METCALF DBS FLEET IMPRESSIVE EXHIBITION OF FIGHTING STRENGTH Gazed Upon by Hundredo of Thou sancln from Surrounding llflli- "Fighting Dob's" Official Career Clones Today Rear Admiral TlMjmag Takes Command Admlr. alH' Banquet ot 120 Per. San Francisco, May 8. While hun dreds of thousands of people gazed upon the spectacle from every point of vantage along the water front, Secretary of the Navy Metcalf today reviewed the combined Atlantic and Pacific fleets In San Francisco Bay. The review was by all odds the most Impresslbe exhibition of the strength and power of the American navy ever witnessed and It was small wonder that .the eyes of the naval secretary, the executive director of the great sea-fighting machine, glistened with pride and that his fellow Californlans expressed their approbation In deaf ening cheers. Spick and span, with gleaming paint and shining brass, with every man at his post of duty, the vessels of war passed before Sec retary Metcalf and boomed forth a thunderous salute In his honor. A Cotflly Food. This evening Secretary Metcalf and the admirals of the fleet will be the guests of honor at the Sun Francisco banquet at the St. Francis, which promises to be the greatest function of its kind ever held on the coast. There will be more than 600 at the dinner, which will cost $20 per plate. While the officers are dining, the sail ors will continue their athletic carni val in the naval pavilion tonight. Today's review Is doubly memor able as marking, the official close .of the naval career of Rear Admiral "Fighting Bob" Evans. Although Evans will not reach the statutory age for retirement 62 years until August 18, the condition of his health forbids further activity. Rear Ad miral Thomas will be in command of the fleet during Its stay on the coast, but to Rear Admiral Sperry will be given in honor of taking the. "big sixteen" back to the Atlantic coast by circling the globe. The Pacific fleet, which took part In today's review, wll Isalj tomorrow for the south to carry out a program of drills, maneuvers and exercises. Oakland Day. Tomorrow will be Oakland day, when the festivities Incident to the visit of the fleet will be temporarily transferred to that city. On Sunday there will be special services In all the churches and In the naval pa vilion. In addition to a grand ball for the enlisted men on Tuesday night, dally athletic meets and other amusements, a number of trips are scheduled for next week. The program of the sightseeing committe Is an extensive one and Includes the following events: Monday, May 11. Automobile run through the city for Secretary Met- j calf, distinguished visitors and offi cers of the fleet. Observation car rides for 1000 enlisted men, starting from Ferry building at 8:30 a. ni., 11 a. m., 1:30 p. m., and 4 p. m. Tuesday, May 12. Trip to Mount Tamulpais and Muir woods, with luncheon at Mount Tamalpals, for 200 officers of the fleet. Car rides for 1000 enlinted men as on Monday. Trip to San Jose for BOO officers of the fleet, with grand ball In the eve ning. Thursday. May 4. Berkeley day. Friday, May 15. Santa Rosa day. Excursion to Santa Rosa for 25 offi cers and 1 1 5 men. Second trlD to Mount Tamalpals and Muir woods for 200 officers. RIG ROWING EVENTS. Middles Will Open Senn With Co- Innthla. New York, May 8. Two Important rowing events, the first of the present season, will be decided tomorrow, when the crews of Columbia and An napolis will row a match race over the Severn river course and New York University and Georgetown Univer sity will meet on the Potomac. Columbia has developed a fust crew and the crack oarsmen who will represent the big Mornlngslde Insti tution will give the middles a run for their money. Much Interest is manifested In the race between the New York univer sity and Georgetown eight-oared crews, which will be held on tho straightaway course on tho Potomac. The distance Is one mile and ' 550 yards. Georgetown has maintained a crew for a number of years, and the south ern university has been a factor In all the Intercollegiate regattas. New York University Is - a newcomer In rowing circles and has never entered one of the big regattas. Despite this apparent disadvantage the Violet seems to have an excellent chance to win from Georgetown. To Hold Olympic Trials. San Francisco, May 8. Pacific coast try-outs for the Olympic team to London will be held on the oval at Stanford University tomorrow. In ac cordance with the plans decided upon by the board of governors of the Pa cific Athletic association. The Stan ford track was chosen on the coast and its construction along standard lines, and the many athletes will nave an opportunity to show at their best In an effort to win a place on the American team that will go to Lon don this summer. County Engineer Mclntyre has made a plan showing a new system of roads on the Yakima reservation and when a map has been drafted it will be sub mitted to the department of the In terior for approval, says the Yakima Republic. The plan provides for 386 miles of roads along section lines and covering practically all of the territory cf the reservation which Is, or eventu ally will be Irrigated. At present the roads on the reser vation are but 30 feet wide and the county authorities are anxious that the roads be widened out so as to conform with the other roads of the county which are 60 feet In width and which are laid out on section ' lines. It Is considered that the change should be made prior to the opening of the res ervation, which is expected next spring. If not, the change Is likely to Involve troublesome and expensive condemnation proceedings against white settlers who may purchase hold ings and who would resent having to give up strips of their land for road purposes. The plan outlined by the county en gineer meets with the approval of Superintendent Jay Lynch, of the res ervation, and he will recommend Its adoption by the department. 100 Reward. $100.
