Los Angolcs Examiner tells the story:
a little after 2 o'clock John Carroll
the het rlnemaster In the business,
stepped through the flaps at the main
entrance. He was dressed in nis low
cut cont and his patent leather pumps
and there was a silk hat on his head
He looked like an advertising cut for
that superior cigarette used in an
clubs and cafes. He had a long whip
lu his hand. Carroll looked all around
the ring children, children, and
children everywhere! The sloping
stats were hidden behind a great slop
ing bank of eager young faces happy,
smiling faces. John Carroll drew a
long breath and slapped his trouser
leg with the lash of hU whip the
wonderful whip that starts things and
stops things and makes the trick
horses stand around so prettily.
"Ain't It bully?" said John Carroll.
"Ain't It GREAT? Look at 'em. I'll
bet some of 'cm never saw a circus
before In their poor little lives! Lots
of 'cm, you say? Well, we'll give 'em
something they won't forget. ' Never
saw a circus before, eh? Poor little
kids!"
And John went out to give the
clowns some special Instructions.
"Something to work for today," said
he. "I love to clown the Utile kids.
If they like you, they don't put a
handkerchief over their mouths to
hide a smile. They laugh right out.
They'll laugh today."
And Potter, the great Potter of the
Peerless Potters the originallord of
the air, the bills call him added his
little word. Ho was not dressed In his
blue silk tights, for he had been work
ing "with the ushers helping to get the
youngnters Into their seats Just like
any common man.
"I hope they wll like my act,' 'he
said. "Not because It's the greatest
aerial act In the world, but well, be
cause kids enjoy a thing so much, and
I love the little fellers. I'd rather
please these children than all the
grown-ups In California."
The concert band Interrupted Mr.
Potter to play "Old Black Joe." It
was a piece that every child seemed to
know and every boy whistled the air
and every little girl sang the words
the biggest orchestra I have ever lis
tened to. They cheered the band for
playing It. and they chwred still
louder when the bandsmen trooped
over to the entrance, for that meant
that the show was about to begin.
Then John Carroll opened the cur
tains and called "All right, nobert."
The bandmaster raised his baton,
and 25 musicians answered with a
crash, and curtains were drawn aside
and the circus began.
I am not going to write all about
that cirrus It would take up all th-
room in the paper. Just think back
to your first circus; you haven't for
gotten anything that happened, I'm
sure you haven't.
Columbia Commencement.
New York, May 27. Columbia
university's 154th commencement was
observed today, the exercises begin
ning this morning with a procession
of the graduating classes, trustees and
faculties, followed by tho conferring
of degrees and award of honors. Thtf
presentation of the statute of Alexan
der Hamilton by the Association of
the Alumni of Columbia College was
a feature of the afternoon program,
which Includes, luncheons, receptions
and reunions of various classes of
graduates and a baseball game with
the University of Pennsylvania as Co
lumbia's opponent. The anniversary
dinner of the alumni will take place
this evening and will bo followed by
an amateur circus on South Field.
Commencement exercises were also
held by Barnard college today.

Ocean Yacht Race.
Los Angeles, Cal., May 27. An
ocean yacht race to Honolulu, to be
participated In by all the leading clubs
of the coast. Is being projected. The
start will probably be made on July 4.

New Itont Is Finished.
According to information received
In this city this week from W. C.
Thompson, who has been In Seattle
for two weeks, the new steadier Ken
newlek, which is to be operated on
the Columbia river between this city
and Priest Rapids by the Kennewlck
Transportation company, is now com
pleted and today went into commis
sion for a week as an excursion
boat during the visit of the battleship
fleet to Seattle and Tacoma, says a
Kennewlck report.
The Kennewlck is designed to seat
100 passengers and as soon as the ex
cursion dates on the Sound are past
the boat will be brought around to
this city via Portland.
