Now IUch La"d Produces Everything In Abundance Many OiiiiiHrs In the Mountains. The Frcewater Times tells the fol lowing Interesting story of Basket mountain and Its thrifty settler. This It one of the best mountain sections of Umatilla county and has great possibilities. The Times My: No one who has not driven over ths country has any conception of the great amount of territory thnf Is tributary to the town of eastern Or rjron. On Monday we drove round Basket mountain, nnj on reaching the first plateau we gazed around and saw a great stretch of the finest wheat land In the world. Two combines were at work In one field, every few minutes deliver Ins the sewn sacks of golden grain, ready to he sent to the mill. On the higher plateau two headers were l.nxy. and In another, the blnd li.g machine was delivering Its toll to the tackern. Still higher on another plateau, the timothy had been cut and was being haled for the sound mar kets. Everywhere we noted Indus try nnd prosperity. We fouiyl some old friendH on the hills and made new ones. We called on our old friend Sam Warfleld, -whom we knew well six years sgo. when he furnished us with our year's supply of wood. Sam has done well in the last few years. lie sold nin acres of his holdings recent ly to a Russian colony for $15,000. He still has 160 acres of Tine land lift, 100 acres of It Is plow land, 4S of the hundred being In timothy, and P acres In pasture, orchard and gar den. Eleven years ago, when Mr. Wnr., field started, he had only a team of horses, one of which ho bought on credit. The orhnrd contains 330 fine fruit trees. W. A. Kutrh Is another Basket mountain farmer who Is doing well. Ho has 1! acres, of which there are 35 acres of plow land one-half being In timothy and one-half In grain. Mr. Kutch, who came here from Iowa 20 years ngo, Is making n good sue cess of his farming operations. Ha hy a thriving orchard of choice fruit trees and a strawberry patch which helpe's to swell the farm ln come. The farm will easily keep 30 tc 35 head of stock. We made a new friend In T. O. Oould, who Is a thriving farmer on the mountain, who makes, as does Mr. Warfleld, a specialty of timothy raising. This year the crop is short on the mountain, but Mr. Gould ships out 70 tons of timothy on the aver age, which brings fine returns. Mr. Gould raises a flno variety of straw berries and ships out from 100 to 200 crates a season. The mountain school 'was holding Its summer session and such a fine, healthy looking lot of boys and girls would be hard to find nnywhera, Fin roads, a beautiful day, cool breezes, exhilarating air and Jovial company made Monday's drive a very pleasant one. Prosperity ila' In the metropolis was marked by the employment of hundreds of men and women who have been out of work for months, and It Is expected that many more will lie taken back on Monday. The delegafes to the Traveling Men's Prosperity Congress will spend the day at the beach, and the meeting will conclude tonight with a prosperity banquet. Wholesale houses report that busi ness Is now almost normal and that the prospects are good for a heavy fall trade. Thousands of buyers from all over the country are now In the city and are buying almost os lib erally ns ever. Oklahoma City, Okla., Aug. 15. To oppose the sale of Oklahoma's 3,000,000.000 acres of school lands a state convention was called here to day to organize a movement of pro test against the measure indorsed by Governor Haskell and "Alfalfa Bill" Murray, speaker of the Oklahoma house. At a recent mass meeting of school land lessees called by Governor Has kell a bill was agreed upon which provides for the sale of the publig school lands. Under the initiative provision of the state constitution this measure will be voted upon by the people at the general election in No vember. It must receive a majority of all the votes cast at that election. For several weeks the recent state legis lature tried to pass a bill for the school land lessees, called by Gover nor Haskell, and therefore Governor'- Haskell Issued his convention call ad vocating the Initiating of a bill to sell the lands. It Is alleged by the delegates to to day's convention that the Interests of the state and of the school children of the present and future generations will best be protected by the holding of the schols lands. Resolutions were adopted that call for a state-wide or ganization of those In harmony with the view of holding the lands and that pray to the qualified voters of the state to Join In the battle for the se curity of theproperty on which de pends the education of the young. The convention will map out plans t-o defeat the "Murray Initiative bill," by which title the bill to be voted upon b ythe people Is reslgnated. William H. Murray, speaker of the Oklahoma house, aided In drawing the bill, and Is In charge of the necessary preparations for Initiating the meas ure. To initiate this or any other meas ure a petition of 21,000 resident qual ified voters of the state Is necessary, an'I the securing of this petition was completed, a total of something over j 22.0no names being obtained.
