SSw -iJ BLAST IKE UP IMMEHSL KM One of the biggest blast that have been exploded In the conduction work on the St. Paul road in the can yon was aet ott In the rocky bluff just above the Prescott ranch, says the Missoula (Mont.) Mlssouiian. In this bloat the new Japanese explosive, llento, waa uaed aa an experiment, and It la aald that la worked satis factorily. The explosion waa almost noiseless, and when the electric contact waa made that discharged the rock-rend-Insj substance, there waa an enormous quantity of the bluff broken off. Opened a Great Cavern. But the Interest that waa felt in the operation of the llento was forgotten aa soon as the powder gang made Its Investigation bf the result of the blast. Hundreds of tons of rock were dis placed, and, aa the men investigated the great fissure that was formed, they shouted In amaaement, for the blast had opened a cavern that loom ed dark in the rock wall before them. It was so dark that they could not well see the extent of the hole, but they sent to their camp for lanterns and proceeded with their exploration The opening to the cavern was not large, but a man could enter easily enough. Three men went In with lan terns and they found themselves standing In a chamber whose roof sparkled in the light of their lanterns aa If it were studded with jewels. From the celling were suspended huge stalactites without number; all were encrusted with crystals that gave back and multiplied the rays of the lanterns to an extent that was bewild ering. It presented the phenomenon that is familiar to all who have been In large caves. Subterranean Stream. There was a small stream found, which seemed to have a subterranean outlet Into the river. In places this stream widened Into pools and In these were found some fish, not unlike trout, except that they were blind. A couple of them were captured and were taken in a can to the Shapard hotel, where they were placed on ex hibition in a glass jar. But it was not in the living animals found that the greatest Interest cen tered. Further exploration of the cav ern led to the discovery of a second chamber, a little west of south of the first one and connected with it. In this cavern were found the fossil re mains of two gigantic creatures. These are evidently, according to the engln eers who saw them, the remains of creatures of the saurian type All Denied Approach. On account of the lateness of the hour and of the fact that there might be danger in the loosened rock about the entrance, the contractors com manded their men to keep the matter a secret; but through the queer fish that were brought over, the secret be came generally known during the night. Those who went across the river to see the remarkable result of the blast were, however, denied approach to the place. A guard had been placed over it and no one will be allowed to enter the cavern until it is known to be safe. The discovery is a great thing for Missoula If the cave Is anything like what it Is represented to be. Scientific Investigation will be awaited with great interest. Professor Elrod said he had not been Informed as to the extent or the details of the discovery, but that he hoped to be able to see It for himself. Promise has been made that a few persons at a time will be admitted In the meantime the blind fish at the Shapard hotel are the center of oh Nervation; they are the queerest things ever seen ere. - SAFiKM LICENSES ARE toOO. Liquor Llccraiea In Capital City Are Reduced. The Salem city council this evening sustained Mayor Rodger's veto of the ordinance reducing the llkuor license from $1000 to $700 and passed an or ordlnance reducing the liquor license talnlng numerous regulations and re ducing the liquor license to $800, says a Salem dispatch.. In his veto mes sage Mayor Rodgers insisted that regulation rather than revenue ahould be the purpose of liquor ordinances. The ordinance was passed by a vote of 13 to 1, Alderman Presnall. who Is opposed to license under any condi tions, voting "No." The only question raised when the ordinance was placed on final pas safe was concerning a section which makes a minor liable o the full pen alties of the ordinance if he frequents a place where liquors are sold. Al derman Moores called attention to me taft that this would Drotcct the 11- quorseller and that Mayor Lane of Portland, veteed an ordinance nav ina a similar effect. He wanted this feature Incorporated In a separate or dinance but voted ror tne Din.. This ordinance, which has attract ed wide attention In the city, pro vides for a limitation of the number of saloons to one for every 1000 In habitants. It requires that there must be an open glass front 10 feet wide and having the lower edge of the glass not more than five feet from the sidewalk. Boxes with open doors connecting with a hallway are allowed in res taurants, but all boxes, private rooms and annxes are prohibited In saloons. It Is made unlawful to permit lewd women In a saloon. Sales of liquor on Sunday, o minors or to Intoxicat ed persons may be punished by for feiture of the license. The schedule of liquor license fees Is as follows: Saloons. $(00; beer halls, $400; clubs. $300; resaurants, $300; drug stores, .$$00; wholesalers, $100. The penaly for violation of the or dinance Is a fine of $10 o $100 or im prisonment 6 to 20 days. Supporters of the anti-saloon movement severely criticised that section making minors liable to fine or Improvement aa they say it will be Impossible to convict a saloonkeeper for selling to a minor. HURRYING BASEBALL PARK. EntiniHtaatlo fans of La Grande Anx ious to Play Ball. About half the posts to which will be affixed the fence about the La Qrande athletic park, have been set and before tomorrow night will all be in place, says the La Qrande Obserc er. While the crew Is setting the posts others are at work bringing the lum ber to the scene, that everything can be In readiness for the raising bee next Sunday. A grader and roller will be put to work tomorrow, and If theturn-out of loyal fans Is big enough on Sunday, the fence and a large part of the grandstand will be complete by Sunday night. The reason for the haste In the matter Is that it Is already time to commence training and one week from Sunday is the first game In this city. This contest is to be of a try out nature. Union will likely be brought over and Is to be strengthened by loans from the local squad of candidates. "E. C.
