on the repairs to the Court street
macadam which has proved to be unsatisfactory-

several weeks and a force of 25 men
will be employed.
Ross Newport will have charge of
the work and the outfits will arrive
this evening from Hermlston. The
street was macadamized several
months ago, but has not proved to be
satisfactory either to the city or the
construction company, and it will be
worked over entirely and made good.
The surface will practically all be re
placed with new but it Is thought that
the foundation of the macadam is all

COME TO PENDLETON.

An earnest effort Is to be made to
bring the next convention of the state
druggists' association to this city and
Pendleton pharmacists will go to Long
Beach In July with the intention of
capturing that honor for Pendleton.
"No session of the druggists' asso
ciation has ever been held In eastern
Oregon and we think it is time this
section of the state Is being recogniz
ed," declared A. C. Koeppen today.
Acting upon the desire to have their
fellow pharmacists come here the
Koeppen brothers and other local men
are planning a little campaign to that
end. The session this year will be
held at Long Beach on July 7, 8, 9,
and 10. At that time the time and
place for the next meeting will be de
cided upon.
While plans have not been fully
perfected it is suggested by Mr. Koep
pen that a portion of the convention
time be passed In this city and the re
mainder at Wenaha springs.
In many respects the druggists'
conventions are more In the nature of
outings than business gatherings.
While some business is transacted,
those In attendance also have much
time for pleasure and. it Is believed
that the attractions of the Blue moun
tain resort will appeal to them. The
wives and daughters of the druggists
also accompany them upon their an
nual gatherings and the sessions are
very' pleasant socially. Last year the
convention was held at Seaside at the
same time as the O. N. G. encampment.

Philippine Assembly Voices Senti
ment of People.
Manila, June 20. The Philippine
assembly today, on the eve of ad
journment, declared by a vote of 67
to 15 that Independence was the as
piration of the Filipino people and
that that they were ready for Imme
diate Independence.
Speaker Osemena, In addressing the
house formally at the close of the
session, brought up the question. He
said that It was his aspiration to have
Independence. The people wanted It
and their acts and accomplishment
showed that they were capable of re
ceiving It.
The Progressista party leaders de
manded a separate vote on the ques
tion, their spokesman declaring that
the people were not yet ready for
complete Independence. All wanted
independence, he said, some day; but
the time was not yet ripe for It.

HURLS BABE TO SAFETY.
Woman Cut Down by Train. Saves

Tacoma, Wash., June 20. Tearing
down the curved grade on the east
side of the. Puyallup river bridge
early this morning, the last outbound
lnterurban train from Tacoma to Se
attle passed over the prostrate form
of Mrs. George Sloan, an Indian wo
man about 30 years old, who lay
asleep on the track with her 5-months-old
baby at her side.
Both of the woman's legs were sev
ered near the hips, but the baby was
not bruised or Injured. It is believed
the babe will die from exposure. Mrs.
Sloan was hastened to the hospital,
dying a few hours later from the
shock and loss of blood.
As the train bore down uoon the
woman she was aroused from the deep
fatigue and raising herself to a sitting
posture, frantically grabbed the sleep
ing baby and tossed it from the rails.
Barely had the tiny bundle been hurl
ed away than the train passed over
the woman's limbs knd with a shriek
she fell back unconscious.

ARREST WHITE SLAVE TRADERS
Federal Officers Raid Tliree Houses

Chicago, June 20. Federal officers
have raided three houses, arresting
about 25 ladles and several men, In

dicate, the members of which, It Is
charged, have been Importing women

Officials claim that at least 100 women

Fifty Drowned.
Guthrie, Okla., June 20. As near
ly as can be estimated, 50 persons
have lost their lives In Oklahoma
from drowning In the recent flood
season, and as many more have been
killed otherwise by storms and lightn
ing. In the vicinity of Hoffman alone
18 persons "have been drowned, the
last being Newton and William Slld
ham, who attempted to ford a swollen
stream.

strict watch the police have been un
able to locate the person responsible
for the greater portion of 12 fires
since last night. Since noan today
three were discovered following upon
the series of this morning, all small
affairs, being discovered before they
made any headway. The office of
Rldgeway Wilson architect, was vls
sted in his absence and fire kindled
among drawlnfs on his desk. W. H.
Mason from the adjoining office ex
tinguished the fire. Twenty minutes
later the Incendiary started a fire In
the office of George Carter and com
pany, commission agents, while the
staff were absent, but no damage re
sulted, a' reward will probably be
offered for his apprehension. Near
ly every merchant In the congested
business section has empolyed a spe
cial watchman and dozens of specials
have been sworn In by the municipal
authorities.
Looking for Model Court House.
Judge J. B. Olmstead and Commis
sioner Sam Lltch of Wallowa county,
are In the city this afternoon Inspect
ing the Umatilla county court house
with a view to securing Ideas for a
new building In their county. They
looked over the Union county house
yesterday and tomorrow will go to
Heppner to Inspect the Morrow coun
ty building and will return to Wallowa
with many excellent Ideas of county
buildings. Wallowa county has Just
settled a long drawn out county seat
fight and as the matter seems to be
permanently settled an elegant court
house will be erected at Enterprise
this year. Commissioner Sam Lltch
of Wallowa county, formerly resided
In the Cold Springs country In the
north part of this county, and Is ac
quainted with all the old pioneers.

several days and has Just completed

has been a well-founded belief here
that a mill would be a paying prop

the acreage of wheat has Increased
