An Interesting story of prospective farm development comes from Mason county, says the Seattle Post-Intelll- (roneer. It Is reported that a colony of Swiss farmers has secured title to 200,000 acres of logged-off lands, which will be cleared and converted Into modern farms. The plan Is to bring the colonists direct from Swit zerland, and allot a tract of 20 acres for each family. They will come with farming Implements, home furnish ings ami native stock, and with enough money to enter, upon the logged-off lands and carve farms and gardens from the forests of fertility. In addition to planting and cultivat ing the crops native to Fuget Sound they will Introduce several new Ideas from their old homes in the country of the Alps. Colonization Is one of the success ful plans adopted by the Swiss peo ple for establishing prosperous farm ers and dairymen. There are several colonies In California, and a few on the Atlantic coast. They were created by sending out cruisers and prospec tors In advance to spy over the coun try proposed for settlement. When the preliminary reports were made, new men would be sent to the scene of the future colony. After all had been satisfied of the advisability of making the location, the . colonists would set sail for America. They chartered vessels and brought all their home treasures. In that manner entire families were picked up and transferred to a new country without any disappointments. Ideal Spot for Colony. The logged-off lands ef Mason county present Ideal spots for such colonies as proposed by the Sr-iss peo ple. The country 19 well provided with water for all purposes. Its transportation facilities are good, and will be Increased every year for some time in the future by the construc tion of new railroads and placing of more boats on the navigable Waters. Every plant and. vino native to the Fuget sound country grows to perfec tion, In Mason county. The farmers can work every day in the year, be cause there are no extreme periods of heat or cold. Although the coun ty has an area of 900 square miles, much of It remains In its native con dition. It was formerly one dense foreBt, and the logging Industry Is the great field of labor in that district today. According to plans announced, the SWISS COLONY . FOR WASHINGTON EXCHANGES THE EMPIRE loaded on the cars and started for home ranches of the purchasers. Parsons and Hanley of Harney val ley were the sellers and J. M. Holt of Miles City, Mont., and E. G. Gould of Kearney, Neb., were the purchasers. Holt bought 700 head of yearling steers, paying $17 per head. Gould took 400 head of three year olds which he got for $25 per head; COO at $32 per head; 2000 head of yearling heifers at $13 per head. Baker City Democrat. Monster Land Deal. The largest sale of real estate in the history of the northwest where tho transfer is beinb made by one firm is now being negotiated at We- natchee and involves the sale of the lareo stock ranch of which Letser Coffin of this city Is the owner of a half interest, says the Lewlston Tel ler.
