Distin guished educators, university presi dents, state superintendent, states men, editors, bishops, clergymen and club women, the leading intellectual lights of the New South, together with a considerable sprinkling or famous victors from other sections of the country, are the guests of Memphis today and will attend the eleventh meeting of the Conference of Educa tion in the South. The opening session this evening will be addressed by Governor M. R. Patterson, who will welcome the vlsi ltors to Tennessee. Robert C. Ogden, the venerable New York phllanthrop- lot who s the present president of the conference, will also speak. The sessions will last through tomorrow and Friday and will be addressed by the Hon. James Bryce, British am bassador to the United States, and Hcores of other prominent men who have Interested themselves in the de velopment of the schools and educa tional institutions in Dixie. The Association of State Superin tendents of Education in the South will hold its convention In connection with the conference, as usual, and nearly all the members from Virgin- la to Texas are here. State meetings will be held by delegates from the va rious southern states tomorrow. Headquarters for the conference have been established by the Memphis Business Men's club, where all the delegates were given a hearty wel come. The object of the conference is to educate and uplift the "poor whites" of the south and In this effort It has already been highly successful. In regard to the work of the body, Sec retary Edgar Gardner Murphy says: "The illiterate mass of our white population are a pure and vigorous stock. They are not the decadent, but the unstarted. Their promise is Illimitable. To tell of their needs was no pleasant . enterprise. Even now an occasional reactionary spirit Is heard to declare that because he loves and esteems them, and because they are better than many of the Il literate population of other sections, me movement that reveals their Ig norance and InRlsts upon their edu cation Is to be resisted. Interest In the Brlarcllff trophy race for stock cars, which will be run tomorrow In Westchester county, is now at fever heat and it is certain that the con test will be the greatest road event in the last two years, or since the running tf the last contest for the Vanderbilt cup.
