A work train with 65 men leaves at 4 o'clock this morning for the district below Elgin, says the La Grande Star. They are In reality a part of the outfit which will complete the Wallowa extension of the Elgin branch. For the next week or two they will be at work finishing up the roadbed and track between Elgin and the Looking Glass. This much In the way of better ment of the track already laid will be done while the bridge over tne Grande Ronde Is being finished. When this structure Is In shape to let the construction trains across the steel rails the Iron steed will proceed onward toward Wallowa. A part of the bridge crew has been at work for the past week at the Cabin creek bridge, between Elgin and the Looking Glass. The bridge at this point was taken out by the high water In April, and only a tem orary structure was put In for the purpose of bringing up the sawlogs for the Palmer mill. The class of work now being done Is such as will permit the heaviest en gines and equipment to be run over the Wallowa branch. The crew that leaves this morning will do some ex tensive ballasting and the road will be put In first-class condition as they go along so that when completed for the laying of the track It will be ready In short order to turn over to the operating department. have seen It. Remember the start ing point Wednesday morning Is the time at the Buslnea Association rooms at 8 o'clock. To Know Themselves. Arrangements have been complet ed for the Business Men's excursion which will take place Wednesday. All that could do so have furnished their own conveyance and rigs will be furnished by the Business Men's association for others. The trip will include a drive to Dutch flat from where the .whole county and that of Klickitat with the snow peaks in the background may be seen. Then Pleasant Ridge and other places ill be visited. Lunches will be taken and enjoyed In some delightful spot beside a purling stream. Orchards will be visited and the party will re turn better able to talk about the vi cinity of The Dalles because they Cougar Lurks Near Town. It has been said by many people living east of town that a cougar has been roaming around In the Slide creek and Pass creek country, says the Long Creek Ranger. It Is be lieved that this animal has been in that section for several years. Wil liam Chapman and Stephen Harer have lost sheep by an animal for some time but they were not satisfied in their minds as to the animal. Two years ago Mrs. Nellie Woodall had a few head of pet lambs. Each day one of these pets would come up missing. Since that time different people In that section have heard or seen this wandering animal. Mrs. Woodall says she has heard the screams of the lonely animal, but dla not know where the noise was com ing from. There is no mistake but what this mysterious creature Is noth ing more than a large cougar. Curk Murr is suld to have seen this sneak ing animal a few hundred yards below Mrs. Woodall's home one day last week. Beet Crop Looks Good. Beet thinning for this year has been completed, says the La Grande Ob server. Field Manager Sebbelov, by experimenting with white labor and taking more stringent methods with the Japanese employes, has rushed this yearly tack with better results than heretofore. The 2300 acres of beets cultivated by the Amalgamated Sugar company Is now on the second lap of Its growth. Thinning Is always a cumbersome duty at the best but by systematizing matters this year a lit tle fore with Jap contractors, the work has been done better' and more quickly. Stringent contracts backed by heavy bonds have insured good results from the Japanese. The beet crop, especially about La Grande, Is looking fine, and the com pany looks for a duplication of last year's crop. The cold weather re tarded rapid growth slightly, but since the thermometer has shot up, the sugar beets have done likewise. There Is every reason to believe that the beet crop will exceed all records of the past the same as the cherry crop gives evidence of doing. DeWltt's Witch Hazel Salve. For months Pendleton readers have seen the constant expression of praise tor Doan's Kidney Pills, and read about the good work they have done In this locality. Not another remedy ever produced such convincing proof of merit. . Mrs. H. Swaggert, living at 811 Garden street, Pendleton, Ore., says: "Both my husband and myself have used Doan's Kidney Pills with the most gratifying results. Mr. Swag gert was troubled severely with his back and kidneys for a long time and never received any relief until Doan's Kidney Pills were brought to his at tention and he procured a box at the Pendleton Drug Co. They gave him great relief and he thinks very high ly of them. I also used Doan's Kid ney Pills and found that It anly re quired a few doses to remove the lameness and pain caused from dis ordered kidneys. I really believe that kidney trouble would be less prev alent if more sufferers knew of Doan's Kidney Pills." (From state ment given In 1906.) Tested and Proven. Mrs. Swaggert was again interview ed on November 18, 1907, and said: "We still continue to use Doan's Kid ney Pills and find them Just as ef fective as when they first came to our notice. We keep them In the house at all times and really think we could not get along without them." For sale by all dealers. Price 50 cents. Arrangements have been practically completed by the war and Indian de partments to send the runaway Uto Indians back to their reservation In Utah, says an Omaha dispatch. This Is the bunch of Indians that made the sensational tramp across the country from their reservation Into Wyoming and the Powder river coun try a year or more ago. . The party, several hundred In num ber, was headed off on Powder river by the Tenth and Sixth United States cavalry and were taken to Fort Meade and kept on the military res ervation for the remainder of the winter and then moved up to the Cheyenne river agency of the Chey ennes at Thunder Buttes, S. D. Here they threatened to break away on a raiding expedition because of the lack of supplies and for the fur ther reason that they were required to send their papooses to school at the Indian school at the Cheyenne agency, so.me 80 or more miles east of Thunder Buttes. The Second United States cavalry was sent to the agency and Thunder Buttes to hold the. Indians in check. Matters were finally compromised and the children were sent to school and a large number of the Indian men given employment at railroad work at Rapid City. The greater por tion of the troops were sent back to Fort Des Moines. One company remained at Thunder Buttes to watch the remainder of the Indians left there in camp. A part of this company will escort the Indians back to their reservation In Utah. The trip will be made by marching and will occupy two or three weeks. Statues for Bnker Church.
