Freewater, May 5. Another bank
will be opened In Freewater In a short
time, which will make two good
banks for the town. The incorpora
tors are A. S. Pearson, D. C. Sander
son and R. H. Wellman, and the-cap
ital stock will be $10,000.
Rev. Stewart was a recent visitor
here from Echo. He likes his work
at Echo very much, and Is much in
terested In Umatilla county general

George Milner has the honor of
having killed a bear and capturing
the cubs. He has the cubs In his pos
session and has been offered over
one hundred dollars for them, which
he refused. He made the catch while
In the Blue mountains a few days
ago.
People of this section are much In
terested In the coming of the demon
stration train which will be here May
14. The lecture will take place from
9 to 10 o'clock on the morning of
that date, on the following subjects:
Livestock, rotation of crops, conserv
ation of moisture, fruitgrowing meth.
ods and chemistry of the soil.
Many of the people of Milton and
Freewater went over to Meador park
Sunday to spend the day, and the
dance was attended on Saturday

Athena, May 5. Athena's first
market day was held Saturday, and
proved a general success. All that
as listed was sold at good prices, in
cluding horses, stock, farm Imple
ments, etc-. A large amount of flour.
0 barrels in all, was sold by the
Preston-Parton Milling company at
reduced rates, and wagonload after
wagonload was hauled out In the
country by the farmers. Another
market day will be held In the near
future.

reunion this year will be one of the

Hugh Walker, who has been in the
hospital in Walla Walla, has becj

The Weston Normal team has been
receiving congratulations on account
of their success In two excellent
games with Pearson's academy at
Walla Walla. The boys expect to win
number of games in the next few
weeks, and are doing much practice
work.

ton returned home after spending a
few days here. A number of young
people were baptised while Rev.
Qulnney was here.

successful affair.

Lewinton Greets Portland.
Witn bands playing, bells ringing,
whistles shrieking and 3000 people
cheering, the special train of the O
R.. & N. company bearing the Port
land excursionists reached the citv
esterday morning, says the Lewlston
Teller.
The approach of the train two miles
below the city was heralded by the
heerlng of the hundreds who had
gathered on the banks of the Clear
ater river to wltnes the crossing of
the train over the new bridge. The
arrival of the train at the north ap
proach was the occasion for a second
demonstration, and the crossing of
the river was celebrated by cheering
and waving of hats and handker
chiefs.
The welcoming hand was extended
to the visitors as they alighted from
the train and the' appreciation of the
Portland people Is best expressed by
the remark made at the Commercial
club rooms when the speaker said
"It Is the most cordial greeting that
has ever been extended to a Portland
delegation."

Wallowa's First Milking Ma-Nne
Thomas Morgan says the milking
machine recently installed on his
Prairie creek ranch is a success, and
he is well satisfied with his invest
ment, says the Enterprise News-Rec
ord. The milker and all its acces
sories, engine, etc., form quite a com
plicated machine. No expert was sent
to set It up, Mr. Morgan depending on
the assistance of Mr. Hamilton of
Joseph. No one who had ever seen
a milker was there to teach Its oper
ation, yet when the machine was first
tried It worked like a charm, and it
hasn't balked once since the start.
After a few days use Mr. Morgan
with the assfstance of his wife a part
of the time, milked 28 cows In an
hour and a half. When a herd be
comes well broken, one person' can
easily attend to over 100 cows. "
It Is useless to attempt descrlo-
tlon of the apparatus In all its parts.
It must be seen to be really under
stood. The suction atachment. for
teats and the pulsating throb of the
milker, so like the natural sucking
by a calf, are the chief points that

Morgan says he had a letter from Dr.
