Cove fruit growers commenced this week harvesting the new crop of strawberries. The yield is pro nounced good and the same report may be sald'to also apply to all the small berries and to tree fruits at well. The larger part of the Cove strawberries will be consigned to Blackburn & Breck In Baker City. Most of these shipments will be dis posed of locally as Baker City fur nlshes'a demand that will nearly take up all the strawberries that the Cove district produces There Is usuajly some of tne cove surplus owpuu of In La Grande, but this will not be the case to the same extent as former ly. With the railroad at hand the Cove growers can dispose or tneir fruit of this class much easier anr bet ter than by making the early morn ing drive across the valley. At the same time the demands here can be easily taken care of by the berry growers of May Park and Frultdale. The early cherries In Cove will he (ready for picking by the Fourth of July. All the canning varieties win probably go to the Oregon Packing company at Portland. It Is estimated that the entire output of cherries in Grand Ronde this year will make a total of 200 tons. Of this amount the Cove will produce more than half probably 125 to HO tons. A r.umber of the growers have decided to employ Japanese neip in laaing care of the crop. The cherry season romes on with a ruHh and there Is but little chance for delay. A dif ference of a couple of days In getting the cherries off the trees may mean a great deal to the man who has thb crop, and the proposition has gone beyond the sentimental stage. New Road Assured. "The poople of the Nezperce prairie are highly elated with the prospeots of securing within the near future a railroad from Nezperce to the Cul- dosac-GrangevIlle line," said W. J. Ramey, who is a business visitor In the city today, says the Lewlston Tel ler. "The people have the fullest con fidence in the proposition," contin ued Mr. Ramey. "and had two days ago suoscrinea jiv.uuu or me re quired sum of $50,000. It is expected the entire bonus will be subscrlDea within a few days and construction Is promised within a short time after the bonus is completed." - To Divide Yakima County. Business men of Toppenish have started a movement to divide the county. The matter has been taken up in the Toppenish Commercial club and a committee has been appointed to ascertain the views of people WIIKlti: IS MAKION BARNES? Ilrotlit-r of Murderer of Mrs. Aldrlcli I MIshIiic Had Been Threatened by Bud. Where Is Marlon Humes? asks the Walla Walla Statesman. Can anyone tell where the brother "Bud" ordered away from home a few months ago, Is? What has become of the boy whom "Bul" gnve 10 days to get out of the country and who suddenly disappear ed, leaving his clothes and a month's wages? Has the lad been murdered who was last seen in the company of "Bud" go ing up the lonely road over which Mrs. Anna Aldrlch was lured to her death? . These are some of the questions the sheriffs office Is trying to solve now Last fall Marlon, a brother about 20 years old, became Involved In some grave family troubles with "Bud". Marlon was last seen with "Bud" driv ing up tho same road that Mrs. Al drlch and he were seen going over on tho day of May 1. When he dlsap peared he left his clothes and i month's wages. Since the Investigation to ascertain the whereabouts of Marlon was start ed, a telephone message was received by the sheriff from some one who said he had a letter from Marion, with a Heppner, Ore., postmark. But this letter has not been seen by the sheriff and it Is suggested that the message might have been "faked." But one thing Is certain, Marion has not been seen since the day ho went up the fatal road with his broth er and nothing definite has been heard from him. The story of the letter will be at once Investigated by the sheriff's of flee and If Marlon Barnes is ally he will bo found. If he Is, not alive, a search for his dead body will be made at once. No numbug. No humbug claims have to be made for Foley's Honey and Tar, the well known remedy for coughs, colds and lung troubles. The fact that more bottles of Foley's Honey and Tar are used than any other cough remed Is the best testimonial of Its great merit Why then risk taking some unknown preparation when Foley's Honey and Tar costs you no more and is safe and sure. Pendleton Drug Co. Woman Kills Wildcat Mrs. Doc Myers, a resident of East Selah valley, had a thrilling experi ence with a full grown wildcat last Saturday, says the Taklma Republic. Mrs. Myers lives about four miles from North Yakima. While attend ing to household duties Saturday morning she heard a great cackling of hens In the barnyard. Rushing to thedor to ascertain the nature and cause' of the commotion, Mrs. Myers beheld a huge wildcat running after a pot hen. At sight' of the woman the wildcat made off Into the bushes. Soon after Mrs, Myers again taw the cat coming toward the house. He was Just emerging from the Taklma throughout the lower valley. Ap parently the movement is well under way. The committee asks the citi zens to whom the letters are address ed to discuss the matter with their neighbors, and if sentiment Is fa vorable, to arrange for a meeting with the committee at an early date. One of the signers of the letters that have gone out is Mayor Grant of Top penish. Another is G. S. McArthur, editor of the Toppenish Review. Strawberry Crop Short. "The strawberry crop Is Just about harvested," Is a statement made by one of the produce dealers of the city, says the Walla Walla Statesman. What promised to be the biggest i crop ever cut was about two-miras shot by the cold weather that follow ed" the warm weather in April. The crop was not only short this year but the berries were small, of Inferior quality and not of the usual good fla vor. Nevertheless an estimate of the amounts shipped from Milton and Freewater this season place the value of the crop from that section at $50, 000, Shortage can not be ascribed to the cherry crop, however. It will keep all the produce merchants, can nerymen and shippers hustling to handle this crop. It is certainly a bumper yield. Currents and black caps are com ing Into market, but It is toe early yet to be able to tell what the output of hese fruls will be. Was Saloon, Now Theater. C. A. Gardlnler, owner of the build ing In which the Hickory saloon Is located, has decided to turn the lowei room Into a theater, says the La Grande Star.' He states that he will put in raised Beats and fix up the house In good shape for the purposes Intended. He expects the exhibition apparatus to be here within a short time and it Is the Intention to have the place open for business very shortly after the first of the coming month. Mrs. S. L. Bowen of Wayne, W. Va., writes: "I was a sufferer from kid ney dsease, so that at times I could not stand straight. I took Foley's Kidney Remedy. One dollar bottle and part of the second cured me en tirely." Foley's Kidney Remedy works wonders where others are a total fatlure. Pendleton Drug Co. Mrs. Vern Baber of Halsey,. drove to town and disappeared Monday, while her husband was away from home. She was about 25 years of age and bears a good reputation. river, which he swam for the second time in his endeavor to capture a live hen. This time Mrs. Myers procured n shotgun In the house and as she started for the barnyard she saw the cat after the same hen he had chased before. Wildly excited, Mrs. Myers took aim, and closing her eyes fired. She was but a short distance from the swiftly-moving cat and pursued hen. When the smoke cleared away Mrs. Myers saw cat and chicken stretched out before her. the chicken dead and the cat dying. A second charge Into the body of the cat settled all his desire for barnyard products. When the animal was picked up later by Mr. Myers lt was found to be one of the largest bobcats seen In the val ley. This Is the second cat that has been killed In the last week In East Selah. W. R.
