Seattle, 4; Vancouver 3, In the first two games of the sec ond series In the Inland Empire league Pendleton has divided even with Walla Walla on the latter's home grounds, Pendleton won Saturday's game by a good margin and lost Sunday's ex hibition by one run. Both teams have been strengthened and are playing good ball. Seven proved to be the traditional lucky number for Pendleton In Sat urday's game, fjr in the Inning ans wering to that numeral, five men In gray were sent across the plate, prac tically winning the game. Walla Walla had made two runs In the first canto and thereafter up to the seventh it was a shut out affair for both sides. After Pendleton's phenomenal spurt. Walla Walla also became industrious and added two. Both Taliaferro and Ehmk did good work In the box, though' the for mer was a little wild, walking four men in the course of the game. The superiority of Van Houten over Munson as a catcher was shown in the number of .stolen bases by each side, Pendleton getting 1 and Walla Walla but one. Pendleton would probably have won Sunday's game but for the fact that Aubln had pitched two games the day before. Lorlmer's team also suf fered when the ball was knocked out into the alfalfa field and lost. . The real trouble, however, was started in the sixth when five hits, one a homer, and two errors, netted Wal la Walla six runs. Then in the tenth with the bases full by a walk and two errors. Wells bunted for an out and then McAllis ter, the phenomenal short stop, made his third hit of the game, bringing' In the winning run. Aubln was injured in the eighth in ning and Dean was sent to the cen ter patch. Adams 8; Wonders 6. The Wonders went down to defeat before the fast ball team from Adams at the Matlock ball park yesterday afternoon. The game was full of er rors owing to the wind and dust which filled the eyes of both ball players and rooters pretty nearly all the time. Tardlff, the Pendleton southpaw, pitched a beautiful game, striking out 13 men and allowing the enemy only five safe hits. Wilson for the visitors also pitched a good game, but was batted pretty freely by the heavy hitters of the Wonders. The management of the Wonders has secured new men and their lineup will be pretty nearly twice as strong as it was yesterday. They will play the Echo team here next Sunday, The Lineup. RruiHed and Beaten, Sees Another Woman Drive Off With Her Brave. An episode that attracted almost a much interest as the circus Saturday evening was an Indian family quarrel that occurred on Court street during the afternoon between the wife of Peter Corbett, the gay Umatilla lo tharlo, and another squaw who sought to steal the affections of the dusky Pete. During the afternoon a fistic bat tle between the two squaws occurred on the streets and apparently Mrs. Corbett was not up to the pugilistic standard that would be expected of one bearing her husband's illustrious name. Following the fight the other woman lured the erring husband Into her buggy and headed towards the reservation. i 1 9TQ But not daunted by her first defeat Corbeits wife Jumped into her own buggy and headed off the runaways. Fortunately for the injured wife her team was the larger of the two and when the eloping couple would try to drive away she would turn across their pathway and block pro ceedings. Side by side and striking at each other with their buggy whips the two squaws drove down Court street to cottonwood and meanwhile the throng gathered. But at the corner of the street a mishap occurred that turned the tide of battle once more against the wife of Corbett The neckyoke of her buggy came unfastened and while she was thus handicapped the run away couple sped towards the reservation EXCURSION PLAXXED FOR STRAWBERRY DAY Scores Would Go Up from Pendleton If Train Run So Trip Could Be Made Same Day. One of the most eloquent, convinc ing and earnest addresses ever given In this city on any subject was deliv ered from the court house steps Sun day afternoon by President S. B. L. Penrose of Whitman college on the economic features of the liquor ques tion. Dr. Penrose did not attempt to de pict the moral phases of the subject but simply appealed to voters and taxpayers from the economic side of question, showing the enormous waste of strength, money, brains and mus cle which is entailed upon the people of the world by the liquor habit. He showed that the amount of money expended annually by the peo ple of the United States for liquor Is about $4.90 per capita, while the the sum expended for education is but slightly over 12 per annum "per capita. He showed that every other enter prise In the world which Is recognis ed as an honorable Institution, pro duces something which is more val uable than the raw material which It uses, while the liquor traffic, the saloon, produces something Infinitely less valuable than the raw material which it uses. "We are planning to make Whit man college the Yale of the north we said Dr. Whitman, "and in that plan we must raise 32,000,000. I re cently called upon a rich Portland man to ask him to help us in this great enterprise, and he told me that he could not help as long as Walla Walla was considered a rough town, a saloon town, an Immoral town, but that he would gladly help when con ditions wore cleaned up and the town made better morally. "So I am Interested in cleaning up Walla Walla morally and I want you people of Pendleton and Umatilla county to vote for prohibition and we across the line In Washington will be encouraged to take a similar step when we have the opportunity." The court house yard was well fill ed with an Interested and apprecia tive audience for Dr. Penrose's address. BIG CROWD SAW BIG CIRCUS.
