Passenger Agent ., PORTLAND, ORJOOON 111 MIL ' OPEN III 1912 G'RKAT CULERRA CCT MORE THAN HALF FINISHED, American Working Rapidly and Will Complete lUg Ditch Well In Hldo Time Limit Cut Is PrlncliMil Barrlor 1hti It Is Finished All Is Finished, Washington, July 30. In the dig' glng of the Panama canal It has al ways been considered that, outside the construction of the big lock and dam works, the chief difficulty to be encountered is the great cut through the backbone of the American con tinent at Culebra. The problem was there presented of removing a moun tain, and by the aid of modern steam shovels, drills and dynamite the so lution Is being rapidly worked out In fact, according to Information which has reached the offices of the Isthmian canal commission here, over one-half of tho work has now been completed. This cut through the hills and mountains extends a distance of nine and one-half miles. At the highest point the original surface of the ground was 200 feet, and a hole from 430 to 1,000 feet wide and 160 feet deep 1h being dug there. The work involved the excavation of 80,698,248 ruble yards of earth and stone. The old French company took out 12, 600,000 cubic yards between 1861 and 1889; the new French company took out 10,000,000 cubic yards from 1895 to 1904, and since the Americans have taken charge of the work they have excavated 18.445,426 cubic yards. This leaves only 89,652,822 cubic yards yet to be removed, less than half of the total. In view of the fact that 11.191.488 yards were taken out last year after the Americans had got their machin ery In operation and their organiza tion perfected, the Indications are that nt the same rate of progress the Cu lebra cut will be completed In three years and a half. In the opinion of the engineers here that will fix the date for the completion of the entire canal In other words, they think that the work on the other sections will be so timed as to be finished at the mo ment when the excavation Is done. If they are correct In this, the Pana ma canal should be open for business In January, 1912. Restaurant Stories. "I don't care for the vulgar type of restaurant story," said a New York ho tel keeper. "I refer to that type where the guest shouts angrily to the waiter: " 'Ugh, this steak Is not fresh! What a horrible smell! Here, waiter, Judge for yourself!' "But, shaking his head, the waiter points to the next tablo and answers grimly: " 'Beg pardon, sir. you're qirlte wrong. It's the other gentleman's Ash.' "Or the story of the man who com plained alrout his plnuked shad, wind ing up: " 'I hope you don't think me unrea sonable, waiter? "'No, no, sir, the waiter answered. 'You're the sixth person what has com1 plained about that portion of shad.' "On a somewhat higher plane are the meat stories. Thus a strange guest says: " 'Surely this isn't a barber shop as well us a restaurant? I see a lot of razors lying about' " 'Oh, uo, sir!' says the waiter. Those are for the steak customers. Did you say steak, sir?' " Youthful Logic Mrs. L., a young and Inexperienced Sunday school teacher, was nt times sorely perplexed how to answer the questions put to her by some of her unusually bright pupils. One day just after she hud finished telling the chil dren the story that Adam was the first man God created quiet reigned In the class room for several minutes. Sud denly up jumped little Itosle and in a piping voice said, "Oh, teacher, you for got to tell us whether God created Adam right away a man or a baby!" Embarrassed Mrs. L. looked up to the celling and then to the children for an Inspiration. Happily she quickly spied Betty's little hand raised above the others eager to answer the question. "Teacher, I am surprised my sister Rosle should ask such a foolish ques tion. Why. God must have created Adam right away a big mon, because If God had created him a baby be would have had to have a mother to toke core of him." Curious Book Titlea. Curious book titles ore always being rediscovered, mostly from that prolific period the commonwealth, when sanc- tlmony was supreme. Thus: "John Dances ' Better Than Peter; Teter Dances Better Than John; Both Dance Well" (a rlclous attack on tho Jesuits, In five volumes). "A Sigh For tho Sinners of Zlon, Coming From a Hole In tho Wall, by an Earthen Ves sel, Known Among Men as Samuel Fisher" (was this how taverns came to take the sign of the "bole In the wallT")-London Scraps. Unrequited Gsnlus. The world has never learned the name of the genius who conceived the Idea of spreading butter upon ' his bread, t combination of food elements more palatable, more wholesome and more universally popular than any that the combined wisdom of all the professors who have ever lived has been able to devise. Epicure. FOUND HICIA INDISPENSABLE For Her Children-Little Girls Suf fered with Itching Eczema Which Simply Covered Back of Heads Baby Had a Tender Skin, Too. ALL PROMPTLY CURED BY "WONDERFUL OINTMENT" "Some years ago my three little girls bad a very bad form of eczema. Itch ing eruptions formed on the backs of their beads which were simply covered. Before I heard of Cuti cura, I used to try almost everything, but they failed. Then my mother recommended tho Cuticura Remedies. I washed my children's heads with Cuti cura Soap and then applied the wonder ful ointment, Cuticura. I did this four or five times and 1 can say that they have been entirely cured. I have another baby who is so plump that the folds of skin on his neck were broken and even bled. I used Cuticura Soap and Cuti cura Ointment and the next morning the trouble had disappeared. I am using the Cuticura Remedies yet when ever any of my family have any sores. I can never recommend Cuticura suffi ciently; it is indispensable in every home. I cannot find its equal. Mme, Napoleon Duoeppe,41 DuluthSt., Montreal, Que., May 21, 1907." PAINFUL ULCER On Foot for a Year. Healed by Two Sets of Cuticura "I had an ulcer on my foot for a year or more and it was very painful as it was a running sore. I had a doctor, but his treatment did not heal it. About eight months ago I commenced to use Cuticura Soap. Cuticura Ointment, and Cuticura Pills. I used two sets and it is now all healed up. Mrs. E. F. Rvder. West Brewster, Mass., April 29, 1907. A sensational turn was given the famous Blllek case today when It was learned that Coroner Dupage of this county had secretly exhumed the body of Henry Xieman, the late father-in-law of Mrs. Emma Vrzall Nleman, one of the three survivors of the Vrzal family, six members of which Blllek Is ac cused of having killed. The stomach of the dead man was turned over to two chemists, who are looking for traces of poison. Blllek Is still In prison, sentenced to death,, but at the last minute Judge Landls decided he was entitled to appeal to the United States supreme court.
