theater-goers of Pendleton that he
has secured Mrs. Patrick Campbell for
one performance on Monday evening,
April 20.
Owing to the excellent train serv
ice between Walla Walla and Pendle
ton It Is believed that many Pendle
ton people will take his opportunity
to see Mrs. Campbell's performance
at the Garden City.
Mrs Patrick Campbell's present
tour of America Is one of the most re
markable ever planned by the enter
prising management of Llebler & Co.
It Is to cover a wide extent of terri
tory, with extremely limited stops,
even in the great cities where Mrs.
Campbell'? previous visits have been
the sensat'ns of the season.
After a brilliant opening week in
New York, on November 11, Mrs.
Campbell and her complete company
from Lonfinn In a train of specially
fitted private cars, began a Journey
which is to carry them across the
continent, north and south, Into Can
ada, and as far south as the borders
of Mexico.
In Boston, for instance, where the
English actress Is relatively as great
a favorite as she is in London, Mrs.
Campbell was booked for three per
formances only. These were given in
Symphony hall and took the character
of a dramatic festival dedicated to
Ibsen. Sudermann and the Incompara
ble woman who has made these auth
ors' realities upon the English stage.
The opening of Symphony hall in
Boston to d'amatlc art, was In iself
an event of great local Interest. The
new hall was dedicated ot the higher
forms of music, and it was especially
agreed that nothing but highest ex
amples of the other arts should be al
lowed within its gates. No other stage
performance was ever given In the
hall.
It was therefore with considerable
surprise to local theater-goers that
Mrs. Campbell was to give a perform
ance In Walla Walla.
Mrs. Campbell is devoting herself
exclusively to the four latest successes
of her stage career, "The Second Mrs.
Tanqueray," 'The Notorious Mrs.
Ebbsmlth," 'Magda," "Hedda Gadler."
Of these Ibsen's plays "Hedda Gabler"
Is the only one which Mrs. Campbell
has not been seen in in this country.
Her sifccess In the role In London
has been of the very highest kind and
there is great Interest In this country
to see her characterization of the most
complex and perverse of Ibsen's her
rolnes. It will be remembered that although
Mrs. Campbell has only been Identi
fied with the Pinero plays in America
during the last few years, she is the

neighboring cities.
MANY CONVICTS PARDONED.
Forty-Seven Prisoners Recommended
for Leniency at Walla Walla.
Forty-seven inmates of the state
penitentiary here have been recom
mended for leniency by the board of
pardons, which completed its session '
here this morning, says the Walla
Walla Bulletin.
The board has been In session since
Saturday morning, and In that time
has acted on over 100 petitions for
leniency.
Of the 47 prisoners who are rec
ommended to Governor Mead for I
leniency, 17 are for final release, 1
three for conditional release, four for,
final discharge from parole and 23 '
for parole.
Among those recommended for fi
nal release is Lewis Eddy of Asotin
county, who was convicted of horse
stealing and sentenced to serve two
years in the penitentiary. Eddy, it
will be remembered, is the man who
came to Walla Walla of his own ac
cord to enter the penitentiary, but
who was not admitted Immediately
on account of the remittitur being
lost in the mails.
Eddy was compelled to wait about
two weeks before he was admitted,
and during that time he lived at a
hotel in Walla Walla at his own ex
pense. When the remittitur was re
ceived Eddy was notified and went
to the penitentiary and commenced
to serve out his sentence. His case
Is one of the strangest that has been
brought up here for a number of
years. Eddy is claimed to be a weal
thy stockman living in Asotin coun
ty. UMATILLA CONVICTS ESCAPE.
Four Men Make Their Getaway from
State Building Near Salem.
Four convicts escaped last night
from the gang employed o nthe feeble
minded institute near this city, says
the Salem Journal. They were Bozo
Dojovich, Philip Lamont, Ed Body
and Casper Clinton, all one year men
for larceny from Union and Umatilla
counties. They are all young men
and when notified of their departure
Warden Curtis of the penitentiary
trailed them with glood hounds to the
Southern Pacific railroad, where they
probably boarded a train and left for
the south. Fifty dollars reward Is of
fered for the arrest of each one of
them. '
No Night Guard.
Inveslgation shows that no night
guard has been employed to watch
the band of 20 convicts working on
the new state institution Just south
of the city. The men have been
sleeping In the old Coleman house un
atended at night, but with two guards
In the daytime.
Provision for the employment of
these convicts was made by the last
legislature in cleaning the grounds
and helping put in the foundations of
the new state buildings under the di
rection of Supt. H. E. Bickers.

