Chief Engineer Davis Makes Some
Very Encouraging Remarks Re-
putling Umatilla Projects Says in

Soon Be Paradise.
Hermlston, July IS. The people of
Hermlston are very much pleased
with the result of Secretary Garfield's
recent visit here, and the favorable
report made thereon. Be has given
the settlers every chance to get a
good start in this locality, and every
thing looks most favorable for the
Irrigated section.
Arthur P. Davis, chief engineer of
the United States reclamation service,
speaks in the highest terms of the
Umatilla project Be says: 'The ex
treme fertility of the soli with con'
sequent wonderful production, and the
excellent location from a standpoint
of shipping facilities and pleasant cli
mate, make the Umatilla project, in
my estimation, the best irrigation
scheme in America."
Mr. Davis has just paid a visit to
Herraiston to inspect the completed
Cold Springs dam and reservoir, and
that portion of the government's sys-
tem which is now furnishing water
to the settlera Be further said: "The
lower California project, Tuma, has
perhaps as rich a soil as this valley,
but the climate is not nearly so pleas
ant. The Taklma project might be
compared to the project, but your
conditions here are more favorable,
altitude and early season being in
favor of the Umatilla.
The reclamation service has under
taken a number of irrigation schemes!
throughout the country. Each sys
tem is different, the problems of en
glneering are different, and the con
dltlons of the land and Its products
are different

the Sucompahgre project in Utah, the
Minidoka and Boise projects and the
reclamation service looks upon this
as a peach and grape country of the
very highest excellence, which
found unusual in most projects.
Because of the unusual climatic
conditions this year many of the new
projects all over the west have suf
fered somewhat from winds, as the
light soil Is easily blown when first
oroaen ror cultivation. m many
places tne settlers are having good
success when first opening up their
lands by thoroughly wetting them be
fore clearing the sage brush off and
men sowing rye, aJfaira, wheat or
grass. In this way they are able to
- secure enough of a stand to hold the
soil and then the brush can be gTUT
bed out later. This plan has even
been successful in getting a start
with alfalfa in the Minidoka project,
ana it win likely do well here.
Now that the Umatilla project is
Bearing completion, the big dam hav
ing been finished, it will only be a

hundreds of new people wIIK be lo

GIRL SERIOUSLY INJURED.
Fruit Growers and Farmers Are Very
Busy.
Freewater, July 15. Miss Dot
Campbell, who was so unfortunate as
to fall from a wagon Monday while
coming from a picnic, which was giv
en by the people connected with the
Freewater cannery, has been suffer
ing very seriously since, the wheels of
the wagon having passed over her ab
domen. Doctors who have been In
attendance say that the wounds may
not prove fatal, but she will be very
ill for some days to come.
This is a very busy time about Free
water, many of the growers are busy
In their fruit, and the grain harvest
is now at its height. Every body
seems to be busy.
Milton, July 15. A girl who gave
her name as Florence Grlgsby, 14
years of age, was taken to Walla
Walla yesterday by the constable andl
given to the chief of police, Davis,
of that place, until relatives would
call for her. When found the girl
was in the chaped of Columbia col-1
lege at this place, playing the organ
In a most mournful tone. She wa
unable to tell the officer where she
lived, and efforts are being made to I
find out where she came from.
Harvest Is now going on, in all di
rections. So far there are fairly
good yields, going from 25 to 35 bush
els to the acre, which Is a slight de
crease from last year's harvest. The
quality of wheat is good, and with
the present prices maintained, far
mers will lose nothing on the pres
ent crop.
The weather has been somewhat
cooler the past two days, since the
rain has fallen, which was highly ap-1
predated in this dlsttrict, where It I
had been very hot and dusty for sev-l
eral.
George Cowl of this place and Mr.
and Mrs. W. R. Anderson of Walla
Walla, are among those of a camp
ing party who have gone to the
mountains in the past few days.
The prospects for all late fruits
were never better than they are at I
this time in this vicinity. Raspber
ries and blackberries are coming in
at this time. Many berries will be
shipped, while a good portion of them
will be used at the cannery. The can
nery will use an Immense lot of stuff I
this season.

Pittsburg, Pa., July 15. Pittsburg
will have the greatest, all flredest
Wagnerian festival in its history to

music for the occasion. ,
It Isn't the German composer that
Pittsburg will honor, but the great
Hans Wagner, the sensational short
stop of the Pirates. Hans has always
refused to have streets or babies or
five-cent cigars named for him, but
tomorrow he will have to side-track
his modesty.
