If the people of the city will co-operate Just a little hit w ith the management this one will surpass all others but there must be nn aroused Interest In It. This Is Pendleton's work. A GOOD TOWN. OF COURSE. We hear the expression that Pen dleton is a good town anyway, so what Is the use of booster meetings, adver tising funds, industrial awakening and .other life-giving activities. Even a good town would die If Tothing were done to keep It alive. 'The finest apple tree in an orchard will quit bearing good apples If not nur tured, Irrigated, pruned and cultivat ed constantly year by year. It requires constant effort to main tain a good town, no matter how ex- cellent the natural resources and sur roundings. It requires constant at- . tention to a business to keep It thrlv lng. If it is allowed to drift it will ; soon become non-productive and will deteriorate. The same Is true of towns and cities. It requires constant communl ty Interest, co-ope'ratlon, activity to keep the rich, warm life blood flow ing through Its veins without Inter ruption. Society requires the upbuilding pro teases of the churches, schools, edu cational forces, religious associations and other like organizations to keep the standard high. The natural ten dency of community life to drift Into a rut If the activities of united or ganizations cease. So It Is necessary in maintaining a good town to keep certain forces In activity at all times. If these forces stop, the town stagnates. We must keep shoulders under the load day by day and night by night. Boosting is simply keeping up the supply of fresh life blood In the veins of the commu nity. Pendleton Is a good town, of course. She is a big, strong, stalwart, health ful, well developed woman, so to speak. But she must have nourish ment, food, drink, life forces to keep her alive. We must not shut off the supply of these forces If we expect her to continue as she is now, a strong, beautiful, vigorous character. HELP THE ENTERTAINMENT. Suppose for argument that Hob son's plan of maintaining the biggest navy on earth, for the purpose of prrscrvlng peace, should be followed. Would there ever he a "blggi'st navy?" Would not every new ship added by the I'nlted States be a chal lenge to England? Would she not respond by building another and a Llgger? It would be an Infinite pro gram of battleship building, an end ltss rivalry to maintain the "biggest navy." Let us apply the plan to individu als. Suppose a neighborhood, which Is but a counterpart of the world, should undertake to maintain peace by each being strongest physically. Suppose as long as one man In the neighborhood exceeded the others In physical strength, the others should spend their time, money, energy and vitality In taking physical culture to enable them to match this superior rival. Suppose they spent their nights and days In developing their muscles, ex erting their lung power to be able to "outwlnd" their big neighbor and In ether physical development, to the reelect of their business. How long would It be until this neighborhood would become a train ing ground for athletes, neglecting Its business, allowing its Industries to de teriorate, Its strength sapped In this useless waste of time, energy and re sources? Would-be statesmen are not wiser than the common people nor are they more patriotic. The people want ad equate defense, but they do not want to convert the nation Into a navy yard with the glamor of war as the constant Ideal of citizenship. cm: XI WOMEN WHO BELIEVE IN PERUNA Honest Women Who Are Not Afraid to Tell the Truth About Pe-ru-na, The Value of Health. It is a shame to have it known that Pendleton woolen mill Is standing Idle. It Is a discredit to the city of Pen dleton and especially to the capitalists of Pendleton to advertise this fact broadcast. Any two or three of the large property owners of this city could furnish funds on an hour's notice to start this industry and pilng 50 em ployes to the city. There are half a dozen experienced men waiting to take hold of the proposition when funds can be secured and the knock ers can be overcome. Let us get together next Monday night in the booster meeting and see If something can be done to help Pendleton. Let us start the woolen mill and plan for other Industries here. It is the height of folly to sit still and allow our industries to close and be abandoned one by one. What will come of the town? How will property owners.be able to se cure an income from their property if they do nothing to keep men and Industries here. It Is up to the property owners, the men who will suffer if Pendleton goes backward, to do something to help themselves. - The renters and tenants have been bearing the bur den long enough. That the unorganized common people are stronger than any organ ized and active political machine which may be maintained, Is shown In the result of the primary election In Marlon county. In that county the machine was strongly organized against the popu lar election of United States senators and had dtermined to overthrow the will of the people. But the people nominated candidates on this princi ple and while they were not brilliant debaters nor experienced politicians, yet they succeeded In electing a large part of their candidates pledged to the popular election of United States senators. It shows what the people can do If they will get together and demand their rights. The Oregon Dally Jour nal says of the Marlon county victory: The victory, or more than half Ictory, for the statement No. 1 prin ciple In Marlon county Is especially gratifying, and much credit therefor s due to a few earnest and vigorous republicans who led the opposition to the machine there, chief among whom was Colonel E.
