"Hunting In Africa today Is not what It was In the times of Baker and Spoke," said Frederick C. Selous yesterday at his house In Surrey Selous has been reported as being In correspondence with President Roose vent on the subject of the latter' projected big game hunting expedi tion on the completion of his term, Hays a Ijondon ' cable to the Chicago Tribune. Probably no man Is better quail- fled to give advice on the rubjoct than this renowned African hunter. In deed, it is more than likely that had the president made his own plans without seeking the counsel of some body who already had been over the ground of his future cynegetlc ex ploits, he would have caught, at the beginning of his campaign, African fever, whlclj would have placed his life In much more serious danger than the wild beasts. Keloiut a Modcfft Huntsman. Selous, It should be mentioned, does not himself attribute such Im portance to his recommendations, but that does not alter their value. The president proposed to enter the hippopotamus country via Egypt, go ing, no doubt by rail to Khartum, thence by stamboat to the headwaters of the Nile. From this point to the head of the Mombassa railway lies the country where big game most abounds. Selous, replying promptly to the letter from Mr. Roosevelt, pointed out that this plan would plunge the pres ident, who never has been In Africa. Rlggs who lives on the Moore place on Three Mile Is beginning his harvesting says The Dalles Chronicle. He Is binding his grain this year. The crops 4n this district are very fair better than they were last year; al though the straws are shorter, the grain yield will be ' good. From James Taylor, who has a fine field of grain, It Is learned that he Is pleas ed with the outlook for a good harvest. He says the oold weather so late this season is ' responsible for the short straws, but that the grain yield will be good. He was out Sunday looking over some fields of grain and says there have been some . spots burned, but In the main, the conditions are satisfactory. New Movement to Get Better Prices Started in Spokane. Adopt the eastern scheme and sen bananas by the pound Instead of by the dozen, says the Spokane Chron icle. This is the plan that may be put up to every groceryman In the city. At a meeting of the Spokane Gro cers' association, a few. nights ago, the banana market was discussed at length and this plan was favored by a number of those present At pres ent the grocers declare thatjthere is no money made in the banana trade for the reason that the fruit is sold by the dozen. It is said the grocery dealers pur chase bananas from the wholesale houses here by the bunch, the size of the bunch being the only means of deciding the approximate number of bananas purchased. The new plan is said to have been adopted by east ern merchants who have encounter ed the same difficulties that are now before the Spokane merchants, and it Is claimed the scheme is successful.
