Celebration of Empire Day, the anniversary of the birth of Queen Victoria, May 24, 1819, began today In London and throughout the empire. As the an niversary this year falls on Sunday, most of the public observances took place toduy. Flags were displayed everywhere and there were special exercises by school children, troops and patriotic organizations. POISONED ARROW KILLS. Wound Received from Arizona Indl and Never Healed. North Yakima, Wash., May 23. Af ter almost continuous Illness since ths middle of January Ralph K. Nichols, clerk of Yakjma county, died here Wednesday afternoon, aged 65 years. For two weeks Mr. Nichols' condition had been hopeless and he had suf fered greatly. Ills malady was caused, it is believ ed, by a wound made by a poisoned arrow received in a fight with some IndluiiB in Arizona, while a railroad surveyor. This wound never healed and was kept open by dally dressings. Last winter the poison of the wound got into Nichols' system and a gener al breakdown followed., Nichols was educated in Massachu setts and went to California in the early days. By turns he was surveyor, sheriff and attorney. He made and lost three fortunes and leaves suffi cient property for the needs of his sole surviving relative, a niece. In this country, to which he came 20 years ago. Nichols had held several offices with credit. He was a promi nent Mason and recently organized the local commandery of the Knights Templar.
