"The fia loon Mut Go," la the slogan of the delegates to the ninth annual conven tlon ot the Gideons, a national asso elation of Christian commercial trav uUng men, which was opened In Lou iHvllle this morning with a session of the national executive committee. This afternoon the members gathered for a round table conference, at which the principal subject under discussion la methods and plana for bringing about the ubolltlon of the liquor traffic. A demand will also be made that Bibles be placed in every hotel room. All sections of the country are rep resented at today'a convention, al though the organization la especially strong in the northern and western states. This la the first national con ventlon of the body ever held south f thrt Ohio river. Tomorrow's sessions will be devoted to the reception of reports from offi cers, election of officers for the ensu ing year and the selection of a place for holding the 1909 convention. The present officers are Charles M. Smith, uetroit, president; J. K. Hemphill, .aHnvine, vice-president; Nels Ry- lanacr, Chicago, treasurer; L. C, Smith, Waukesha, Wis., chaplain, and frank A. Garllck, Chicago, secretary. On Sunday many of the traveling men will occupy pulpits In the various churches of Louisville, with a meet mg ror men in the afternoon and union services in the evening. On Monday a majority of the delegates win go on on excursion to Mammoth cave. Official reports to be presented will show that the national organisation of the Gideons now haa a membership or aDout 8000, a gain of about 600 In the last year. It Is announced that the organisa tion will attempt to ral8e a large fund for the purpose of putting into effect Its plan for having a Bible placed In every room of every hotel In the Unit ed States. The public at large will be asked to contribute to this fund for the evangelization of commercial travelers. The Gideons is a purely evangelis tic organization and offers no mone tary benefits to Its members. Re strictions as to membershln reaulre than an applicant be a Christian, a member of eome evangelical church; one whose chief business Is traveling for commercial purposes, and lastly. that he agree to wear the Gideon but ton as a distinguishing mark by which ne may be known by his fellows. Oregon is likely to have a biir dele gation to represent the irrigating in terests of the state. at. the next Na tional Irrigation CongresB, which is to meet at Albcquerque, X. M., Septem ber 19 to October 3. Inclusive, says the Iclvgruni. Judge G. T.
