Gathering Big Cherry Crop.
The gathering of the Cove chery
crop will begin Monday, but packing
U not expected to begin until about
the last of next week, says the La
Grande Star. A very large number of
growers of the Cove have arranged to
have their crop handled by E. Z. Car
bine of Frultdale, and Mr. Carbine
expects to make shipments direct to
Chicago, where the cherries will go
Into the auction sales in that city.
It Is probable that the fruit will be
shipped eastward over the Northern
Pacific railroad, and a conference was
on hand yesterday with the traveling
freight agent of that road for some
concessions that Is expected to put the
shipments through on passenger train
schedule.
The rains have been beneficial to
the cherry crop of Cove and In fact
to all the fruit crops. T'.ie yield of
cherries, It Is now estimated, will ex
ceed by at least 25 per' cent the form
er figures.
A couple of weesk ago the yield
for Cove district was placed at 140
tons. This figure Is now considered
not only conservative, but entirely too
ow. The Cove will produce much
more than half of the entire output
of the valley. One grower in Cove,
George Thomas, will have an output
of 60 tons.
Something About Logan Berries.
J. F. Miller was In the. city this
morning from his ranch three and
one-half mlfes northwest of the city
oh the Hill road, bringing with him
a good load of Logan berries which he
disposed of to the various merchants
about the city,' says the Boise Capital
News.
Some of the largest varieties of this
practically new fruit, attracted con
siderable attention at Dolan's fruit
stand today and led to the measuring
Of several berries. One of the largest
measured a trifle less than one and
cne-half Inch and nearly all measur
ed an inch in length. The berries are
firm and possess a delicate flavor un
like any other variety of fruit.
The Logan berry is a cross between
a blackberry, and a raspberry and is
of a bright red color. Burbank, the
famous horticultural experimenter. Is
the man who started their growth
here, and now they are raised by sev
eral farmers. ' The berries are grown
similar to' grapes, that Is, they are
trailed on an arbor or fence. They
yield heavily and ripen slowly with
the season lasting much longer than

summer gown, will umpire the base
ball game between the feudists of the
stage. There will be another game
between the actors and the theatrical
managers, while George M. Cohan's
Yankee Doodle nine will engage In a
contest with the champions from
Jackvllle. Somo of the gladiators of
the ring will show; off their prowess
and there will be several brief but
exciting wrestling contests between
famous professionals. Also c-sh!
It Is whispered about that some of the
actresses present will wear stunning
and distracting sheath gowns, which
will probably add to the gate receipts.
The occasion of all these doings will
be the annual theatrical field day for
the benefit of the New York Home
for Destitute Crippled Children, a
chnlrlty supported by people of the
stage.
Among those who will be seen on the
diamond In costume are Mabel Hite,
from "The Merry Go Round," Bessie
McCoy and 10 Yama Yama girls from
The Three Twins," Gertrude Hoff
man, Trlxle and Bessie Frlgana, Jos
ephine Cohan, Nora Bayes, Elphye
Snowden, Corlnne, Marian Livingston,
the female wrestler, the Coster Girls
from "The Yankee Prince,' and scores
of. others as well known.
Among the men who will appear in
costume on the grounds will be Mac
lyn Arbuckle, Raymond Hitchcock,
George Evans, George M. Cohan, Sam
Lewis, Tom Ryan, BUlle Reeves, Rice
and Prevost, Collins and Hart, Gilbert
Gregory, Mclntyre and Heath, Harry

Among the athletes who will give

The Chinese , actors are coming
from their theaters In Doyers street
to present the latest Chinese success,
"The Duel," the climax to be a Man
churlan sword battle.
Fred Thompson of Luna park, will
furnish two 'big elephants for the
youngsters to .ride, on around the Polo
grounds.

Planting Trout by Thousands.
Rainbow trout fry to the number
of 15,000 are to be brought to North
Yakima this week from the Spokane
fish hatchery and liberated in the
streams adjacent to this city, says
the Takima Republic. .
Game Warden Thomas Mullen has
been in communication for some time
in an effort to procure a planting of
fish for the streams here and has suc
ceeded not only in procuring the
rainbow trout, but will receive at
the same time some 2000 eastern
brook trout fry and has further as
surances that a lot of fish from the
federal government supplies will be
sent to him here.
A day or two ago 30,000 rainbow
trout fry, an Inch or more in length,
were planted in Lake Kachess and
of course, owlnir to the migratory
character of the fish, the benefit of
this planting will accrue to a large
section of territory.
Jvllled In Fall From Train.
In his dying statement John Jacob-
son, who was crushed under a train
near here last Saturday, swore that
the brakeman kicked him in the
breast as he was climbing down,
knocking him from the top of the
coach, says an Ontario dispatch. The
dead man was a. Scandinavian,,
years of age, weighed about 200
pounds and was a stationary engineer.
He is prominently connected and his
brother arrived here before his death.
His brother-in-law Is a prominent
traveling man of Portland. Jacobson
was killed by being run over by pas
senger train No. 2. on the O. S. L.,
early Saturday morning. Jacobson
and four other men were beating
their way eastward and were riding
on top of the coaches. The flagman
climbed on top of the train and made
them get off.
Wldakey Peddler Arrested.
Frank Bartmess was arrested yes
terday on a warrant from the justice
of the peace court charging the de
fendant with the illegal selling of
liquor, says the La Grande Star. The
basis of the charge Is on information
furnished by the Palmer woman. The
defendant may have a hearing today.
In the meantime there are rumors
that others may be brought up before
the court on similar charges.

Detroit, Mich., July 17. Members
of the Associated Billposters and Dis
tributors of the United States and
Canada, in annual session here, have
agreed to continue the movement. for
the suppression ' of all objectionable
billboard advertising. Hereafter the
"paper" of burlesque shows and simi
lar attractions will be subjected to a
severe censorship and pictures of
stage beauties likely to bring blushes
to the cheeks of passersby, will not
be allowed a place on the billboards.
Melodramas with suggestive titles
have also ,come' under the ban of the
billposters' displeasure.
The association practically controls
all the billboards in the leading cities
and towns of this country and Canada
so that the reform will be widespread.
