The Commercial club of Walla Walla, has passed resolutions urging the railroad companies to grant a one fare rae for the round trip, by con tinuous passage, between points In In terior Washington and Oregon and the seaside resorts of these two states. It Is understood' that the club also favors a higher rate when stopover privileges are allowed. The Walla Walla club has request ed the commercial bodies of eastern Oregon, Washington and Idaho, as well as the Commercial club of Port land, to pass similar resolutions. It Is hoped that favorable action may be taken by all, as the people of the In terior should be given the opportu nity of visiting the coast, especially during the summer months, at the least possible cost. linker a Lumber Center. The Sumpter Valley railroad, com prising a length of 67 miles between Baker City and Austin, Ore., runs through the Sumpter mining belt and Is soon to double Its mileage. Today 93 per cent of the freight of this road comes from timber, though It Is not generally known that Baker City is a lumber center. New Club Soon to Be Ready. It will be the 15th of May before the new. eight-story steel building of ; the Portland Commercial club will be ready for occupancy. The club will formally open Its new quarters on June 12, the anniversary of the laying of Its cornerstone. The cost of the building and its' furnishing has been $434,000. Good Horse Sale. Last week witnessed the most sue cessful sale of horses ever held In Portland. Breeders and buyer's from Washington, Oregon, Montana, Idaho, California and British Columbia were there, with a liberal sprinkling of eastern owners. A correspondent at Sumpter says that without doubt "Olive mite, a beautiful sheet of water near this olace has earned the distinction of helm the greatest trout habitation In Oregon, says a Baker City Item. Thousands of fish are caught there (arh season by fishermen rrom an parts of the state, yet each season hows a larger increase of the rinny tribe. So numerous are the trout that the ordinary angler will be kept busy rawing them from the water with the only Intermission the time that e spends taking the fish from the ook and rebating It. Already some' of Sumpter's hardy inhabitants are preparing to break the deep snow that lies on the high lands surrounding the lake so that they may be the first to make the phenomenal catch that rewards the early angler. Over ten thousand trout weer caught in this lake last year by Sumpter residents alone and still there is not the slightest sign of any dlmlnuation in the number of fish there. Downey ' lake, a smaller body of ater than Olve lake Is to be stocked this spring with trout from the hatch ery at Ontario. Baldy lake, situated near the summit of Bald mountain has also a, large number of trout, but nglers are not so succesful there as t Olive lake, as the fish will only bite under certain climatic con ditions. This Is considered strange, as no- here else in the Blue mountains do the fish show this peculiarity. Chemawa Indians again defeated their white brothers in a 60-mlIe re lay race from Salem to' Portland, when Amos Smoker, a full blood from California, bore the message from Governor Chamberlain through a cheering throng along Fourth street and handed It to Mayor Harry Lane, In front of the Y. M. C. A. building at UV minutes after 2 o'clock Sat urday afternoon, says a Portland pa per. The runners left the state capl toi at 9 a. m., and covered the dis tance In five hours, 1$- minutes, clipping 9 minutes off their record of last year. Mayor Lane read the message to the assembled throng as follows: "Mayor Harry Lane Dear Sir. Relay teams, consisting of young men from the Portland Y. M. C. A., the Salem Y. M. C A. and the Indian training school at Chemawa, leave the capltol building at Salem at 9 a. m. I place this message In the hands of the representatives of the Indian training school at Chemawa, extending Notice.
