefore damaged
them personally by making them pay
