THORNTON .MUSIC CO lit Main Street HIGH GRADE PIANOS and ORGANS Columbia, Edison and Victor Talk Ing Machines, Reoorda, Cabinets and Musical Merchandise ow mil The Oregon Dally Journal publish es the following striking editorial on the "Industrial Tragedy of Central Oregon": Up in central Oregon south of Shanlko an Industrial tragedy has been going on for years, but reaching large proportions only laot year. In a portion of Crook county averaging perhaps 60 miles distant' from Shan Ik o, it Ih Huld 1,500,000 bushels of wheat were rained last year and prob ably more will be raised this year. Thoso people went In there expect ing a railroad would be built. They had tho promise of Mr. Harritnan, and of others. They plowed, planted and reaped, and then found that in order to market tholr surplus grain they would have to haul It from 40 to 120 miles, to tho end of the railroad. This of course left them no profit, but they had the grain; it having been harvested, it paid to haul It away even 100 miles or more. With a railroad, or railroads, the production of that region would be multiplied. There's a vast area up there of vacant, unused, arable land, that will yield good or fair crops of hardy grains almost every year, mil lions of bushels. And still large quantities of stock for export can bo raised, too. And In tho region that a railroad would traverse are also great bodies1 of good timber. It is a land of plen tiful natural resources, if not the most Inviting In the country, and it ALL Mi:.lCO TAKES UATII. Public at Large Attain Condition Next to Godliness. City of Mexico, June 24. All Mex ico Joined today In the observance of the birthday of St. John the Baptist by taking a bath, and as a result this city and the republic at large has at tained to that condition which Is next to Godliness. The municipal fathers have taken expedient measures to pro vide a sufficient quantity of water for the ablutions of the faithful. It Is estimated that about D, 000, 000 gallons of the cleansing element was used to day by the Inhabitants of the federal district in honoring St. John. In addition to those who took theirs In bath tubs and bathing houses, thou sands of the less fastidious have re paired to. the rivers, creeks and canals, which today are swarming with bath ers, clad In more or less decolette cos tumes. The more pious are spending the entire day in the water, such be ing considered in Mexico a special means of grace. St. John's Day is perhaps more uni versally observed in Mexico than in any other Catholic country, and for many of the populace Its observance provides the only thorough bath of the year. Even that class of Mexicans corresponding to the wandering and weary Willies of the United States overcome their aversion to water on this day and date only and participate In the all-pervading wetness. nodim: cask in court. Famous route of Union County Will Not Down. Sheriff C'hllders has for service the summons and copies of the complaint In a new action entitled Fred X. No dine, administrator, and Eliza No (llne, vs. P. L. Richmond, W. T. Wright, F. A. E. Starr, W. J. ToWn- ley and others, says the La Grande Star. The cult Is new In title only and is in fact a resurrection of an old case which Involves some of the transactions of over 20 years ago. This was at a time when Fred Nodlne was supposed to bo a man of wealth and when he had placed his property In a trusteeship for tho purpose of straightening up his affairs. In the end he lost, his property and the great bulk of his Indebtedness remained un paid. The case has gone to tho su preme court two or three times. Fred Xodlne. the original plaintiff, died in poverty several months ago. Tho complaint In the caso reviews In detail transactions covering a long period of time and Is without ques tion the largest document of the kind ever filed In the circuit court In this district. It covers 284 typewritten pages. Lomax & Anderson of Baker City are the attorneys for the plain tiffs. Rucklon's Arnica Salvo Wins. Tom Moore, of Rural Route 1, Cochran, Ga., writes: "I had a bad ssre come on the Instep of my foot and could find nothing that would heal It until I tried Bucklen'a Arnica Salve. Less than half of a 2 cent box won the day for me by affecting a perfect cure." Sold under guaran tee at Tallman & Co.'s drug store. Much Hay Destroyed. Fire, believed to have been caused by tramps smoking and throwing matches about carelessly, destroyed a stack of 375 tons of alfalfa hay stored near the warehouse of Caster & Thrush, to whom It belonged, at Wa pato early Sunday morning, says the Yakima Republic. The hay was stacked underneath a roof supported on a light frame work. Smoke was first observed com ing from the roof at 7:30 o'clock and three hoboes were seen to leave the stack at the same time. It is sup posed that these men passed ths night on or near the haystack and smoking or cooking. Several bales of the hay are ' said to have fallen from the stack and to have been utilized for some time past by hoboes who built themselves a comfortable sleeping apartment with the loose bales. Sheriff Edwards and Deputy Grant went to Wapato yesterday to Investi gate, but the hoboes said to be re sponsible for the fire have not yet been located. The hay was Insured for $2500. DeWitt's Little Early Risers, the famous little liver pills, are sold by Tallman & Co. ought ere this to have had 10 times Its present products. But King Har riman would neither build a railroad nor permit any one else to do so. Now It is reported that the people tween Shanlko and Bend, are organ izing to build a railroad themselves. They believe that by raising a com paratively small sum and actually beginning operations, capital to finance the project can be obtained and very likely they are right un less Harrlman has his grip on all the routes and doesn't buy, or scare off whomsoever attempts to build the road. But It is to be presumed that these people know pretty well what they are about. It Is to be hoped so, and that they can Bucceed. An appeal is made to Portland and Portland capitalists to help thjls project, and It certainly would be greatly beneficial to this city, as well (is to that neglected and suffering re gion, If they could do so. There Is capital enough In Portland to build or finance this 100 miles of railroad, and that It would pay there seems to be no room to doubt. It Is dlflcult to fathom Harri man's motives or policy In "bottling Up" two-thirds of Oregon year after year. One would think from his ac tions that he had some malevolent spite at Oregon, or that Just for his own sardonic pleasure he desired to keep that great region rallroadless as a temptation to others to try to build through It, only to prevent them and so show his power.
