News. Mr. Roberta is an enthusiast
over the rulHlng of potatoes In the
upper Snake river valley and has the
figures to show that their production
pays better than raining sugar beets,
beside providing labor for white
workmen Instead of Japanese as the
sugar industry does.
Ho states that even at 30 cents a
hundred potatoes can be made a more
profitable crop thun sugar beets and
with far less labor. Blackfoot for
several years has had the contract
for supplying the Oregon Short Line
and Union Pacific systems with po
tatoes, furnishing between 40 and 60
car loads annually.
Hundreds of carloads are shipped
from Blackfoot, Idaho. Falls and
points on the Yellowstone park
branch each year,( finding, market In
Salt Lake, Denver, Omaha. Kansas
City and other eastern and southern
points, many carloads being shipped
to Texas cities.
He expects potatoes to brln a hlr
price this year In Idaho as the Greely
Colo., crop has been practically ruin
ed and Idaho will be called upon to
supply the great market that the
Greeley section has been supplying
for many years.
llili Shipment of Fruit Boxes.
The box factory department of the
Grand Itonde Lumber company at
Perry Is xhli ping on an u'erago a
carload of fruit boxes per day for the
fruit growers' association of Grand
Junction, Colorado, gays the La
Grande Star. The company was
awarded early last spring the con-
ract for delivering 75 carloads of
hose boxes to the Colorado fruit
growers. The box factory has been
msy with this order for the past five
weeks. Peuch and pear boxes are
now being cent out and after this
iurt of the contract Is filled the fac
ory will begin on apple boxes.
A couple of months will be requir
ed to complete tho order. This order
for fruit boxes for Colorado was se
cured by the Grande Rondo Lumber
company In competition with the
coast mills.
In addition to the box shipment
he Perry compuny is now shipping
o the eastern markets on an average
of 40.000 feet of lumber per day.

young man, whose age Is reckoned at
about 21 or 22 by Coroner Frank, waa

The s.ilncin men of Grant county
have undertaken to make a test of
the prohibition law as adopted by the
people of that county on June first,
says a Grant county Item.
They have engaged a couple of able
attorneys. Messrs. Errett Hicks and
V. (5. Cozml, and the prellmlnur
brush was pulled off Monday. Neither
the contestants nor their attorneys
have outlined the proceeding, nor
the grounds upon which the measure
will be contested, but rumors hav
i: that the petition was faulty, In
that one thing was petitioned for,
while another was voted on $nd that
the measures are not Identical.
The petition and notices called for a
vote on local option, while the ballots
named prohibition as the Issue.
Whether tho use of these terms
are Interchangeable within the mean
ing of the law may be for the courts
to decide.
It 1h also understood that If the
plea falls before Judlcilal rulings that
there are otfW and stronger grounds
upon which to contest the order for
closing. It Is perfectly natural for
the liquor men to exhaust their right
and this they will undoubtedly do.
On the other hand It Is rumored
thnt a victory before the court on
technicalities would be but short lived
as there Is another election In Novem
ber and the technical errors which
would Invalidate an election would
permit a vote to be token at any time,
nnd the presidential election would
seem to offer to the drys a chance to
bring the matter up without the preju
dice that comes from special elections.
At any rate It would seem that tbe
battle Is on, and will not end until
one side or the other goes down In
hopeless defeat.

At 9:50 o'clock last night the whole,
country In the Cornucopia mountains
70 miles northeast of Baker, felt a
heavy shock, similar to that which ,
folows an earthquake. Window rat
tled, dishes shifted and changed
their positions on cupboard shelves,
foundations shook and houses sway
ed to and fro, says the Baker City
Herald.

contents of the flash with a view to
determining whether the man took
poison. The absence of any apparent
cause of death leads to the suspicion
that It is a case of suicide.
Huns Sheriff In Effigy.
A certain element in this county
who have no love or liking for a
sheriff who does his duty, went so
far in their ante-electlonf, work as to
burn In effigy the popular sheriff of
Crook county on the morning of elec
tion. And that cheap demonstration
of spite, opposition and littleness re
sulted In making more votes for sher
iff Elklns. He carried Prlnevllle by
a majority of 71 over hla closest com
petitor, and carlred the county with
628 votes over Gongleton, the heaviest
vote ever given a candidate In Crook

Cherries Rlxn Fast.
Cherries of the Kentish variety are
coming Into market In large lots Just
now, says the Lewiston Teller While
at the Weber fruit packing plant this
morning the cherries were being
packed for shipment. "There Is go
ing to be an immense crop of cher
ries this season," said R. H. Weber
his morning, "the biggest Wasco
county has ever had." When calling
at The Dalles cannery It was found
that all Is In readiness there for the
work to begin next week when Royal
Anns will begin to come Into market.
It Is believed by all fruit merchants
that there will be floods of cherries
In market In 10 or 14 days.
Drrlnro County "Dry."
At a session of the county court
held yesterday, an order was made
declaring the result of the recent
election and prohibiting the sale of
Intoxicating liquors throughout Gil
liam county, after midnight June 30
1908, says the Condon Globe.
According to the provisions of the
local option law, the county court Is
compelled to declare the result of the
election 11 days after the general
election, or as near thereafter as prac
ticable. Miners who were working on the
night shift in the Cornucopia mines
came to the surface as quickly as pos
sible nnd refused to reenter the mine
during the night. They plainly felt
the shock though some were working
a long distance below the surface.
At Halfway citizens noticed the vi
brations and the supposition was that
a powder mngazine rtclonglng to some
of the mines hod been exploded.
Richland people also experienced the
.same sensation. In the vicinity of
Halfway it Is claimed that the sky
assumed a lighted appearance with a
purple tinge. Reports from Cornu
copia do not state that this condition
was observed there.
From Wallowa county this aftei
noon It Is learned that many people
were awakened by the shock last
night and the same Is true from Iron
Dyke and the country surrounding the
Oregon-Idaho line. It Is stated that
tills afternoon smoke can be seen
clinging around the mountains In
Wallowa county, and at Halfway this
morning smoke was plainly discern
able hanging over the valley.
All Magazines Intact.
Efforts have been made to reach
many of the mines In the county to
the northwest where It Is known ex
plosives In any quantity were stored
today, nnd each has reported that Its
magazine is Intact, and that no ex
plosion of powder or dynamite of any
size has been set off that Is known.
At this time the whole matter Is more
or less of a mystery with the only
possible conclusion that there has
been an eruption or a sliding of some
section of the mountain country.
Will Coach Whitman Team.
J. Merrill Blonchard, former quar
terback on the Bowdoln college,
Maine, football team and more re
cently coach of the Washington uni
versity (St. Louis) team, has been se
lected to coach the football eleven
at Whitman college as well aa to as
sume general charge of athletics at
the Walla Walla college In the ca
pacity of director, Mr. Bluneharti
takes the position left vacant by
Coach Bolrd, who has severed his con
nection with the Missionary college.
The new coach comes to Whitman
with an excellent record and the man
agement is expecting good results
from his coaching next year.
Washington Mayors to Meet.
Mayor Miller will shortly invite the
mayors of the various cities of Wash
ington to hold a conference In Seat
tie during the first week of October
to take up questions of interest to
municipalities and to devise plans to
procure needed laws at the next ses
sion of the legislature, states a Se
attle report. In a letter to Mayor
Miller Corporation Counsel Scott Cal
houn suggested that .the proposed
convention he beld early so that af
ter action ha been taken by the va
rious municipal representatives, time
will be had to draft the bills to be
presented to the legislature.
