Crop prospects on the whole uru favorable, though some sectons of the stute are doing better than others. Prices that will be realized on shipping stock will be governed by condltons In the eastern states, where the yields are reported to be compar atively light. Apple men who are gathering In formation In regard to crop condi tions in advance of the shlppng sea son state thut late reports give ev idence of high prices for fancy west ern apples again this year. It Is stated that so far as New York and Missouri, which are big factors In the apple market, only show indi cations of an average crop, while that of Ohio, Indana and Illinois Is almost a failure. At Grand Junction, Col., which Is one of the greatest competitors of coast box apples In the west, the falling off in the amount of fruit shipped this year wll, acordlng to a report received from John F. Moore, manager of the Fruit Growers' asso ciation there, amount to 2.000 cars. The Grand Junction district In cludes Frulta. Clifton, Palisades and Grand Junction. The normal ship ment from there Is from 2,600 to 3,000 cars, but It Is stated by Mr. Moore that it will be less than 600 i l 1 V - mis year, uist year 800 cars were shipped from the district. ai yakima. enatchee and other apple growing centers In Washington the crop is stated to be 10 per cent greater than that of 1907. Reports received from Oregon Indicate good crops In some sections and light ones in others. News from Medford con veys tne information that apples there will be but 60 per cent of a crop. The shipment Is expected to ho between 400 and D00 cars, against 200 cars last year. In quality the crop is said to show indications of being fully as good as mat or last year, ir not better. Blight Is a disease that Is practically uiv- known In the Hood river district. It Is said that August Is the hard est month on eastern apple crops and that reports of a shortago thero now indicate that It will be still greater. It Is also stated that all apple-growing sections on tho coast will this year devote more attention to packing nnd grading, and that the finest shipments of apples ever sent out of the northwest will undoubted ly be sent to eastern markets this year. Leading men of Ireland and England Joined today In celebrating the semi-centennial of the completion of the first Atlantic cable In 1858, the laying of which was commenced on August 6 of the previous year. The work was commenced' at this point, although the original promoters were Ameri cans, Including Peter Cooper, Prof. S. F. B. Morse, Cyrus Field and others. The vessels employed to lay the cable 'were the Niagara and Susque hanna of the United States navy and the British vessels, Leopard and Ag amemnon. After sailing a few miles the cable snapped. This was soon re paired, but on August 11, after 300 miles o ftho wire had been laid out. It snapped again, and the vessels re turned to Plymouth.. . In Juno of the following year a second attempt fail ed through a violent storm. The third voyage was successful. Junc tion of the continents was completed by 2060 miles of wire from Ireland to Newfoundland,' August 6, 1858. Kentucky farmers will gather here by hun dreds tomorrow, and will organize a state farmers' union. The sessions will be held behind closed doors. It Is proposed by the union to exercise the same control over the acreage and sale of other agricultural pro ducts as Is already in operation among the tobacco growers. Leaders in the movement, however, deny any sympathy with the "night rider" and dynamite methods adopted by some of the tobacco planters, and will seek to accomplish their alms by peace ful methods. Traveling Men Organize. Milwaukee, Wis., Aug. . 6. Travel ing men from all over the land are swarming Into the Cream City to day, attracted by a call for a conven tion to organize a National Associa tion of Traveling Men. The Amel ioration of wrongs suffered by "drum mers" at the hands of hotel men, rail road officials and others, Is to be the object of the new body.
