What will be the largest national political con ventlon of the year, In point of num ber of delegates, will begin In this city tomorrow and will nominate na tlonal ticket and adopt a platform on which the foes of the rum demon will stand in this year's campaign. large proportion of the 1512 dele, rates have arrived and the wire-pull in for the presidential nomination has already commenced. State delega tlons nnd the various committees will meet this afternoon to transact pre llmlnary bUHlness. The Intercollegiate Prohibition association will hold ita oratorical contest this evening, when elocutionists from all over the United States will launch oratorical broad sides at the saloon. Cash prizes will be awarded the winners. The convention will be formally called to order at 10 o'clock tomor row morning. Memorial hall will be the scene of the gathering and has been elaborately decorated for the occasion, temperance emblems, scrip ture quotations and antt-saloon mot toes being sandwiched In between flags nnd bunting. The delegates will be seated on the main floor of the hall, with the alternates nnd visitors in the galleries. An extension to the big stage has been made to accommo date about 400 district leaders who will be In attendance. Provisions have been made for about 150 news paper men. Possible Candidates. Among the presidential candidates mentioned are Seaborn Wright of Georgia; Alfred Manlerre, a New York attorney: Dr. W. B. Pelmore, editor of the St. Louis Christian Ad vocate; Fred F. Wheeler," a Los An geles real estate dealer; Dr. J. B. Cranflll, a Baptist minister of Texas who has been prominently Identified with the prohibition movement, and Judge S. A. Artman" of Lebanon, Ind.. who fame Into prominence about a year ago by a legal decision In which he declared that the grant ing of a saloon license is Illegal. Apparently a majority of the lead ers believe that It would be better to nominate for president a man who has become promlent In the anti-saloon work while holding office under one of the old parties. Among these Is Seaborn Wright, a prominent Georgia politician, who, as a member of the Georgia legislature, was large ly responsible for the passage of the prohibition law In that state. Wright has many boomers and will likely have the support of all the southern delegations. National Chairman Charles R. Jones Is confident that the prohibition par ty will poll a larger vote this year than ever before. An exceptionally large campaign fund Is expected and the money is already flowing Into the cof fers of the party In an unprecedented manner. Many millionaires of prom Inence. It Is said, havo contributed to the fund. Campaign literature will be circulated by tons. Will Publish Contributions. Every cent received will be pub llcly accounted for, as the prohibition Ists publish the name of every con. trlbutor. also the amount and the late of the gift In addition no mon ey Is received which Is known to come from the liquor Interests. That Is the rule of the national committee, al though It has had no opportunity to announce the enforcement of the rule ately, because no money has been tendered tho committee by the sa noil men. The prohibition party, Mr. Jones declared, will be a strong force In the coming presidential election. Through the organization of national sue clubs voters were being recruited for the prohibition ticket. Thousands of these clubs, he said, had been or ganized since the first of this year. Prohibition Is now sure of 500,000 otes! By he time of the presidential election Mr. Jones was sure the num ber would be doubled. "Tho prohibition' party," he said, 'has increased 100 per cent In eight years. In the same time the repub licnn party has gained only 7 per cent, while the democratic party hias fallen off 19 per cent. Prohibition ter rltory during the year Just, passed has more than doubled." Chicago, according to Mr. Jones, Is from the prohibition standpoint the worst city In the United States, with New Tork a close second. New York state, however, carries off the palm as the state least amenable to prohi bition influence, while Pennsylvania Is necond In blackslldlng. comfortably furnished. It will have rooms for 20 to 25 girls, and be under the same general control as the men's dormitory. It Is beautifully located on the highest part of the campus, and gives promise of being a most pleasant home. ' The Kloshe Tlllacum club will have a handsome new home by the open ing of the university. Tho founda tion has been completed and carpen ters are preparing to rush the build ing as fast 00 possible. It will ac commodate between 20 and 25 girls. The Zeta Iota Phi sorority is having a new house built on the corner of 13th and High streets, which will have room enough for 20 girls. The Mans call for a very handsome build ing. Itooms for rent seem much more plentiful than usual, probably for the reason that the touch of hard times has made many more people wllllna to rent. These, together with the new girls' houses and the old ones al ready established, will make It com paratively easy for the university to find good homes for the large num ber of girls that will enter In September. I'.ciM.rU of Bureau of Navigation Shows Center of Activity on Great Lakes. Washington, July 14. The fiscal year ended June 30, has been the record year of American shipbuild ing, according to reports to the bu reau of navigation, and the center of the industry is on the Great Lake,. During the year 1506 vessels of 588,627 gross tons were built and numbered In the United States, of which 75 steel steamers of 304,379 gross tons were built on the Great utKes. Tie largest annual output heretofore was In the year 1855 when 2024 vessels of 583,450 tons were built. In that year the Great Lakes built only 263 vessels of 45,4 23 tons. This year steel vessels built num bered 142 of 417.167 gross tons com pared with 360,665 tons built last year. These two are the years of the largest steel construction In the United States. tne tonnage built Is entirely for domestic transportation, no vessels exclusively for foreign trade having been built in the United States. Of the 142 steel vessels, 85 exceed ed 1000 gross tons each, 65 on the Great Lakes, the largest being the illlam M. Mills of 7962 tons and 30 on the seaboard, the largest being the Columbia of 8579 tons, built at San Francisco for trade to Hawaii. Four wooden sailing vessels ex ceeding 1000 tons each were built during the year, the largest being the Edward J. Lawrence of 3350 gross tons. HELP WANTED.
