Fletcher, the pioneer band master and musician of this city, who spent a portion of last season In the beautiful lake district of northern Idaho, has written the following ex cellent descriptive sketch 'of that country for the East Oregonlan: Lake Chatcolet is one of the many lakes in the Coeur d'Alene moun tains. It is In Idaho, 22 miles from Tekoa on a branch of the O. R. & N. running from Tekoa to Burke. Its altitude is 2100 feet above sea level and Is noted for Its abundance of fish and game, and also as a great summer resort. It Is a fresh, clear body of water about three miles long and one mile wide, surrounded by mountains on three sides and the beautiful St. Joe river on one side. People go there from all parts of the country for a summer outing and you can see tenting parties In every direction, particularly on the banks of the St. Joe river and from Its mouth to Coeur d'Alene City, a distance of about 35 miles, the banks of Lake Coeur d'Alene. There Is no lack of small boats for hire. One evening I counted 40 at the boat house and they were not all in. These can be rented by the day or month at a reasonable figure. There are three kinds of fish In the lake which are the most numer ous black bass, trout and perch. 'Tis but a few years ago that there were no fish In the lake but trout which is the native fish. Bass were planted In a lake adjoin ing (Hayden lake) which overflowed, carrying the bass Into lake Chatcolet The bass Immediately commenced war on the trout and so successful have they been that now you will catch SO bass to one trout. The bass are of a canaballstlc nature, eating all the trout spawn and small trout they can find so It will not be long before the bass will have full possession of the lake. There are. many ways of catch ing these fish.' The old fashioned hook and line without any kind of a pole or bait; trolling with a spoon or sptnnig minnow, they will raise to a fly. A good many fishermen use what Is called a buck tall, which Is made to represent a large fly with a black body and long wings made of hair. I had greater success with a spin ning minnow than any other way. This device Is made to represent a minnow about three Inches long and covered with hooks (mine had 15) with a fan shaped ring at the head and tail which revolve as you pull it through the water. You fasten this to a line about 50 feet long, then throw It out In the lake the full length of the line. This is done by taking hold of the line about six feet from the minnow and swinging It around your head until you get the Impetus. Then pull the minnow In to shore, hand over hand. In this way I have caught a great many bass, some of them weighing three and one-half pounds, and l tell you when you get one on your hook that weighs that much you will think you have got something. One day I saw an old fisherman trolling with a field mouse and fish ing with a buck tail at the same time. He told me that there were times when the bass preferred the mouse to anything. The bass are good eat ing, some say its good as trout They are good, but I prefer trout. There are times of the year when the lake Is covered with ducks, geese and other game. There are a few ducks there the year around and mud hens by the hundreds. I think I am safe In saying I have seen a thousand mud hens In one flock. I made the remark one day to a gentleman who had lived about the lake for years 'that I had seen mud hens In many parts .of America, but never saw more than two or three together at a trme. and they were not considered good to eat or for any thing else." He replied that mud hens are good eating and told me how to pre pare and cook them, so tho next time we went gunning we brought home 12 mud hens besides some ducks. Fry or stew as you would a duck." The meat when cooked resembles that of a Jacksnlpe both in taste and ap pearance. We thought It good and were sorry we gave any away. St. Joe river heads In the Idaho mountains, is fed by numerous streams, the clear water being one of the largest and empties into Coeur d'Alene lake. It Is navigable for about 30 miles, runs through a large part of the Nez Perce reservation. Steamboats run every day from Coeur d'Alene City to St. Marie, a point on the river 18 miles from its mouth. Smaller steamers go up past St. Marie to the head of navigation. The St. Joe Is a beautiful, clear stream, very deep. Some say It has no bottom, but I guess it has, though a 60-foot line does not reach it In places. The largest steamers running fqom Coeur d'Alene City up this river are the Georgle Oakes and the Idaho,, each capable of carrying about 500 people. There are many smaller steamboats which ply from Cpeur d'Alene City on the river.. Lumber, timber, dairy products, stock and mining are the principal businesses on the river. There are a number of towns on the O. Ft. & N. branch Harrison, Burke, Mullen, Wardner and Wallace. Wallace is one of the most up to date mountain towns I ever saw. It Is the county seat of Shoshone county. It Is 80 miles from Tekoa. It altitude is 2745 feet above sea level has a population of about 6000,; has a paid fire department, etc., electric lights, paved streets, . fine buildings and a system of gravity water works with a pressure sufficient to throw water wherever required. It Is situated in a great mining sec tion, about the center of the greatest silver and lead belt In the world. The mills for reducing the ore from this belt are not surpassed by any, not ex cepting the great mills In Australia and South Africa. These latter may have greater capacity, but In point of machinery and facilities for taking the metal from the ore there Is no better made. Later on I will tell you how the ore Is mined and con veyed to the mill, and the process 11 goes through to obtain the metal. ( SKTTLF.R S HOME . With their home blown to atoms by the ex plosion of a. large quantity of dyna mite, themselves cut In many places and badly stunned by the shock, and their hired man blown many feet from the house by the powder and badly injured, E. A. Carlson and wife have reached Kingston, eight miles below Wardner, after a hard Journey down the river. They relate a harrowing story of their nearness to death at the hands of would-be assassins. The Carlsons reside on a ranch up the North Fork river and had Just completed a large new house on their ranch. Last eve ning. Just after retiring, a terrible ex plosion of dynamite took place, com pletely demolishing the house and fur niture, and throwing the Inmates many feet through the air, injuring and stunning them. The hired man was found 50 feet from the house In a dazen condition. Ail the animals In the barn north of the house were klied or Injured and the barn torn down. Just who set the blast off has not been learned as yet, though officials are at work on the case and expect to capture the parties soon. It Is stated that some Finns living in the woods near by have been making threats against settlers, and the work of dy namiting is laid at their door. Great excitement Is felt all along he river by the many settlers.
