C. Mcrrltt Coming for Met IngH Xc-xt Sunday. A rare treat is in store for the Sunday school workers, church peo ple and men of Pendleton, generally, on next Sunday, when the field worker, Rev. W. C. Murrltt,. will be heard In several of the churches of the city. Rev. Merritt, who has his headquarters in Tacoma, conies here in the Interest of all the Sunday schools, to conduct an Institute along these lines next Sunday. He is at present conducting such Institutes in Welser and Caldwell, and Is coining westward. Rev. Merritt will give an address before the men's club of the Presby terian church, In the forenoon at the usual time of morning service, 11 o'clock, on the subject. "The Imperial Law." Rev. Van Xuys, the pastor of the church, will be absent at the meet ing of the Presbyteries, and the entire meeting will be in charge of the men's club. Superintendent Flunk IC. Fire damaged tho upper story of the residence of C. F. Colesworthy on High street last night, but was ex tinguished bv Mr. Colesworthy In a few moments after It was discovered. The cause of the fire Is not known and as It broke out in the middle of the night when tho family was asleep, it was a narrow escape from a seri ous loss. A mob. at Sklddoo, a Nevada min- ing camp, lynched Joe. Simp- son last night. He Is a gam- bier who shot and killed James Arnold, a butcher, Sunday. Simpson was being held a prisoner In a vacant buldlng. guarded by a deputy sheriff and guard. The mob swooped down early last night, secured the prisoner and within 10 minutes the prisoner's body was hang- Ing to a telephone pole. Simpson was a hard charac- ter. Development work has been start ed on the cement mines near Cliffs, says an Item from the north bank. A fcrce of men with powder, picks and shovels teams and other equipment Is on the ground. Three large holes will be dug and numerous ditches plowed and other excavations made to reach the cement formation. At this time the developments Indicate that the cement deposits cover a large area, and that it Is In the form of a tlanket ledge about eight feet thick, and from outeroppings at the surface to 12 feet under the soil. Dynamite has to be used in removing the ce ment that lies near the surface, but where it Is deep under the soil It is easily removed with pick nnd shovel. It was reported that the company having the option on the lands under which the principal deposits are found Is from Seattle, but this is not con firmed by the workmen now on .the ground, as they claim it is Portland capital, but refuse to say who the principals are. . Since it has become known that the peculiar formation has been carefully analyzed nnd thor oughly tested, great hopes are enter tained that the discovery will prove a valuable addition to the resources In and around Cliffs. Some of the old settlers of the Columbia river valley have known of this cement formation for more than 20 years, but did not understand its value, although they remember that some of It was dug out, treated, then hauled to Goldendale, a distance of about 25 miles, and there used In the first large brick building erected In that town, which Is still standing in perfect condition. XO Sl'XDAY THEATERS. The Pastime will have a change of motion pictures tomorrow, new, at tractive and up to date. Something that has never been seen here1 before. The program which has been on the past few days has been attracting the usual large crowds. Tomorrow's change will continue until Sunday, Itocntcllo Manager Anvstl for Vio lating Sunday Law, Hoping that the Sunday closing law of the state, so far as Pocatello is concerned, might be merely a sort of ornament on the statute books, the managers of the New Orpheum the- tter, in the Fair store building, open- d the playhouse last Sunday night md sold tickets, says the Pocatello Tribune. Before the first perform ance was half way completed, the manager was arrested. The matter is in the hands of tho acting attorney md It is not impossible that some sort of a formal compaint will be made against the theater man before many days. The attention of the police last Sunday evening was directed to the fact that people were buying tickets at the window of the theater and en tering the green portals. An investi gation revealed the tact that a per formance was being given. The ar rest of the manager followed. President Camplxil Here. President P. L. Campbell of the state university, Is now In the city. He arrived today on train Xo. 1 from La Grande. While playing on a pllo of log wood, Mary Waldher, aged 8, was killed Saturday by a log rolling on her head, crushing the skull.
