friends yesterday. The old engineer
is now running on the Pilot Rock
branch. Although he ran the first
engine into the Grande Ronde valley,
ho Is still nblo to sit at the throttle.

Greet Tom Rlcliardson Postponed
on Account of E. II. Clarke's
Death.
Owing to the death of E, H. Clarke
the prominent Elk and well known
woolbuyer of this city, there will be
no meeting of Pendleton Commercial
association tonight as had been
planned by President Alexander to
greet Tom Richardson, secretary of
Portland Commercial club, who will
be In the city this evening on a tour
of eastern Oregon counties.
A meeting will perhaps be hold at
a later date to greet Mr. Richardson
on his return trip from eastern Oregon.
Eugle Show Shop.
The Eagle show shop had an at
tractive change of program In the
moving pictures yesterday, which will
continue over until tomorrow. Among
the new pictures are "Shamus
O'Brien." This Is in beautiful color
ings, and tells a pretty Irish story.
"My Watch, Is Slow." "Toula's
Dream," "Bill's on Fire," and the IN
ulstrated song, "Coming Through the
Rye My Jennie Mine." This Is one
of the best programs "yet seen here,
and will continue over until Thurs
day, when there ' will be another
change.
Pastime Cliange.
There was a change of moving pic
tures at the Pastime this afternoon)
among the new attractions being "The
Poachers' Daughter," "Weary Willies
Luck." "The Snow Man" and the Il
lustrated song, "Good Bye Little Girl,
Good Bye." This Is an excellent
change, and will draw the usual large
crowds. There will be another change
Friday.

the Dime, one of the best yet seen at

Local Option in Peoria.
Peoria. 111., April 21. A local op
tion election Is being held today to
enable the voters to decide between
prohibition or saloons. Peoria is one
of the country's leading centers of
the distilling Industry and It Is high
ly unlikely that the "drys" will be
successful. Local option elections are
also in progress today in Qulncy,
Streator, Ottawa, East St. Louis, La
Salle and Galena. The voters In
these tflwns have been wrought to a
high pitch of excitement by the con
flict between the "wets" and the
"drys" and an unusally large vote ha
been cast. The success of the Antl
Saloon league In the local option
elections held In many Illinois cities
and towns on April 7 has caused the
workers to redouble their efforts, and
it Is likely that they will win a vic
tory In several towns where the Issue
is being fought out today.

power, one of the old houses was
moved today from behind the LaDow
building to a new location In the west
end of the city. The lot back of the
LiDow building was recently purchas
ed by Walter McCormmach and a
brick garage is to be erected upon the
ground.
Federal Court Has Jurisdiction
Trial of Interstate Rate Cases.
Washington. April 21. The su
preme court took another slap at the
theory of state regulation of the rail
roads yesterday' when It refused to
require the federal court of Nebras
ka to send back to the Nebraska state
court a suit instituted by the state to
enforce its own Intrastate rate regu
lations. The road had promptly taken an
appeal from the state court to the
federal courts, alleging lack of juris
diction, and this opinion was upheld
by the supreme court.
Xeiv Veterinarian Arrives.
Dr. J. A. Donahue, a veterinary
surgeon, lias arrived in the cltv and
will open an office here. He is a
graduate of the Ontario Veterinary
college and also of the University of
Toronto.

association began a two-day session
at the Southern hotel today. Ad
dreses will be made by President Ed

shoers' association.
Montana Cattlemen.
Miles City. Mont., April 21. Mon
tana cattlemen were present in large
numbers when the convention of the
Montana Stock Growers' association
was called to order this morning. The
initial session was devoted largely to
a consideration or me relations Be
tween cattle shippers and railroad
men addressing the iconventlon. The
Montana association is the most Im
portant state organization of stock
growers In the country and its mem
bership rolls represent millions of
dollars invested in the cattle Industry.
