T WOULD M MB FOB BETTER FARM CONDITIONS With a view to bringing about bet-1 ter living on the farm. It Is at least ter social, sanitary and economic con-; as important that the farmer should dltlons on American farms, President j set the largest possible return In Roosevelt has requested four experts money, comfort and social advantages on country life to make an Investiga tion into the whole matter and to re port to him with recommendations for Improvements. The men President Roosevelt has' "This problem of country life Is In asked to act as an investigating com-; the truest sense a national problem. mlttee are: Professor A. L. Bailey of "The farm grows the raw material for the food and clothing of all our citizens; it supports directly almost half of them; and nearly half the children of the United States are born the New York College of Agriculture; Henry Wallace of Wallace's Farmer, Des Moines, Iowa; President Kenyon L. Butterfleld, Massachusetts Agricul tural college; Glfford Pinchot of the ; and brought up on farms, United States forestry service, and Walter II. Page, editor of the World's Work, New York. In a letter to Professor Bailey ask ing him to accept the chairmanship of the committee the president out lines his desires in the direction of Improvement on the farm. The let ter follows: "My Dear Professor Bailey: No nation has ever achieved permanent greatness unless this greatness was based on the well being of the great farmer class the men who live on "How can the life of the farm fam ily be made less solitary, fuller of op portunity, freer from drudgery, more comfortable, harpler and more at tractive? Such a result Is most ear nestly to be desired. How can life on the farm be kept on the highest level and where It is not already on that level be so Improved, dignified and brightened as to awaken and keep alive the pride and loyalty of the farmer boys and girls, of the farmer's wife and of the farmer himself? How can a compelling desire to live on the the soil, for it Is upon their welfare, j farm be aed in the children that material and moral, that the welfare Of the rest of the nation ultimately de pends. "In the United States, disregarding certain sections and taking the nation as a whole, I believe it to be true that -the farmers are better off today than they ever were before. We Ameri cans are making progress in the de velopment of agricultural resources, but It Is equally true tnat the social and economic Institutions of the open country are not keeping pace with the development of the nation as a whole. The farmer as a rule Is better offj than his forbears, but his increase in i well being has not kept pace with ' t that of the country as a whole. "While the condition of the farm ers In some of our best farming re gions leaves little to be desired, we are far from having reached so high a level in all parts of the country. In portions of the south, for example, where the department of agriculture are born on the farm? All these questions are of vital Importance, not only to the farmer, but to the whole nation. "It is especially important that whatever will serve to prepare country children for life on the farm and whatever will brighten home life In the country will make It richer and more attractive for the mothers, wives and daughters of farmers should be ! done promptly, thoroughly and glad j !-. There Is no more Important per j son. measuring influence upon the life ! of the nation, than the farmer's wife, i no more important home than the country home, and it is of national Importance to do the best we can for both. "The farmers have hitherto had less than their full share of public atten tion along the lines of business and social life. There Is too much belief among all our people that the prizes of life lie away from the farm. I am anxious, therefore, to bring until last week, when symptoms of an unusual kind developed. The bear snapped and frothed In the mouth and his howls were like the bark of a dog. The veterinary who had him under observation con cluded that he had rabbles. Death was preceded by paroxyslms of hydro phobia. Just how the rat contracted rab' nles can only be surmised. The belief Is that it was either Inoculated with rabies at some laboratory and escaped or It had been bitten by a mad dog. For Sore Feet. "I have found Bucklen's Arnica Salve to be the proper thltig to use for sore feet, as well as for healing burns, sores, cuts and all manner of abra sions," writes Mr. W. Stone, of East Poland, Maine.
