INDIAN BEAUTY SHOW. Will CluirnxTS of Oklahoma Tribes Show Their Charms. Muskogee, Okla., July . 21. The "good old summer time" Is being Joyfully welcomed by the redskins of the new state with the customary dances, festivals and merry-making. Among the novel features which will mark the season's festivities among the Indians Is a "beauty show," to be held early next month at the new town' of Bromide. Several hun dred Indian maidens have already entered and the show will doubtless afford a unique opportunity to wit ness the most beautiful charmers of of Oklahoma tribes. Another feature of the summer in Oklahoma In which Poor Lo takes- especial delight is the green corn dance. This festival, as usual, Is preceded by preliminary husks, at which the Indians drink a concoction brewed from a certain weed, the se cret of the medicine men. This Is supposed to cleanse the system and keen the partakers free from dis ease. No good Indian will eat roastTng ears until after the green corn dance, a custom handed down from father to son for many generations, and still rigidly observed among a large num ber of the fullbloods. For this cere mony, hundreds of braves assemble and the squaws cook large kettles full of corn cut from the cob, put ting in big pieces of beef and pork with it. Each Indian has a bowl, and getting his portion, sits on the ground or anywhere else he can while he eats. A dance will sometimes last three days. There Is a feast each day and a dance the night following. At these dances the trouble occurs. The Indians after their severe medical probation, are in fine fettle. Then bootleggers always manage to get In a lot of "4 0-rod" liquor and the fight ing begins. Deputy marshals watch these stump dances closely, and they usually land several boot-leggers. The more liquor there is the more fighting. If there are old scores In an Indian town they are usually settled at these places because all the Indians attend and when they commence to get drunk they proceed to wipe out their differences. DIFFERENT THEN, it NO ICE AND LESS SHADE IN EARLY DAYS Heat Not Noticed so Much Wlicn ; .Pendleton's Pioneers Had Few of Modern Conveniences as Now Water System Consisted of Driven ..Wells No. Fear of. Microbes, in Those Days. "It was not like this in tire olden 'flays," according to Lot Llvermore, pioneer resident and former post master of Pendleton. "We didn't have any ice in the early days and there wasn't as much shade as now but 1 don't believe we noticed the heat as much as we do at present," said he this morning as he wiped the perspiration from his fore head and smiled at the recollection of the days gone by. ' IH early days according to Mr. Llv ermore, the residents of the city were not dependent upon any municipal water supply for here was a method by which plenty of water could be obtained. ' It consisted in driving a pipe Into the ground 10 or 12 feet and merely pumping the water out. But that was before the days when civilization- put the typhoid microbes in well water and though it could be used In safety then the case is dif ferent now. AGAINST SUNDAY BASEBALL De- SJil em Good Citizenship League maiul Strict Law Enforcement. There were no arrests for Sunday baseball as was programmed by the Salem Good Citizenship league. The day was very warm, and there was a large crowd out to the baseball park says the Salem Journal. The Saturday night meeting at the opera house to discuss the liquor question was adjourned until Friday night of this week at the same place The carnival was at Its height and the drawing qower of the temperance speakers advertised was not sufficient to get the crowd. A number of the invited ministers were present when Hon. H..B. Thlelsen announced the postponement of the meeting. That there will be further efforts to enforce the Sunday laws no one can doubt. There Is a strong ele ment among the Good Citizenship league who favor the strict enforce ment of the Sunday laws on the Ca nadlan plan, which Includes excur slons by rail or water, or any sports whatever on Sunday. Municipal Phones for Astorta. There Is talk of the city establish ing a municipal telephone system, In Astoria, as It Is authorized to do un der amendment to the charter passed by the people at the last election, and at the meeting of the council tonight Mayor Wise will recommend that the council appoint a ommlttee to inves tigate says an Item from that place. Churchmen and others in attend ance at the First Baptist church yes terday were surprised and somewhat taken back when the pastor, Frank I. Whitney, invited" all masculine mem- tiers or me congregation to remove their coats, says the Yakima Repub lic. The pastor's Invitation was com piled with only In a few cases at the morning service, some 'few of the small boys venturing to shed their jackets. But when the pastor himself ap peared In shirt sleeves at the evening service, the good brethren of the church were not slow in following the example set by the pastor. It is likely that the custom will be come a popular one among the churches of the city during the hot weather. Although the invitation to the men to be coojer and more com fortable caused a little stir In the amen corner and caused the girls on the rear seats to giggle a little, the Rev. Mr. Whitney's Idea of comfor table worship undoubtedly will be popular. lot or Cold -Bottle The new yaoum bottle, will contents hot for 24 hours, warm for 48 hours, and oold for 72 hours. . The approach of the apple season at Hood River Is causing growers and shippers to put on their thinking caps and estimates as to size of the crop are already being made says a Hood River item. It Is admitted by all who are familiar with the condition of the half grown fruit that this year's crop Is one of the finest that ever hung on the trees here both as to quantity and quality. Weather conditions in the spring and early part of the summer were most favorable In giving the young fruit a good start and there is no rea son to believe that it will not mature into the greatest and best crop of ap ples that were ever shipped out of the, valley. Estimates as to number of boxes of apples that will be shipped from Hood River this year run all the way from 225,000 to400.000. There figures are the guesses of those who have made a considerable study of the question and while there Is a rather wide var iation between the minimum and max imum figures as to the production It Is accounted for by a difference of opin ion as to what the young orchards which will come Into bearing this year will produce. A safe estimate is thought to be in the neighborhood of 260,000 boxes which will make a shipment of some thing over 400 cars of almost double the quantity of fruit ever placed on the market by Hood River In previous years.
