Thn Southern Pacific will com mence building he first 23 miles of the line from Mojave to a connection with the Nevada and California rail way In the Owens river valley next week. The entire length is about 123 miles and Is to be completed In 60 .lav biivs the Mt. Whitney, Cal., Sen tinel. The road will be broad gauge and In order to make a through line from Molave to Hazen the road from Keeler to Tpnopah Junction will have to be standardised a distance oi idi miles. The primary purpose of this iin is to make oosslble the construc tion of the Los Angeles aqueduct In the end, however, witn me broad itaualna of the Nevada and California below Tonopah Junction It will form another through route from southern California to the east via tha Southern Pacific. From Tono nan lunctlon to Hazen the line Is already broad gauge. This new line will also be the short line to xonopan and Ooldfleld and also to Reno and Nevada main line points from the southern part of the state. The new iin Dasses within 18 miles of Jo hannesburg, through Darwin and a number of promising mining camps. The scenery between Owens lake and Bishop, near the Nevada state line, It said to be unrivaled for grandeur. The Owens vallev is 3000 feet above s'ea level, and the Mount Whitney range with at least 20 peaks In view, ap proximating 14,000 feet in neigni rises abruptly to the west. The Increase In altitude In a hori zontal distance of five miles is near ly 11.000 feet. This is the most sheer and highest mountain wall in the country, and Is surmounted by the highest peak In the United states proper. NO POOR HOI SE FOR MARY. Aged Indian Woman Refuses to Leave Her Cabin. . Indian Mary, the last member of the famous trlble.of Rogue River In dians, wnich was once supreme in the southern Oregon country, who has been a city and county charge for several years, is making much trou ble fur the city officers and council says an item from Grants Pass. In dian Mary lives In a little house on Pine street that was built by 'the county, but now that Josephine has a large county home the court has or dered that she leave her cabin and move to the big house on the hill, taking her five-year-old papoose with her. Hut Indian Mary, true to' her Rogue River blood, refuses to go. She is satisfied with her cabin, and no amount of persuasion on the part oi the county court or city council can drive her out. She says she "no will go to chuck-chuck house." Because of the filthy ' condition of her cabin, and of the frequent dis-1 turbnnces at her place, the neighbors arc complaining, and have presented a remonstrance to the city and to the county court asking her removal, either to the poor farm or to the res ervation. Indian Mary has a grown daughter, who Is a, Chemawa student. The county court has shut off Its supply of food and raiment for the old lady, but she gets ample assist ance from the Salvation Army and other charitable Institutions. As Indian Mary refuses to go and can be removed from her cabin In no other way, the mayor has ordered the police to take her off by force. Ae Indian Mary comes of a race that de lights in warfare, it Is quite evident that there will be considerable ex citement around her cabin when the officers appear to enforce the may or's order. Oliver has returned to Seattle from a four-year- prospecting tour of the Great Slave lake country and declares he has dis covered placer gold mines that are richer than those of either Klondike or Nome. CARNIVAL (clayblrd shooting at the Uxendon school), rowing at Henley on the 28th, yacht racing at Ryde on the 27th, while there will be motor boat racing In Southampton Water on July 11. The winter pastimes commence about October 19, Rugby and Asso ciation football hockey, and lacrosse being Included In the Shepherd's Bush program, while the figure skat ing will take place on the Prince's Rink. Altogether the great amateur ef forts seems likely to be carried out, and Lord Desborough, the, president, and the members of the British Olym pic association are being congratulat ed on the successful accomplishment of the enormous amount of prelimi nary work necessary to put forward a program In which the Interests are so varied. Even English amateur association footballers have an opportunity to patch up their differences before the Olympic games commence, as their matches are not due until October. A report from Gransrevllle, Idaho, says the county court has refused to grant a transfer of liquor llcenre or refund the money to the saloonmen who were recently ousted from the Nez Perce Indian reservation by a supreme court decision. Henry Francis was shot and se riously wounded by his brother In a quarrel over the possession of a ranch near Lewlston on which they were living. The wounded man was on his honeymoon.
