Ing Had Large Quantity of Coal Stored There Origin of Blaae a Mystery Discovered Soon After 10 O'clock Last Night Lack of Wind Prevents Serious Conflagration. By a fire that broke out shortly after 10 o"elock last night the old Lemp brewery building at the corner of Alta and Vincent streets was de stroyed with a large quantity of coal stored therein. The building was tho property of W. S. Byers, while the coal belonged to W. C. Mlnnls. The loss will be covered by Insur ance. How the fire In the old brewery started Is a mystery and It may have been the work of an Incendiary though the general supposition Is that it was lighted by the careless dropping of a lighted match by some one passing or by a hobo. Within a few moments after the fire was discovered the building was a mars of flames and the sky Illumi nated for many blocks around. The alarm was first given by Ben Bur roughs and Royal Sawtclle and east end and central companies were call ed out the east enders arriving first. They responded gulckly ?,nJ by torli fng several streams on the burning warehouse quenched the blase be fore It could spread to any of the ad joining property. However, the old building was so badly damaged that it Is rendered worthless. Owing to the location of the fire It was feared for a time that a serious confragratlon might ensue. The Oregon lumber yard Is located Just across the street to the west, while the Byers warehouses and mill were right adjoining the fire. Had a strong wind been blowing at the time the flames would have been dlflcult to control. In early days the structure was used as a brewery store room but for many years has been utilized aa a ware house. For a time It was rented by the Oregon lumber yard, but that concern has not used It for two years. At the time of the fire It contained coal belonging to W. C. Mystery of Athena Burglary Id Quick ly Solved Halfbreed Implicates Wlilte Man. Albert Murray, a half-breed, Her man Hadky, a traveling musician, and Andrew Plcard. are all under arrest at Athena charged with robbing the Corner saloon, owned by Thomas Bros., Tuesday night, and Murray has turned state's evidence. Tuesday night the Thomas Bros.' saloon was entered by robbers who removed a basement window, and go ing through the basement entered the saloon through a trap door. From the saloon till they took a sack con taining $10 In money. After the robbery suspicion fell upon Murray, who had gone to Ad ams. One of the Thomas brothers fcund him at Adams and induced him to go back to Athena, where he was arrested by Marshal Ghoulson. He made a confession involving Plcard and Hadky, laying the greater blame for the crime upon the musician. Hadky was arrested at Weston where he had gone after the robbery. District Attorney Phelps went to Athena this afternoon to take up the Jhree cases n the justice court, Central Committee Meets Tonight. The republican central committee of the county will meet Oils evening at 7 o'clock at the republican head quarters in the Association building, for the purpose of selecting delegates to the state convention, which meets In Portland on May 14. A one-fiire rate of $1.15 for the round trip from Peridleton to Her mlston will be charged by the O. R. & N. for the excursion to be run from this city on May 27, for the opening of the government Irrigation project at Hermiston. Agent F. J. Qulnlan today receiv ed the rate from General Passenger Agent William McMurray and from now until the date of the excursion the event will be thoroughly adver tised. Sufficient cars to accommodate any sized crowd which may go from this city will be furnished by the company and the people of Hermiston 'will ar range to take care of as many as possible so the excursion promises to te one of the most pleasant and suc cessful events of the season. It had been hoped by the people of Hermlton to' have Governor Cham berlain address the excursionists on that day, but owing to his political campaign the governor has Informed them that It will be doubtful if ho can make a date for Hermiston on May 27. He has arranged his Itin erary for the state and It will be dif ficult to change a date. However, he will be present If possible. Messenger Murdered. Denver, Col., May 7. Charles H. Wright, express messenger on the Denver & Rio Grande, was murdered some time last night In his car. The murderers secured about $100. The body was found this morning when the train pulled In. There is no clue. SHAW WILL NOT RUN. Independent Legislative Candidate Clianges Mind on Subject. W. T. Shaw has changed his mind regarding his candidacy for represen tative from this county and last eve ning announced that he will not make the race against L. L. Mann, the re publican nominee, who subscribed to statemet No. 2. A petition for Mr. Shaw's nomination as an independent was being circulated, but tne proposi tion will not be dropped.. According to Will M. Peterson an other candidate will be brought for ward for the legislative position but the matter was not ready tor an nouncement today. In nast years thousands of small fish have perished In the numerous Ir rigation ditches along the creek. It Is honed that this will be avoided in the future, and to this end Mr. Mar den requests all farmers who take wa ter from Eight Mile to place screens at the intake of their ditches. Since the camp meeting commenced numerous meetings of the Indian tem perance society have been held and many new members enrolled. Last night a session was held lasting until 1 o'clock In the morning Not only are the Indians' urged to abstain from the use of Intoxicants, but those In charge are working to help out the movement for making the city and county dry. In the past the'rlght of franchise has bepn used to some extent by the Indians and Indications point to a much stronger redman vote than usual this year. Yesterday afternoon Jas, O'Leary, an engineer on the switch engine, was t the O. R. & N. pump house when he saw the body of a man floating in the river, says The Dalles Chron icle. The'coronor was notified and he sent two men out with a boat, but the body could not be overtaken. It was that of a man having black whiskers, black hair and wearing a dark shirt and trousers, and a wide white belt. The body will no doubt be picked up at some down river point.
