Visitors Here From Different Parts of Oregon and Washington Many Attend Commencement a Wliiumm College Tlere Is Rapid Growth in Wheat Crop at This Time. Weston, June 10. The Weston Normal commencement was one of the most delightful events given In the history- of the school. There were people here from different parts of the state of Oregon and Washington, tv ho had relatives among the 22 young people who graduated, and who are now prepared to enter upon their life work. The program was carried out as published in the East Oregonian earlier in the week. One of the most successful terms in the history of the school is now at an end, and the stu dents are rarldly leaving for their re spective homes. Quite a good rain fell In this vicin ity Monday evening, which was a help to the growing wheat crop. Sevtral of the Westonltes leave to day for Walla Walla to attend the twenty-sixth annual commencement of Whitman college at that place. The city water committe Is engag ed in putting in meters in the Weston homes. Rev. and Mrs. W. E. Achilles have returned from their honeymoon trip, and they will take up their residence here. A number of the former students of the Weston Normal have been here for commencement. The city has passed an ordinance levying the street tax at two mills. The weather has been very warm .the past few days, and it will make a rapid growth in the-wheat. The crop will be but little if any short In this vicinity this season. Thinks It Saved His Life. Walla Walla, June 10. After an effort of five hours and fifteen min utes, the Jury In whose hands rests the fate of Hezekiah H. Barnes, fa miliarly known as "Bud," who is on trial for the brutal murder of Mrs. Anna M. Aldrlch May 1, was secured yesterday afternoon at 2:14. Judge Brents having yesterday morning overruled the motion for a contlnu ance aksed by the defense Saturday afternoon. In all 43 talesmen were examined, during which examinations the defense exercises their right to eight of the 12 peremptory challenges allowed them. The prosecution took exception to none of the talesmen. Freewater, June 10. The warm weather of the past few days Is rip ening the strawberries very rapidly, and they are. now being sent out in large quantities. The great trouble at this time is in securing pickers enough. Growers are offering 35 and 40 cents to have them picked. Owing to the scarcity of help a num ber of Indians from the Umatilla res ervatlon have been employed to pick the crop. Win Gold Medal. Miss Martha Baskett, one of the well known young ladles of this end of the county, won the gold medal In an oratorical contest held at Vincent chapel a few evenings ago. Dewey Crim mins won the medal awarded In the contest held in the Baptist church at thjs place the latter part of the week. Born -To Mr. and Mrs. Alta Rogers Monday, June 8, a daughter. . The child only lived a few hours after birth. Cherries are coming in quite rap- Idly In the last few days. The weath er has been so warm, that they have been ripening rapidly. A heavy crop of cherries is expected in this vicinity. At Meador l'urk. A great many of the people from Milton and the surrounding country visit Meador Park these days, espe cially on Sundays. Friday evening there will be a wrestling match at the park, when Eddie Conners, one of the leading light weight wrestlers In the west, will meet James Casey, a Wal la Walla lad, of more than ordinary ability. This park Is on the lnterur ban between here and Walla Walla, and is one of the chief places of amusement for. the people of Walla Walla in the summer time, as well as for the people of this section. There was a rainfall here Monday evening. Crops and fruits are look ing very good, considering that there has not been the usual amount of rain. Fine Fruit, House. The new fruit house, which Is be ing built by the Fruit Growers' union, is well under way, and will be ready for occupancy by the time the later fruits come in. It will be one of the best and most up to date warehouses in the Pacific northwest. H. D. Lamb is the manager of the union at this time. MAY CELEBRATE. An unknown carpenter fell 50 feet In Portland yesterday striking on the basement steps on his head and was uninjured. His companion landed on his hip and was only sllgtly In Jured.
