During the run of 60 consecutive performances In San Francisco this spring 279,873 persons paid admission to see the big show, a record that has never been equalled by a circus In the history of the west. The McDonald family created a most favorable Impression, notwith standing that artists of world-wide reputation were on the program ahead of them. That they are mastera of their art cannot be disputed. There are eight people In the troupe. Militia Will SK'ud Saturday Night and Sunday In Camp on Oliver Farm West of Tow n Will Get Needed In struct Ion Plans Being Made for Memorial Day Observance Lieu tenant Smytlie In Command. Some time during the month of May company L will go Into camp at the Oliver place below the city and will repeat the experience It had a yea ago at the same place. The company will go Into camp on a Saturday even Ing-and will return home Sunday evening. The "Bean" creek camping ground on the Oliver place furnishes an Ideal place for the company to bivouac and the shelter tents will be used. During the night the members of the company will be Instructed In guard duty and Sunday will be devot ed to extended order drill, outpost work and other things In which the company will need Instruction before It goes to American lake. The afternoon wilt probably be de voted to a bloodless campaign between the two platoons of the, company. Members of the company are anx lous for the outing and last night they voted to have the same at some time during the month, the date to be an uounced later by the commanding of fleer. There are now a number of new men In the company and the en campment will furnish good training for them especially. For Memorial Dny. Plans for the observance of Me morial day were also discussed to some extent last night and the officers of the company were Instructed to lend the members of the G. A. R. any as- ristnnre possible In the arrangements for that day. The company itself will pnrtkipntc In the services and the members are anxious to assist In hav lug the day more generally observed than In the past. Smythe hi Command. Though the resignation of Captain Kern has not yet been ncted upon, he bus relinquished active control of the company and the company Is under the command of First Lieutenant Smythe, the next ranking officer, and who Is now In line for the captaincy. Working for Eastern Trip. Miss Beulah E. Barker of Echo, Is n the city soliciting subscriptions for the Pacific Northwest of Portland, In a contest for a trip to the east which s to be given away by that publica tion. , Miss Barker is Umatilla coun ty's only candidate and Is making an excellent showing. It Is hoped that she wins the contest and Is enabled to go east with the large party to be sent from Oregon. The girls who go upon this trip will scatter literature about Oregon all through the eastern states. The object of the Pacific W! L. Durr of Weston, Is a business visitor today. Lowell Rogers of Adams, Is In the city today on a business trip. Dr. J. A. Donahue went to Weston this morning upon professional busi ness. Mrs. James B. Welch of Portland Is now in the city upon a visit with friends. Attorney S. F. Wilson came down from Athena this morning on a brief business trip. Henry Barrett of Athena, Is In the city today on a short business trip, having driven down. Attorney C. T. Godwin returned to Milton last evening after a brief bus iness visit In the city. Miss Effle Jean Frazier returned last evening from a few days' visit with friends at Hermlston and Echo. Col. J. H. Raley is Just recovering from a slight Illness and was on the treet today for the first time In sev eral days. Mrs. Anna Selkirk Norton went to Walla Walla last evening, where she will remain for a short time giving lessons in voice. Attorney C. E. Cranston and family and Miss Veva Boothby went down to Barnhart today to visit the J. E. Smith shearing pens while the shearing plant is In operation. Miss Lola Myers, the well known trained nurse who has made her home In this city for the past two years, left this morning for Portland, where she will spend the summer,. Fred Crawford and daughter, Del ta, arrived In the city last night from Fresno, Cal., after an absence of a year. Mrs. Crawford, who is now vis iting in Portland, will arrive In a few days. Bishop a J. O'Reilly of the eastern Oregon Catholic diocese, .remained over night for a visit with Father Neate of St. Mary's church and St. Joseph's academy on his return from Portland.
