Will Have Larger Columbia Money Biting Raised for the Purpose of Putting Up New Building DclegiMes Ap pointed to Grand Lodge. Milton, May 1, The Bank of Mil ton, which was Incorporated in 1889 as a private bank, has applied to the comptroller of the treasury at Wash' lngton for a charter and will soon be converted into a national bank, to be known as the First .National Bank of Milton, with a capital of $50,000. The bank's business for the year closing March 31 shows an average Increase over the previous year of 25 per cent. The total resources of the bank are $410,000, of which $170,000 Is cash on hand and sight exchange. The net surplus and undivided profits for the pnst year were $25,000, an Increase of $5400 over the previous year. This section of the country Is growing so rapidly, that all businesses are being Improved in proportion. The executive board of the Colum bia college, the South Methodist col lege at this place, has secured an op tion on 20 acres of excellent .land Just west of the present site of the college, and within less than two blocks of the electric car line, which will be as declared by all the business men the proper location for a new school building, and a greater "Columbia." In order to raise the $50,000 now proposed by the board of education, It will be necessary for the citizens of Milton to give at least $12,500. of which $5000 has already been pledged by four Individuals. The college has many friends In the neighboring states, and It is thought that the bal ance of the money can be easily rais ed. A committee Is now engaged In raising the funds. Freewater Notes. Mitchell as delegates to the grand lodge, which meets in Salem In May. Mrs. M. E. Andrews of Spokane, Is visiting with his brother, Jesse Bas ket, the postmaster. Petitions are being circulated In Milton and Freewater asking the Pa cific Coast Elevator company to re move the old warehouse Irom near the depot, and they will forward It to the main office In Portland. The building has not been In use for years, and as It Is an old frame struc ture it is considered a fire trap. In case the company does not remove It, tne council will probably condemn It Debate Cuban Question. New Haven, Conn., May 1. Yale and Harvard orators will meet In their annual debate this evenlne. For the second annual New York work horse parade to be held on Memorial Day, entries close today, and competition for all prizes will be limited to horses named before midnight tonight. Weston, May 1. The Weston mountain farmers are engaged In hauling potatoes to Athena from where they will be shipped over the Northern Pacific to Seattle. More than 40 carloads have been contract ed for from this district. President Robert C. French of the Normal, will go to Pullman, Wash., as 'one of the judges in the Inter scholastic debate, where delegates from the agricultural colleges of Washington, Idaho and Oregon will be in attendance. All Saints rectory at this place is being newly painted, and generally Improved., Ira E. Hopkins has been very 111 fur some days, and all relatives have been' sent for. A number from here went over to Walla Walla the first of the week to attend the funeral of Mrs. Elliott, who was a former resident of this place. Rev. P. S. Rogers has been a vis itor In Pendleton this week on busi ness. The wheat Is looking very good and It Is thought that the outlook is es pecially fine this season. Mrs. P. T.
