Sill CYCLONE PICKS IIP A HOUSE
Ed De Young, his wife and two chil
dren, experienced an unpleasant sur
prise while sitting in their home In
Naches City, Wash., Thursday after
noon, states an exchange. Something
struck the house, lifted it a few feet
in the air. carried it along and set It
down with a bump In the middle of
the roadway. The occupants of the
sitting room looked at each other
with pale faces and then went outside
through the doorway, the door hav
ing beed wrenched off its hinges, to
M-e what had happened.-
The house had been struck by a sort
of miniature cyclone which could still
be seen moving off towards the hills,
a whirling dust spout, which was fi
nally lost to view in the hills.
The odd happening was witnessed
by about half of the residents of the
village. No other building was
touched and no other damage done.
The air spout came along through the
Nile gap to the west of -Xaches City,
hit the De Young residence and then
passed by. .
The inmates were startled and
frightened but none of them hurt.
The damage to the cottage will
amount to several hundred dollars.
KNIGHTS DEDICATE CASTLE.

Baker City, April 23. The dedica
tion of the new castle of the Knights
of Pythias, Gauntlet lodge No. 8, took
place in this city Tuesday. The
dedication service was conducted by
John M. Wall, trand chancellor, as
sisted by M. F. Davis of Union, past
grand chancellor; L. R. Stinson, of
Salem, grand keeper of records ana
sf-al: Colonel George W. Knight, of
Eupene. captain of the uniform rank,
and Supreme Representatives W. M.
CaVp, of Portland, and W. L. Brad
shaw! of The Dnlles. Before the cere
monies the knights formed in a grand
parade, headed by the Baker City cor
net band. The stores of the city were
beautifully decorated In honor of the
vf"t. 'in.l all business houses were
cloeei during the ceremonies.
A large number of knights from
nearby towns are In attendance. The
now rastle U one of the finest In the
state and is beautifully decorated In
lodge colors, red, blue and yellow.
The hall is finely finished inside mid
the local knights are proud f their
new home, which is the result of years
of striving and working. The present
officers of Gauntlet lodge are: W. P.
Levens, chancellor commander; D. A.
Miles, prelate; W. E. Meacham, mas-
' ter of work; Charles F. Hyde, keeper
of records and seal; John H. Frash.

London this summer, says the Tele
gram. The Multnomah club financed

California for the tryouts, but . the

Atlantic and back will be raised by

Yale President In 52.
New Haven, Conn, April 23. Dr.
Arthur Twining Hadley, president of
Yale university, Is today receiving
the congratulations of his hundreds
of friends on the occasion of his fifty-second
birthday. Dr. Hadley was
born in this city on April 23, 1856,
the son of Professor James H. Had
ley. of Yale, and has been president
of his alma mater since June 29,
1899.
E. L. Boardman of Prosser, has
bought the Republican, a semi-weekly
paper, from George L. Towns. The
Republican was started about two and
a half years ago. Mr. Boardman
published the Prosser Bulletin, but
sold out several months ago.

Wednesday afternoon John A. Stev
ens, 19 years old, was nabbed by the
police for attempting to pass a bogus
55 state bank bill at the Roval ba

streets. Tho fraudulent paper was
declined by the woman cashier, says
a Portland report, and the proprietor
of the bakery held Stevens until the
arrival of Dettctlve Captain Boaty.

ment on foot by eastern buyers to

Local sheepmen state that they
have received reports from various
other sheep camps In the northwest,
which are to the effect that the same

While a few sheep owners have
consigned their wool this year this
does not Indicate that they will not
receive a ftod price. On the con
trary, many who have done this ex
pect to obtain fairly high prices on
eastern markets nnd their wool will
le shipped there and held by eastern
buyers .until the price that the owner
wants Is offered.
As n large number of the sheep
owner are Independently rich, they
can afford to wait until their wool
brings the price they are nfter. Oth-hi-m
who consigned their clip, expect
to come nut with a very reasonable
profit. ,
While the sheepmen of Idaho In
tend to receive the best possible price
that they enn from eastern buyers
they will endeavor to have them
come Into the northwest territory and
bid for the clip. In Vtah the sheep
men Intend to hold the entire wool
clip this year until the price they want
Is received. In other words they pre
fer to combine against the eastern
buyers, who they have reason to be
lieve, have formed n combination on
prices and Intend to attempt to buy
the wool clip on these prices, which
are nut thought to be reasonable.

Agricultural Product of the Dry
State Increase.
The Cheyenne Tribune says of the
increasing productiveness of Wyo
ming: In a pahpmlet isued by the passen
ger department of the I'nlon Pacific
Railway otnpany for the year 1907,
and compiled from government data
for Wyoming will be of interest at
this time.
In a table under "Corn," a crop
about which little is said generally in
Wyoming, It is found that the slate
had 3000 acres planted that year to
corn, when yielded 23 bushels to the
acre, the production totaling 75,000
bushels. This was sold nt un aver
age of 70 cents per bushel, bringing
a return of more than $32,000.
In spring wheat the acreage was
30,000 acres, the yield being 28.5
bushels to the acre, a total produc
tion of 855.000 bushels. Tills brought
77 cents a bushel, the value being
$638,000.
Oats covered an area of GO, 000
acres In 1907, producing 37 bushels
to the acre, producing 2,220,000 bush
els. This was sold for 53 cents a
bufhel, a total of $6000.
In Irish potatoes the state ranked
ahead of Nevada and New Mexico.
there being produced an average of
200 bushels to the acre, the price per
bushel being 74 cents and the return
$740,000.
The total production of native hay
was 525.000 tons, which brought o
total return of $3,938,000.