RUN SPECIAL FRUIT TRAIN.
Northern Pacific Preparing an Itln
crary for Inland Empire.
The Northern Pacific company will
operate a special fruit train over its
entire system in the inland empire,
which will be stopped at all stations,
where lectures on the scientific culti
vation of fruit will be delivered by n
structors of the horticultural depart
ment of the Washington State college
of Pullman, says the Lowlston Teller.
The train will come to Lewlston
and will make trips from here ov.
the Clearwater and Vollmer branches.
The dates have not yet been determ
ined, but it is expected definite an
nouncements will be maiie within a
tew days.
The operation of the special fruit
trains has been found to be very bene
ficial to the horticultural Interests and
brings many inquiries to the state col
lege that result in stuttering valuable
Information In all sections of the fruit
belt.
During the past month the Wash
ington State college at Pullman has
provided Instructors for a fruit train
and a farmers' lecture train which
toured all of the branches oi the
Harrlman system. The trains were
met by large numbers of Interested
fnrmers wherever stops were schedul
ed, and the correspondence received
at the college as a result of the trips
has demonstrated he benefits to be
derived from this manner of Instruc
ting the growers.
General Agent H. N. Kennedy of
the Northern Pacific, "who accompan
ied Superintendent Bcamer on his trip
of Inspection over the Vollmer line,
stated the company had been working
on this plan for some time, and it Is
probable the running schedule of the
train will be announced within a few
days.

After next fall's fair, under the aus
pices of the Inter-Mountain Fair as
sociation, it is very probable that
steps will be taken by promlnont
horsemen of this state to promote the
organisation of an lnter-mountaln
race association, thus making a divis
ion In the Pacific coast circuit, which
controls all of the northwestern states,
says the Boise Capital News.
The reason, for forming a separate
circuit la to enable the cities holding
fairs in the lnter-mountaln country,
including eastern Oregon, eastern
Washington. Idaho and Utah to se
cirre better races and on the dates
which best suit them.
As it is now, under the coast circuit
the various fair associations fin dthat
they have to set their fair dates to
accommodate the horsemen on the
coast circuit, which makes it very in
convenient for them, as many of the
fairs have to be postponed until late
in the season.
With an lnter-mountaln circuit
formed the horsemen will have more
time to transfer their horses from one
city to the other, where the fairs are
held and as a result the animals will
be In far better condition for racing,
thus making It possible to establish
higher records htan heretofore.
There are a large number of fast
horses In the northwestern states
which are entered In the coast circuit
and race from California to the Puget
sound country and then are taken Into
eastern Washington and Oregon, Idaho
and Utah.
By the time they are ready for the
races in this state the season Is well
advanced and a little late. The new
circuit will make It possible for horse
men to keep their animals more In
their own territory and prevent so
much travel, which Is found to be
very hard on them.

of Idaho at one time are sufficient and
it does not seem to me that there Is
hardly any room here for an Inde
pendence league," said S. E. Annas,
assistant secretary of the La Follctte
club, when asked by a representative
of the Boise Capital News If the move
ment towards an organization of an
Independent league In Boise nnd Idaho
which Is now In progress, would com
plicate the situation.
"While I know that Hearst repre
sentatives are in Boise for that pur
pose," continued Mr. Annas, "I do not
think that they will meet with encour
agement, as there Is little sentiment
here favoring a league of this kind."
The executive committee of the La
Follette club will meet next Wednes
day evening for the purpose of select
ing working delegates for the 16 vot
ing precincts In that city. It Is the
purpose of the club to organize each
separate precinct and thus have them
act as a unit with the general or
ganization. Delegntes are to he sent
Into the precincts to work for the
Wisconsin senator's Interests nnd will
tie furnished with literature and hut
tons of Ln Follette. It Is also expect
ed to hold a general club meeting
some time next week for which spe
cial speakers will be provided.
