Word h been received from Sal mon river in the northern part of the county, of an exciting battle with a cougar, In which a plucky woman, Mr. P. Gladwon, carried off the hon ors, says the Grant Count Newe. In the fight, hlch lasted a half hour. City Engineer Morris Wygant and a United States inspector bore a part. The cougar entered the yard of Mrs. Glodwon while she was hanging up clothes. She did not observe the beast till It was within 25 feet of her, She then turned and saw it ready to spring. She screamed and as the brute leaped toward her threw an armful of clothes over Us head. Her cries and the snarls of the beast Initantly attracted the attention of Mr.'Wyfant and several others. who were In the house, and they en tered ine arena uucucu uy several dogs. For 20 minutes It was nip and tuck between te dogs, the enraged cougar and the men. Finally, after ; tearing the clothes to pieces and In- ' . 1 - . ,1. V- . Old Sol will go Into partial eclipse tomorrow morn ing and for over three hours will hide Ills face from tho peoplo of a consid erable portion of the United States. The area In which the eclipse may be observed covers the North American continent south of latltudo 60, as well as South America north of the equa tor and large portions of the Atlantic nnd Pacific oceans, southwestern Europe and west Africa. As the moon Is now at almost Us greatest distance from the earth, It will not, when ap parently directly In front of tho Bun, quite conceal It. The area where such a riictrn observation may ho made ami where the eclipse Is most nearly total Is about 200 miles wide ami ex tends across Mexico, the gulf and Florida. Tho first contact of the eclipse, as viewed in Washington, will begin at 9:27 tomorrow morning, reaching Its greatest degree of obscuration at 11:22 nnd ending at 12:59 o'clock. At itu height, shortly after 11 o'clock, about three-fourths of the sun's rays will be cut off and tho greater part of the United States will pass Into semi-obscurity. As observed In Washington, the moon will appear to pass before the southern part of the sun, beginning at thu. right edge and gradually cover ing all the lower part of the disc. At Its height the eclipse will transform the sun Into a crescent of a width about a third the diameter of the sun. At this time, the shape of the sun can readily be perceived by gazing at It through smoked glass. Little significance Is attached to a partial eclipse of the sun by astrono mers, as all possible observations un der such conditions have already been made. Only a total eclipse now has a scientific Interest, since It af fords opportunities for studying the sun's surroundings not possible at nny other time. Tomorrow's eclipse will begin at 6:12 in San Francisco, at 7:21 In Denver at 8:03 In New Orleans, nt 8:11 In Chicago, at 8:38 In Tampa, at 9:38 In New Tork, at 10:08 In Bos ton and at corresponding differences of time In Intermediate cities. A Grand Family Medicine. "It gives me pleasure to speak a good word for Electric Bitters," writes Mr. Frank Conlan of No. 438 Hous ton street. New Tork. 'It's a grand family medicine for dyspepsia and liver complications; while for lame bnck and weak kidneys It cannot be recommended too highly."
