"Known For Its Strength" IVhaf If Means Many people do not know what a bank's capital'means to its depositors, or the differ ance between a bank of little or no capital, and one with a large capital. One of the functions of A Banks Capital is to protect its depositors from possible loss; therefore' the larger it is, the greater protec tion the depositors have. This bank has a Capital of .... 200,000.00 Surplus Fund of . . 50,000.00 Undivided Profits . . 25,000.00 Additional Shareholders Liability . . . . 200,000.00 A TOTAL OF 475 000.00 This means that this bank must lose prac tically half a million dollars before its depo sitors could lose a cent. This protection is for YOU. The First National Bank PENDLETON, OREGON so that the crop Is by no means an unusual one, but a very fair Indi cation of what the country can bo expected to do in that industry when the proper attention Is given It. It Is the early plantings that are suro to mnko the best productions, nnd with a season that would permit of early planting to como up rroperly nnd pet an early stand It would be po?sillo to eclipse the. crop that Is promised this Benson. The good showing that Is being made this year Is already beginning to have an effect on tho next sea son's acreage, ami tho field superin tendent says that the Indications for next year nre brightening already. MANCHESTER'S NEW LAWS. SECURITY PEN OLETO N AS All EDUCATIONAL CENTER Some weeks ago a lady asked the Question: "Why is it that every per son that has ever attended the Pen dleton academy, whether a graduate or not. Is forever after a loyal friend and speaks in the highest terms their praise of the institution?" The an swer, partly given then, Is given here In full. location. Pendleton academy stands In the center, geographically, commercially, , socially and educationally, of one of the richest, if not the richest, counties of the state of Oregon. Umatilla wheat, wool, cattle, hogs, horses, sheep, timber, fruit, honey, alfalfa, butter, cheese, eggs, poultry, etc., In endless variety and unlimited quan tity. From the academy windows can be seen the beautiful Umatilla river, sometimes a rippling brook, clear as crystal, singing its way to the sea, sometimes a raging torrent, swollen to fifty times its normal size by the melting snows In the mountains. One can also see where Wild Horse, Tutuilla. McKay and Birch creeks enter the Umatilla, The Blue mountains can also be seen In all their moods, sometimes covered wltM their white mantle of snow, some times brown or brassy, and again as blue as Indigo. The students can see the great wheat fields that produce over 1 per cent of the wheat of the United States and the same thrill that is produced by the fields of tasseled corn or rust ling cotton is produced by Ihe more modest but more useful waving wheat. Ideals. Pendleton academy stands for the highest Christian Ideals in the de vclopmer.t of character. Not so much "What do you know" as "What are you?" In discipline, honor is the rule and love takes the place of law, The whole faculty believe In and fol- lyrupsr 1 igs D'mr5fSc-nntt acts gentry yet prompt ly on the bvcb, cleanses me system ojjcctu ally, assists one in ovwcommg halntual constipation permononily. School spirit runs high, and it Is not class spirit. There Is a commu nity of Interest that forbids classes or cliques, and every student seems proud of every other student; so when you find the glee club, the de bating team, football team, or any other of the numerous clubs or teams before the footlights, you will find the whole school "behind the scenes." And a student of another Institu tion expressed the, spirit of the school exactly when he said, "Before you lick that team you must lick the whole school." The Halls. Brown hall, for the boys; Koontz hall, for the girls; beautiful build-. ings, conveniently located and hand somely furnished: domestic science and glee club practice for the girls and orchestra for the boys. The touches of home life In amuse ments, entertainments, etc., brought forth from a good authority on this subject not long ago this bit of com mendation, "The mingling of the sexes In Pendleton academy Is the nearest ideal I have ever seen." A student In writing home last win ter said to his mother, "To mingle with such a body of students and come under the direct care of such a faculty and Imbibe the spirit of such an institution is a splendid educa tion Itself." In this answer I have not tried to tell of the course of study, which is second to none of Its class on the coast, neither have I discussed the management or equipment, the form er up to date, the latter Improving, I have simply tried to show that Pendleton academy has something In location Ideals and school life and spirit that makes It a choice place to send the boys and girls, and what ever It may cost Is more than met In the scholarship and character It de velops. BUMPER BEET CROP. William Gough, field superintend ent of the Xampa factory of the Utah Idaho Sugar company, arrived in town last evening from a trip out among the beet raisers, and he gives a glowing account of the prospects for a bumper beet crop for this sea son's factory run, says a special from Xampa to the Boise Capital News. He predicts that the yield will be of greater tonnage than that of 1906, the first year of the factory's run here. The tonnage product that year was splendid, even for the acreage of the year, but this year the acreage is not nearly so great as that year, but the prediction Is now that It will be a larger tonnage, which would mean a much larger acreage ton nage. It Is said, too, that the season was a very unfavorable one to begin with, and many of the plantings had to be done several times to get a stand, Improvement fr House CoiiHtmctlon In Tills British City. Consul Church Howe advises that the new building by-laws which hnve been under consideration by tho Man chester corporation for some two or three years have been adopted by the Improvements committee of that Brit ish city. , The by-laws are a great advance upon those now in operation. In the Judgment of the committee, the new by-laws are an Important nnd much needed step forward. They will se cure to the houses of the future more air space, wider streets, and an ab sence of long, monotonous rows. The main object Is to prevent the spread of slums and promote the health and comfort of the people. In future no new street will be less than 14 yards wide, an increase of 2 yards on the minimum width. Main roads must be 50 feet wide instead of 36 feet, the present minimum. And, as fa as possible, one street will be plan ned so as to fit In with other streets. The long rows of houses, all of one pattern, will not be sanctioned. No block of houses must contain more than 10, nor cover a frontage of more than 100 yards. At the back of each cottage there must be an area of not less than 250 feet, an advance of 100 feet. No blind alleys will be allow. ed in future, and all passages must lead to main streets. The comittee also made provision for staircases in all houses to be fitted with hand rails. These are the main points of the new by-laws. They will not, how ever, affect houses that have already been built, but In future' all plans that come before the committee for sanction will have to conform to the new regulations.. Saved by Scratch. Miss Christina Holt is lying at the home of A. Looff In this city uncon scious and in a critical condition, as the result of exposure, eays the Mil ton Eagle. She was recovering from an attack of typhoid fever, and yesterday at about 11 a. m., during a fit of tempo rary aberration of mind, It Is sup posed, she wandered from home. Be coming alarmed at her absence, mem bers of the household instituted a search, and she was discovered lying In a shallow pool of water near the river, her face all but submerged and life nearly extinct. She was discover ed by Mr. Looff, and carried home and medical aid summoned, but It took two hours of constant effort to resuscitate her before signs of return ing animation could be noticed. She is RtlU In a semi-comatose condition and grave fears are entertained that she will not recover. How long she remained In the wat er Is not known, but as she was miss ing from the house about two hours It Is probable she spent most of the time where she was found. Miss Holt came to Milton from Ger many a few months ago, and has made her home with Mr. Looffs family since. Esperanto in Spain. Consul R. M.
