A number of the prominent Butter creek stockmen and farmers are making arrangements to bore for artesian water. It looks aa though It couU be easily secured as there are flowing wells on all sides. It is the intention to form a stock company, and then bore about 2000 feet if necessary, and if a flow of water is secured many wells will be drilled. Beeson Brothers big tent which was here during all last week gave excel lent satisfaction. Ben Atkinson has returned from a trip to Buhl, Idaho, where he pur chased 40 acres of fine land. A lanre force of men, 60 or more, are. now at work with a large number of teams cementing the 3000 feet of ditch on the Umatilla project below Echo, where there has been consld- erable trouble from seepage. It will keep them busy for several weeks to come. Large Funeral. The funeral of Miss Elza Kennlson, the young lady who was so cruelly murdered by Grover Stoeffle Thurs day, was held Saturday from the M E. church. The church was crowd ed, and it was one of the saddest fun erals fn the history of the town, as the young lady and the family were held In the highest esteem m tne com munity. Toll Gate ami Other Favorite Spots Visited By Many From Walla Walla Also Pastor Returns From Chau tauqua Meeting' Fruits Being Ship ped From Here Dally. Milton, July 27. Many of the peo ple In this section of the county 'are spending a few weeks In the Blue mountains, some are at the Toll Gate and different places, and a number of campers from Walla Walla have been passing through on their way to the Toll Gate, which Is an Ideal camping place. There are also many camps at the Blue mountain sawmill and on back to Sallng's and Fletcher's old mill site. Nearly everybody that can get away Is going somewhere In the mountains. At the Christian church last even ing the Toung People's society occu pied the evening hour with a literary and musical program, which was very interesting and there was a large at tendance. There were a number of visitors here yesterday from Walla Walla, all coming over on the lnterurban to get away from the city for the day. A number from this section of the coun ty were also attracted to Mead,or park yesterday, which was crowded with people from Walla Walla, Milton and Freewater. A great many raspberries, black berries and peaches have been ship ped out of late, and they are bringing the growers fairly good prices this season. The prune and apple crop B"J quite t.eavy this year. Dr. B. J. Hoadley. pastor of the M. E. church at this place, has returned from Gladstone park, where he had been In the capacity of Instructor in J English and American literature at Gladstone Chautauqua assembly, which was a very successful affair In every way. Sella Hardware Business to Walla Walla Party. Freewater, July 27. Freewater will celebrate peach day again this season, and a meeting of the Free- water Commercial club has been called for Tuesday evening to set a date, and make arrangements for the occasion. Peaches are coming In now, and It Is thought that the cel ebration will not be far off. This event last year proved very success ful Albert Patterson, a young boy. while playing with a loaded revolver Friday, had the end of this thumb badly lacerated through the discharge of the revolver, which he did not know was loaded. A. J. Blcknell has disposed of his hardware business at this place to A. F. Kendall of Walla Walla, who will take Immediate charge of the business. It Can't Be Beat. Avalon, Catallna, July 27. Bellev Ing It to be his last will and testa ment, Andrew Nelson, aged 70, who was rescued Saturday night from a row boat at San Clemente, wrote in lead pencil upon an old envelope the following: "I hereby accuse Captain Iveson of the schooner Lou of San Diego of having cut me with a knife." When the exhausted and bleadlng man reached Avalon at 1:30 this morning it was found necessary to use over a hundred stitches to bind the muscles and flesh together. The gashes across the man's thighs meas ured six Inches and were cut to the bone. Nelson was seven hours in reaching Avalon and medical aid. Upon an envelope was also writ ten the dying man's last will and testameDt, bequeathing his boat, the Star of San Diego, and all personal effects, to his friend, Howard Snyder of Seattle. It is alleged that a further state' ment was made by Nelson before leav lng here, that his and Captain Ive son's presence at San Clemente during the past three weeks was for the purpose of shooting seals, fishing In cldentally to await the coming of the ship Helen from some Mexican port with fifty contraband Chinese aboard. Recent reports state that the schooner Lou is still at anchor at Han Clemente. The launches Juanlta, Captain Mach tails, and San Toy, Cap tain Mathews, left here for San Cle mente and will reach their destina tions at daybreak.
