One hundred thousand dollars has already been levied and collected and Is In the slate treasury for this pur pose, as a result of the Jones bill, full swing until about the 16th or a bill to make the necessary appro priation for this purpose. The Fnlten resolution passed the senate directing a new estimate to be made of the cost of acquiring the locks and canal. Congressman Ellis of eastern Ore gon feels grateful for the kind words said for him In this part of the state and writes: In regard to free locks and canal will nay I am earnestly In favor of any measure that will bring that about at an early day, and will will ingly and cheerfully work hand In hand with Hawley In hehalf of this much needed work. OF W INTER t'JtllAM OFFICERS MAKE IMPORTANT BUSINESS VISIT Reported Tlmt Line Will Soon Be Extended to Weston Weston Nor nuil President Goes to Boston and Other Eastern Points Many Camp ers Found la Mountains Prepar ing for Harvest. Weston, July 10. Some of the of ficers of the interurban line running; between Walla Walla and Milton were in the city this week In connec tion with business concerning the survey of the line, which it is under stood will soon be run to Weston. Among those here were President Buumlester, Vice President Drumhel ler, Secretary Isaacs and Mr. Isaacs, the New York representative. It has not been learned just how soon the'iine will bo run on to this place. President French of the Weston normal, left Wednesday for Boston, Mass., where ho will meet his wife, and they together will visit different points of interest, stopping at New port, R. I., and different places. . The farmers of this section are pre paring for tho big harvest which is expected to begin In earnest next week. A number of new combines will be In use this season. There are a great many camping parties from here out In the moun tains. Everyone that can Is going out since It has been so warm the past few days. It is understood that a great many campers are already coming to the mountains in the vicinity of the toll gate above here. There will be the usual number there during the months of July and August. DAYLIGHT TRAIN TO PORTLAND FOR WALLA WALLA Run Will be Made By Pasco Ow North Bank and Northern Pacific. It Is believed that Walla Walla Is same time a daylight train to Seattle Portland over the Northern Pacific and North Bank roads, as N. P. offi cials of this city are today comparing possible schedules of trains of the two roads, says the Bulletin. At the same time a dayllgh train to Seattle and Spokane will be made possible for Walla Walla residents, and the long delay In Pasco will be practical ly done away with. With the completion of the large bridge of the North Bank across the Willamette river at Portland, trains will be Inaugurated on that road be tween Pasco and Portland. It Is ex. pected that this bridge will be ready for use about the last of this month, and It is probable that by the first of August the daylight train from Walla Walla will be inaugurated. In order to do this, two trains each way between Walla Walla and Pasco will be necessary. A train that would make the daylight ride to Portland possible, would have to be run out of Walla Walla In the morning, leaving here in time to reach Pasco py 11 o'clock. But If this train could be run out of Walla Walla In time to reach Pasco at 9:25 in the morning, connection could be made with trains for Seattle and Spokane, as well as the train on the North Bank for Portland. This would bo a great Improvement In the railroad service of Walla Wal la, and it Is possible that the Com mercial club will take up the prop osition and make strong recommen dations to the Northern Pacific com pany. One prominent business mnn said today that he could see no rea? son for not discontinuing the night train out of Walla Walla If necessary In order to secure the day train.
