The national capital is being cleaned up both physically and morally. For the past three weeks the health authorities have been conducting a successful crusade against unclean lunch rooms and hotels. They have Invaded the kitchens of nearly every public eating place In the District of Columbia. Filthy conditions almost unbelleveable were found In many of the so-called first-class restaurants. A number of proprietors have been nrrested and fined, and others have been forced to quit business. All have been ordered to put their kitch ens In rroper condition If they wish to continue serving the public. Clubs and even boarding houses have not been exempt from the operations of the official microbe chasers. But the District house cleaning has rot been confined to food purveyors. An anti-vice crusade I9 now on, said to have been ordered by . President Roosevelt from Oyster Bay. Imme diately adjoining the new municipal buililinp. which was dedicated on the Fourth of July, and almost within a stone's throw of the White House, is Washington's red light district, which since the days of the civil war has re mained practically undisturbed. It has been the scene of nightly orgies that hitherto have seemed beyond the ability or Inclination of the police to control. As a preliminary step In the cam paign against the denizens of "the division." as It Is called. Major Pyl- ! vester. superintendent 'of police, has ordered the streets In that section of the city cleared of loafers. Unless a pedestrian can give a legitimate rea son f"r his presence In the locality after nightfall he Is ordered to move on, or to go to the nearest police sta tion. Hints have been given to the proprietors of illegal resorts that they .will be allowed a reasonable time to move to another part of the city, or get out of town altogether. The district government has for years believed in the policy of segre gation of vice, and in line with this It is probable that a new red lk'ht section will be created in a part of the city further removed from the business and residence district. Coincident with the cleaning out of "the division," a crusade against nllen women living in vice has been started by the Immigration bureau, also under orders from Oyster Bay. Several arrests have already been made of women, who, the authorities cay, came to this country for Im moral purposes. These, and others as tht-y may be discovered, will be deported. 14 7 This woman say that sick women should not fnll to try Lydiu K. riukham's Vegetable Compound as she did. Mrs. A. Gregory, of -2"m Lawrence St., Denver, Coi., writes to Mrs. I'inklinm: "I was practically an invalid for six vears, on account of female troubles. 1 underwent n operation by tin doctor's advice, but in a few months 1 xvas worse than Wfore. Kidney trouble ha tjecome so prevalent that it is not uncom 1 nion for a child to be born afflicted with weak kidnevs. If the child urinates toooften. if the urine scalds the flesh, or if, when the child reachean ge when it should be able to control the passage, it is yet afflicted with bed-wetting, depend upon it, the cause of the diffi culty is kidney trouble, and the first Step should be towards the treatment of these important organs. This unpleasant trouble is due to a diseased condition of the kidneys and bladder and not to a babit as most people suppose. Langdon of Walla Walla, who is largely Interested in wheat raising In Walla Walla valley, arrived at Lewiston last night from Jullaetta, where he has been investigating the famous 'Alaska" and which Is attract ing world wide Interest, says the Lew iston Tribune. Mr. Langdon Is enthusiastic In his praise of the new wheat and when questioned by a representative of the Tribune said: "Mr. H. C. Baker of Walla Walla and myself spent two days looking over the Adams fields of the "Alas ka," and In my opinion a conserva tive estimate of the yield will be double that of the ordinary varieties. "When one first sees a large head of this 'Alaska wheat It seems almost Impossible to believe It Is real wheat. It looks more like a whisk broom, as it la bearded wheat. Sowed under unfavorable conditions and at not to exceed forty pounds to the acre, one of the Adams fields loks like It would yield about 100 bushels to the acre. It was our Intention to purchase a large quantity of the seed for plant Ing lands in the Walla Walla valley, but we are obliged to content our selves with only one bushel each, as that is the limit Mr. Adams has plac ed on sales to each applicant. "I am taking some samples of tht heads and grain for display at Walla Walla to show our valley farmers this latest wonder, and predict a great de mand for seed among them." A scandal has arisen over some one putting in "hock" the magnificent and Jewel-bedecked album presented to Bishop Barlln on the occasion of his consecration as bishop of Xueva Caceres, according to mall advices from the Philippines. Mgr. Barlin was the first Filipino to be raised to the purple under American ecclesiastical Jurisdiction. On the occasion of his consecration a large number of people were asked to contribute toward the cost of an album In which should be inscribed the signatures of all those who desir ed to congratulate him on his eleva tion. The album was gotten up at great cost and Its covers were studded with precious stones. It was presented to Mgr. Barlln, but the book was taken back to Manila under the pretense that there were others who desired to sign their names thereto. It Is said tha the book was left In the care of a prominent Filipino official. Several Spanish and native papers now are demanding that a public ac counting be made of the money col lected and the amount expended for the album and Its real whereabouts. It la charged that the silversmith who prepared the covers of the book and Inlaid them with precious stones ha not yet been paid for hi material and work. Northwest Fair Dates.
