Water from the Snake river at Five Mile rapids, a short distance east of Pasco, hffs Just been turned Into the power canal of the Pasco Power and Water company and rotary pumps were started capable of handling; 26', 000,000 gallon of water per day, car-. tying It to 13,000 acres of desert land which are to be reclaimed .under the I'asco company's scheme,, says the WuIIa Walla Bulletin. Within a short time after the pumps were started at the power house of the company on the south bank of the Snake, the water was flowing down the main canal. There are In all about 36 miles of canals and laterals. Within a few days there will be a formal opening of the Pasco Power & Water company's irrigation scheme at the Junction of the Snake and Co lumbia rivers. This Is the first large pumping Irrigation enterprise to be completed In this state and Its loca tion in a district which cannot be Ir rigated by any other means makes It of unusual Importance. There are 13,000 'acres of land to be Irrigated In the Two Rivers dlHtrlct and much of this Is ulready taken up," said a Pasco man today, "It has been IoHltively demonstrated that the pump will lift the water from the Snake rlv cr to the canals, 85 feet above, with out the least difficulty, and maintain a steady supply of water. The daily ca- )!icly of these pumps Is greater than he water supply of the city of Seat tle." Will II. Parry, president of the company, Is arranging for the open ing celebration. A new town named Luther Burbank, the great botanist, will be the ultimate headquarters of the district. The plant Just complet ed Involves an Investment of approxl mately 3330,000. year round. A. L. Cauvel of this city Is at pres ent In San Franmlsco as a delegate from the local Ancient Order of For esters to the grand lodge, which Is In session there. Mr. Cauvel will return In about 10 days to Walla Walla. Mr. MacMartln, who formerly lived in California, la well acquainted with the cacia tree and knows It Is one of the best trees for both shade and or nament that Is possible to grow. He says he thinks the tree will grow in this country without any trouble, and could It become popular here to such an extent that it would be selected as the principal shade tree, he thinks the beauty of the city would be much Im proved. . The trees to be brought from Call fornla by Mr. Cauvel will be small, and will probably be started here in large tubs. After they have reached a stage when they can be set out in the open, they will be taken to the Masonic cemetery. The climate needed for the successful growth of the acacia tree Is one that Is even, sud den changes often being disastrous to it. It U thought the climate of this section of the country will be very suitable. To Introduce Carta Trees. In order to Introduce cacia trees In to the northwest, and especially Into Walla Walla, George MucMartln of this city, has secured the promise of A. L. Cauvel,.'now In California, to bring several of these trees' home with him on his return, says the Wal la Walla Bulletin. The acacia tree Is a native of California, and is one of the most popular trees In that state, owing to the fact that It Is green the Large Pumping Plant. There was an excursion yesterday from all points on the S. P. & S. rail way west of Patterson on that line to that station where the Patterson Land company Is operating the largest pumping plant in the world, it Is said. It wa to give the public an oppor tunity to see this pumping plant that the excursion was given yesterday, but the project was not well patronized, though It was advertised on the north side of the river, all along the route. The pumping plant Is said to be the largest in the world and Is run by gas oline, has two pumps, one with a ca pacity of 2000 gallons per minute, to an elevation of 260 feet, and the other having a capacity of 6000 gallons to an elevation of 75 feet. Two thousand acres can be reclaim ed by this plant. The land along the Columbia Is very fertile when once Is placed under Irrigation. Patterson. is about 87 miles from Granddalles, and 60 miles west Pasco, and is in Benton county. The Dalles Chronicle. . A very interesting story is related by Mr. W. L. Thompson of the Commercial National Bank as to his experience in reference to irrigated lands at Lewiston. His Bank had the handling of all the deeds, and, to use his own language "I found within the period of two years, men who had purchased 10 and 15 acre tracts at $100 per acre were disposing of the greater part of their holdings at $250 to $300. I watched this upward climb of prices and finally bought in a tract of land at $500 per acre, My- associates in the Bank later purchased at $750 per acre," Mr. Thompson has taken a tract of our land which, will be put in fruit this Fall. Prices now $100 per acre including water rights. Easy terms. . Echo Office, Opposite Depot COLUMBIA LAND COMPANY Portland Office, Marquam Bld'g. D. B. CONDEMN DISFRANCHISEMENT. Georgia Republican Would Re-Eleot RoosevcK. Macon. Ga.. May 13. Georgia Re publicans, both white and black, are gathering In Macon today for the state convention of the party, which will be held tomorrow and which will nominate a state ticket and elect four delejrates at large to Chicago. Although President Roosevelt has been Indorsed by the state committee and a movement has been set on foot to demand his nomination for a "sec ond elective term," it Is likely that the negroes will oppose any attempt to In struct the delegates for Taft. The Georgia disfranchisement act has been bitterly condemned by the state committee. Despite this, the ne gro wing of the party has Issued a call In which the committee is declared to be "dominated by federal office hold ers, henchmen and political trick sters," and to be "the most rotten and corrupt organization that has ever dis graced any state of this great union."
