The local fans beat the academy last Saturday at this place by a score of three to two, , It was a good game, full of ginger and Interesting;. The game today is being attended by a number of Weston I tes. To Elect TeactHTS. Next Saturday, May 9, the directors of Weston school district will meet to elect teachers for the next school term. T. M. Bowman Is not a can didate for reelection as principal. Miss Eva L. Wood, who has charge of the primary' department, is an other teacher who will not apply for reelection. ' The annual banquet of the Women's Club of Weston will be held this eve ning at the home of Mrs. Robert "C. French. This will be one of the most brilliant social functions of the year. The "Old Maids' Convention" woe ; given at tho Normal chapel last eve ning by a number of the Normal students. The people of Hermlston are tak ing a great deal of Interest In the celebration of the opening of the government project, which will take place May 22. An elaborate program Is being prepared, and people will be here from all directions for this oc casion. M. Dlshon, who has just erected one of the most up to date, modern livery barns to be found anywhere In the west at Hermlston, has some fine horses and turnouts for use. A number of new cottages are be ing constructed In different parts of the town at thin time, the houses are In great demand for rent. It Is Im possible for the hotels to accommo date all Incoming people, and rooms are being secured wherever possible. Potatoes, alfalfa, strawberries and other, fruits, etc., are doing fine at this time, and there will be a good showing. It Is reported that Messrs. Morgan and Johnson have 70 acres of fine American potatoes up and looking fine, also a fine bed of onions. They expect to ship garden truck for early murket. Sheep shearing has commenced In the vicinity of Ellensburg, Wash., and -will last during 'the month of May. Between 40,000 and 60,000 sheep 'Will be sheared In this county this season. Wa ter Is now flowing through the ditch es In the Hermlston unit of the Uma tilla project, and the results of Irri gation are being shown to good advantage. The work at the dam of the Uma tilla project has been going on In about the way that had been plan ned. Engineers report that the em bankment of the big structure will be complete early In June, soon after which all construction material and many of the men employed will be moved elsewhere. The engineer will probably be here for some weeks to come. The water gauge of the gate tower on the project shows a depth of wa ter over the outlet of about 20 feet, and there Is sufficient water stored to cover all the land that will be irri gated this season, from two to three feet deep. The ditch will be lined with con crete In various places along the feed canal toward Echo to avoid a repe tition of seepage which has caused some trouble, which Is always ex perienced to some extent In building new ditches. Engineers report com paratively little trouble eo far, and consider the worst over. Owing to the fact that there Is so much new land being cleared and the people be ing Inexperienced with Irrigation, some trouble will be caused for the first year or two. It Is expected, however, that water will flow with out any further Interuptlon. Construction work on the distribu tion system will be rushed. There are altogether, about 7 miles of re-ln-forced concrete pressure pipes to con struct, besides other small stretches where concrete pipe Is used, Includ Ing 30, 16 and 12-inch pipe line. Many Visitors. A number of people are expected here tomorrow and each succeeding Sunday during the summer to take advantage of .excursion rates to vlw what Is being done In this section of the country. The city of Hermwton has arranged with the government for- the use of water from the Umatilla project for the use of Irrlgntlon In the city lim its. A continuous flow will be glven for $3.60 per acre per year, plus $1 I for maintenance fee. This will give all Hermlston citizens an equal right to the water. Central Installed. W. W. Pankney, manager of the Eastern Oregon Telephone company, was here from Echo yesterday, and he stated that the central had been Installed and will be In good working order within a few days as soon as all lines can ne propeny conneciea. I Hermlston will have over 100 phones put In. New Bank Building. F. B. Swayze of the First Bank of Hermlston states that he Is making arrangements to move Into a brick building on Main street within a very short time. He expects to build a new bank building In the fall, which will be a large brick structure. Alfalfa Is two and one half feet high In the vicinity of Hermlston, and Is n dark green, healthy color. The first cutting will be made In about 10 days, and there will be an excel lent crop this year. C. A. Crandall and family of Illi nois, have arrived here to locate per manently and have moved Into their new home. Engineers McCullough and Morri son, who are In the service of the gov ernment have Just been here from Sunnyslde, Wash., looking over the Umatilla project, and they spoke In high terms of the prospects here. The Freewater Cannery, which was operated here for the first time last year, will open for the season In about a week, when as paragus will be canned to begin with. Hansen of Femdale, died Wednesday In the hospital at Walla Walla, after an operation, which was her only hope for relief. She had been 111 for months. A number of the people In this sec tion of the county expect to take ad vantage of the excursion to Pendleton Sunday, which will be run from Walla Walla for the ball game. Wyman, a young woman, 20 years of age, and a native of Oregon City, died under peculiar circumstances.
