PORTER, INDICTED FOR LAND FRAUD Unable, to Give Bond and Having Failed to Answer to Subpoena Ho Is IxxlgtM In Jail Formerly Resi dent of This City and Wood Dealer at Mcnclwmi Recently Moved to Benton County. The seriousness of the Umatilla county land fraud cases wu brought vividly to mind in Portland Friday night, when K. E. Porter, a former resident of this city and onae the lending wood dealer of Meacham, was placed under arrest in Benton county, his present home, and on fail ure . to give bonds was immediately placed in the Multnomah county Jail on a charge of conspiracy to defraud the United States government out of valuable lands on the Blue moun tains near Meacham. Mr. Porter Is well known In this city and for a number of years han dled practically all of the wood ship ped out of Meacham and was one of the foremost dealers In fuel in eastern Oregon. That he was inti mately and directly connected with the fraudulent acquisition of Umatilla Indian bind is the belief of the fed eral grand Jury which has been In session in Portland for the pnHt two weeks. The Oregon Dally Journal of Saturday says of Mr. Porter's arrest: Robert E. Porter, formerly a well known wood and timber dealer in Umatilla county and against whom an indictment charging conspiracy to de fraud the United States government, was returned several days ago by the federal grand Jury, was brought to Portland last night by a deputy Uni ted States marshal and placed in the Multnomah county Jail. Lowell, one of the attorneys for the saloon men, brought up the subject of the suit that was filed by Anton Nolte. and Intimated that the plaintiffs will file an. amend ed complaint soon. As to the exact status of the Nolle case there seems much doubt and seemingly the saloon men. are more or less at sea as to what course they will pursue. Apparently their com plaint as it now stands is of no use to them for the only thing prayed for, an order restraining the county court from issuing the prohibition proclamation, was denied. This is the opinion held by District Attorney Phelps who regards that case as set tled unless an amended complaint Is filed. When Interviewed today attorneys for the saloon men seemed to be some what In doubt as to what they will do. But It Is understood a conference will be held this evening and In all prob ability a line of action agreed upon. Should it be considered worth while to carry their fight further an amend ed complaint will be filed and Judge Bean asked to set a date for a trial of the case upon Its merits. ! TRADING CENTER FOR ALL CLASSES BOSTON STORE (WHERE YOU TRADE TO HAVE) CHASES ROBBER ALL OVER STATE OF OREGON Man Wanted in Alaska for Embezzle i.ient Is Finally Run to Earth. After a chase lasting four years William Sanders. Indicted at Nome, Alaska, has been run to earth and Is now In Jail at Katella. Alaska., The arrest is directly due to the ac tivity of Joe Warren, former chief of police in Spokane, who ran down Sanders and has been hot on his trail for months. Warren Is now a special agent for the federal government and has the Alaska territory to cover. "I got onto this man Sanders' trail a number of months ago and located him at Sumpter, Ore. I hurried there for him and mised him by a few days," stated Warren. this morning. "Then came the chase. I followed him to Baker City, The Dalles, Cas cade Locks, Portland, Seattle and fi nally found, he had struck back to Alaska. "I could not catch up with him In the states, for about every time I would get him located he would move away pnd I had to hunt him again. He wa. not aware, however, that I was on his trail, but couldn't have dodged me better had he tried to do so. "The arrest is particularly gratify ing in view of the fact that before I took up the chase three other offi cers had been after him for several years. He was Indicted for embezzle ment at Nome by the federal grand Jury In 1904 and skipped out at once. I have been expecting to hear of his arrest as I wired the marshal at Cor dova near Valdez to look out for him. Tho marshal, acting under by In structions, caught him at Katella, He will le returned to Seattle, where I will take him In charge and escort him back to Nome for trial. In spite of the time elapsed the witnesses in the case are still In Nome. I do not know the amount he Is charged with embezzling, but it was enough to make his capture worth while." Spokane Chronicle. OREGOXIANS ARE GLAD. Pendleton and Umatilla County Peo ple Send Greetings from Califor nia. 'The East Oregonlan has Just re ceived the following letter of con gratulations to the people of Umatil la county from the "Oregon colony" In Los Angeles. ' Los Angeles, Cal., June 20. (Editor East Oregonlan.) There has been great rejoicing among a little com pany of Oregonlans here in southern California since the returns from the recent Oregon election reached us, and we wish to extend our congratu lations to the good people of Umatilla county for taking the stand they did and voting out the institution that has so long wielded Its power for eyll. We would have liked to have had a part In the actual work of re-making Pendleton, but since that could not be, nothing will give us greater pleasure than to some day walk down the streets of the "new city," free from the sights that have caused so much sorrow as well as always a feel ing of disgust a clean Pendleton.
