Hon. H, M. Cake closed his cam
paign with a speech at Milton Satur
day evening, which was attended by
many of the people of Milton and
the usrroundlng country. It l the
opinion of Milton people that Mr.

he will make a pood showing In the
race.

Decoration day wis duly observed
In Milton this year with appropriate
ceremonies and the local G. A. K. ard
Relief Corps decorated the graves of
departed friends.
A gold medal contest will be held
at Vincent chapel Friday, June 5. All
the contestants live in Milton and
Freewater.

berry day will be observed in Milton
as it has never been before. Hundreds
of people will be hire from different
parts of the county and state. The
horse show In connection will make
the day more enjoyable. Pome of
the finest horses in the state will be
seen and there will be horse races
and sports.
Mr. and Mrs. J. J. Hofer have sold
their residence in Milton and will
leave In a few days for southern Ore
gon, where they will visit for a few
month?.

Curiosity Not Stilled.
A certain 'Tombs prisoner landed lfl
Jail almost penniless. He was a man
who had figured in a number of the
town's shady transactions, and his
name was pretty well known. A few
days after his Incarceration be wrote
to a frieDd asking for a monthly allow
ence of $10 to be continued during his
term of Imprisonment. The friend, re
membering past favors, remitted the
amount each month during a period
that covered two trials and the long
time intervening. One day It occurred
to him to Inquire Into the manner of
expending the allowance. He supposed
It was used to buy occasional extra
mealB, a few cigars and newspapers,
but Just as a matter of curiosity he
asked for particulars. He found to
bis astonishment that the prisoner had
never ordered an extra meal and had
not smoked a cigar all the time he had
. been in jail.
"Then what In thunder," demanded
the man, "have you been doing with
that f 10 a monthr
"I subscriljed to two press clipping
bureaus." replied the prisoner coolly.
"You don't suppose, do you. that I am
going to pass throu?h this, the most
critical time of my life, without find

The Star Chamber.
Perhaps the most Iteautlful and origi
nal scene of all In Mammoth cave Is
the star chamber. At a point In the

brow of a gentle declivity and notes

reunion of the Umatilla County Pio
neers' association came to a close
Saturday night. This was the most
successful reunion In the history of
the association. The weather, crowds
and all were everything that could be
desired. Saturday was political day
and speeches were made by Hon. H. j
M. Cake and many of the Umatilla
county politicians.
Secretary J. M. O'Harra reported
that during the past year 10 members
of the association have died as fol
lows: Nelson Swaggart, Pendleton;
W. H H. Scott. Athena, Jacob Clark,

Normal Commencement.
The commencement for the Weston
Xormal will begin Sunday, June 7,
and it will mark the most successful
year's work in the history of the
school.
The people in this section of the
county are much interested in the re
sult of the election which is being held
today.

Decoration Day Observed by People
of Pilot Rock.
Pilot Rock, June 1. Preparations
for the big celebration which will be
held here July 4 are well under way.
Over $200 has been already subscrib
ed, and there will be no trouble to
raise the required amount of money
according to the reports of the finance
committee.
Decoration day was duly observed
in Pilot Rock. A program was car
ried out consisting of memorial and
patriotic songs.
Many of the Pilot Rock people at
tended the big circus at Pendleton
Saturday.
