Miss Mildred Long of Portland, aged 16 years, a niece of Mr. and Mrs. A. JT. Owen of South Thompson street, this city, was drowned while bathing In the Columbia river at Washougal, Saturday evening. Owing to the hot, sultry weather yesterday only a small crowd was out to see the finale .and there was no superabundance of enthusiasm. How ever, Pendleton won and the fans wer satisfied. Portland lout the final game and the series to San Francisco today, 6 to 4. The weath er was sultry and errors were fre quent on each side, but bad throwing by Catcher Madden was the princi pal cause pf Portland's defeat. Troutman the architect, for merly of this city, is preparing plans for a large hotel building at Elma, Wash. The building is to be 90x110, three stories, with a Knights of Pyth ias banquet hall and lodge room on the third story. The building will be completed this season. Conductors Change Rnns. The members of the Pendleton baseball team will leave within a day or two for Baker City where they are to play a series with Baker City upon their "own hook." The Pen dleton, Walla Walla and La Grande teams have been officially disbanded for the season. However, baseball Is still a good drawing card in Baker, where It la cooler, and the team there desires to continue playing. So the men who have been with Pendleton during the league season will now go there for a series of four games or more. All of La Grande's team has sign ed-to play with Wardner and Wallace In the Trl-Clty league. ffi HANDS ECHO WINS. Pendleton's Second Baseball Team Defeated in Close Game. At Echo a ball game was played yesterday beitween jlhe Eicho team and Pendleton's second team with the result of 6 to 4 in favor of the Echo boys. The following was the lineup of the Pendleton team: Drake, catcher; Moore, pitcher; Johnson, first base; Beam, second base;- Leonard, short stop; Vickers, third base; Stout, right field; Park, center field, and Arn splger, left field. LYMAN BUYS OUT GEORGE CAREY New Poprletor Is Portland Restaurant Man pf Experience Will Make Well Known Eatng Hoiimq Popu lar Restaurant Has Been In Pen diet on and In Charge of Tula House Before. B. N. Lyman has purchased the St. George restaurant of George Carey and is now in charge of that popular eating place. The deal for the res taurant was completed last evening and this morning the new proprietor took possession. In every way Mr. Lyman Is well equipped to run a first class restau rant at the St George and it is his Intention to do so. He is a pactlcal grill man. having been in the service of the Hotel Portland and also of the Oregon Grill in Portland. While Charles Holdaway was in charge of the St. George Restaurant he left the management to Mr. Ly man for a time. According to the new manager he will do his utmost to make the St George a popular place. He will greatly Improve the service and will also have a menu each day that will appeal to his patrons. Hereafter he will serve a 25-cent chicken dinner from 12 o'clock until 5 on Sundays and from 5 o'clock un til 8 he will serve a French course dinner for 50 cents. At other times the restaurant will be run on the reg ular check system as at present. Unique Japanese Palm. Proprietor Judd Fish of Hotel Bowman has just been presented with a Japanese palm, a diminutive, freak plant which is attracting much atten tion In the lobby of the hotel. The plant was given Mr. Fish by a local Japanese and although but a small, hardy, horny growth it is said to be 27 years of age. The fronds of each year's growth in falling off when ma ture, form a ring about the cones or body of the plant and the age of the plant may be thus reckoned by the rings so formed. It Is a unique plant and so far as Is known Is the only one of the kind In eastern Oregon. Son Appointed Administrator'. John A. Record has been appoint ed by the county judge as adminis trator of the estate of his father, the late John C. Record. The estate Is valued at 39000. J. B. Perry ap pears as attorney for the estate. Suit Over Summer Fallow. A suit In equity was filed here to day by Gotlieb Miller against Wil liam Connerly. It is a case which grew out of a dispute over some sum mer fallow land. Fined for Profanity. In the police court today Dan Pike was fined $10 by Judge Fits Gerald for having used profane language on the streets. Train Kills Woman. Mrs. Frank Ailing was killed by an Interurban train near Bluff, Wash., Wednesday night, just 10 feet from the King county line. The motorman saw the woman too late to stop the train before it was upon her. The Alllngs, who are well known In Ta coma, were divorced some time ago.
