Whether It was opened with prayer or a corkscrew I know not. bet the mere chronicler of things that were attend to the details, while I herald abroad the glad tidings of that which Is to be. In the first place, then, Mr. Taft is to be elected. I have this straight from Mr. Hitchcock. In the past, It has always cost Wall street a great deal of money to conduct campaigns. In this connection .let not the pot call the kettle black. Wall street has never backed favorites, but has always played them across the boards. Nor were the campaign man agers to blame. The hand that gave was Wall Street's, but the money belonged to others. So, of course, it came to pass that during a national campaign there were "hard times" for the poor and middle classes. (How gllbely we Americans write of clusses, which do not exist). Somebody had to pay the millions that were used In manufacturing po litical thunder. I shrewdly suspect dear reader, that you were among the ass-sessed. Now. praises be, all is changed. The saffron canine has been sent to the public pond. The common citizen will be depended upon to cough up the campaign .expenses by direct contri bution, and not through Wall street, So la Wall street deprived of any excuse for inflicting "hard times" up on a defenseless country. The money changers are scourged from the tem ple, peace, plentltude and prosperity abound In the land and the govern ment at Washington still lives. It Is a brave experiment .and all must wish It well. My only sorrow Is for the campaign managers. Their strong boxes are not yet bulging with the thank offerings of the multitude. Honest confession ,lt Is said, Is good for the soul. Craving harp and crown the average citizen will probably ad mit that he Is willing to shout for his candidate and to vote for him, but that to contribute when the plate Is passed around Is another matter. For the average citizen, unlike Wall street, has only his own money to offer. Depending upon the multitude for food and sustenance, the G. O. P. ele phant and the democratic donkey are like to go hungry. Shut out from the Wall street manger, which, In the sleek ,fat days of yore, was stuffed with provender by the swart hand of dollar-marked capital, the patient beasts are now turned out to face a cold and uncharitable world. Let us, at least, give them our sympathy. They are not likely to get much else. A Surprise Coming. A horse was stanilins along Chestnut street the other day nncliored by an Iron weight. A discriminating glance at this en try will disclose the fact that she washed about everything In the bouse. How the bead of the family escaped the wash rag Is not stated. Perhaps there was no bead. "I would place Morrow county's wheat crop nt 900,000 bushels this season," said a prominent wheat buyer to a Gazette representative this week when asked for an estimate. The buyer above referred to Is a heavy dealer In cereals and naturally has been keeping close tab on condi tions In all f the wheat growing dis tricts of this county. The market starts off In good shape. Already buyers are In the field and offering 70 cents per bushel for club with a premium of 2 cents for 40-fold and 4 cents for bluestem are being freely made. This Is the first year that Morrrw county farmers have given 40-fold wheat a thorough trial. This new variety has been sown heretofore only In small lots, owing to the fact that seed was hard to get; however, the results were very satisfactory. While this season has been very dry and Is an off year, the results with a good sized acreage of 40-fold are met with mueh favor and this variety will no doubt take the lead In the future. The advantages claimed are that 40-fold Is earlier to mature, com mands a better price than club, being a good . milling wheat, and yields heavier than any other variety. The main objection to 40-fold Is the fact that It shatters more than other varieties. Harvest Is now well started all over the country. While the yield Is light, there will be many fields with good yields. A new field In Eight Mile will go from 25 to 30 bushels to the acre.
