The Pastime had a clever change of motion pictures yesterday, beauti ful, realistic, and many of them very laughnble. The Illustrated song was also new and attractive. Fish, of The Dalles, and for mer proprietor of the Umatilla House of that city, has leased th Bowmn hotel and will take charge of the same on the first of May. When he takes charge of the hos telry the new landlord will move the hotel office Into tne room on th lower floor now occupied by the res taurant and he will make other ex tensive changes about the place. The third floor of the building to De finished up and furnished for use, thereby making the hotel capable of handling nearly double the presen business. During the years he conducted the Umatilla house Mr. Fish earned a wide reputation as a hotelkeeper and with the fine building he will have here, mere is little doubt but that he will make the Bowman Into one of the leading hotels of the city. A cor respondent writing from that city to the Portland Oregonlan, says: When the will of the late Hermln- glle -Bernler, who died last week, at the age of 76, was filed In the supe rior court for probate, a romance of 50 years was ended and the devotion of the dead man to his lost love was shown to be true to death. The terms of the will cut hla two brothers and one sister off with a dollar each. leaving the whole estate, worth sev eral thousand dollars, to Mrs. Mary Curran, formerly Miss Mary Don- nette. Fifty years ago, In one of the east ern states, Hermlngile Bernler and Frank Curran were rivals for the hand of Mary Donnette. Curran won the heart of the girl and Bernler vowed he would never marry. For ears, during the best part of his life, he served In the regular army, saving, his comrades say, every cent he could possibly hoard. When he retired he came to Walla Walla, where his for mer sweetheart and her husband liv ed. Curran died some time ago, but Bernler never went near his widow., It is said that he was often seen In the neighborhood at night, as if guarding the home which sheltered his former love. For the past few weeks the old man has been growing weaker and last Friday he died of heart disease. alone and unattended. When his will was read, it was found that he had left everything to the object of his youthful love, with the request that she be given no more trouble In law than was necessary. . Respecting the love of their broth er, the relatives cut off by the will have expressed their Intentions not contest the matter, but to let the property follow the old man's wishes and go to his rival's widow. After a quarter of a century of wedded life, Julius Bragg of Baker City, Is suing his wife for divorce on the grounds of desertion. He alleges his better half left him four years Col. and Mrs. H.' G. Kunkel, formerly of this city but now of Spokane, who Is In the city on a business trip, had a narrow escape from serious accident at the railroad crossing east of the city this morning. Just as he started to cross the track a freight train came along and whistled as It passed him, scar ing the team and causing It to lurch to one side, capsizing the buggy, breaking out the pole and smashing one wheel and otherwise Injuring It. Mr. Kunkel was dragged by the team for some distance, but finally suc ceeded In stopping them and came on to the city without further trouble. Strain Has Appendicitis. Assessor C. P. Strain Is 111 at his home with appendicitis. He was tak en suddenly with tho disease and for time his condition was thought to be such that an operation would be Imperative. However, he is reported be improved this morning and as result he will be able to do without i operation. Tuesday night George Torney made sensational escape from the city Jail t Train, B. C. He locked the po liceman left to guard him In the kitchen and escaped through the of fice. On the way he stopped a young oman who was on horseback, com pelled her to dismount, and rodo way. Walla Walla has a rich and eccen tric Italian gardner who pays a five dollar fine every time he comes to town In preference to hitching his horse. He seems to glory In breaking the city ordinance, which prohibits leaving horses unhitched. Dr. J. W. Evans, fourth assistant physician at the state saylum for the Insane, has been stricken with diph theria. His case Is one of the re sults of the recent epidemic which broke out among the children In the Idiotic ward. . Irrigation Talk No. 6. Scientific Irrigation.
